CVPA participated in the Middle States Accreditation and Magnet School Evaluation visits to Suitland High School & received great reviews! Check out what each CVPA Department is up to this month!

3 The CVPA Dance Concert is December 16th at 7:30PM in the Annabelle Ferguson Auditorium. $10.00 general admission, $5.00 admission for children. Matinees will take place December 15 & 16 at 10:30AM in the Annabelle Ferguson Auditorium. $5.00 admission. This Month in Dance

4 CVPA All-State Dance recipients for the School Year are: Yvonna Hoba and Kiya Snow. They will be awarded the All-State Medal of Recognition at the 2017 Maryland Public High School Showcase and will be performing with the All-State Ensemble. This will all take place on Friday, January the 6th at Goucher University. Well Done Ladies!! Congratulations on this important honor! This Month in Dance

5 The CVPA Band: Symphonic Band and Jazz Band Concert is December 21, 2016 at 7PM in the Suitland High School Annabelle Ferguson Auditorium. General admission for Adults is $10.00 and Children $5.00. The Jazz portion of the concert will feature the internationally recognized recording artist and saxophonist, Elijah Balbed. This Month in Music

6 Our CVPA Brass Ensemble will perform for the intermission of the Ft. Washington Symphonic Winds Concert on December 10th at 5PM in the Oxon Hill High School Auditorium. Music Orchestra: Strings Orchestra Concert is December 19, 2016 at 7PM. General admission for Adults is $10.00 and Children $5.00. The BU Tanglewood Institute has formally designated a BUTI Half Scholarship for a CVPA student who is admitted to BUTI for their summer program! This Month in Music

7 Bravo Tutti to our CVPA musicians who went to Benjamin Foulois School to demonstrate the rigor and rewards of the CVPA Music program! The CVPA Band and Choir will provide a Holiday Hour of music and song at Starbucks (3450 Donnell Drive, Forrestville, MD) from 6-7pm on December 19th. Come enjoy the music and some warm refreshments! Piano majors and their parents attended Master Classes at the University of Maryland in an exciting scholarly exchange that polished skills for our Piano Majors! This Month in Music

8 Strings students attended a workshop with the Attacca Quartet along with Dance Theater of Harlem in late November and received complimentary tickets to the Attacca concert. The Attacca Quartet came to Suitland CVPA on December 5, 2016 (12:00 Noon to 2:00PM) for an extensive Master class for the CVPA Strings Majors. 9 Ashley Powell (senior), Desca Samuel (freshman) and Shiana Spencer (freshman) attended an exciting and educational Piano Studio session of world renowned pianist Professor Larissa Dedova at the University of Maryland School of Music on November 30th. 10 Samania Cumle and Preston Jones participated in a performance with the Maryland Lyric Opera in Amahl and the Night Visitors on December 2 at 7:30PM. The performance was held at the Fall Church Episcopal Church in Falls Church, Virginia. Music Voice/Piano: Opera Scenes & Piano Concert is January 9, 2017 at 7PM in the Suitland High School Annabelle Ferguson Auditorium. General Admission for Adults is $10.00 and Children is $5.00. 11 The CVPA Theater Department is working hard on their Production of Raisin in the Sun which will be presented on December 8 & 9 at 7PM in the Annabelle Ferguson Auditorium. Matinees will be on December 8th during 2nd a 3rd period block for our Honor Roll Students.

12 The CVPA Theatre Department has kicked off a brand new initiative, The CVPA THEATRE SEMINAR SERIES. Each month, professionals come to CVPA to speak on a variety of topics pertaining to careers in the theatrical arts. Actors, directors, stage managers, costume designers, arts administrators to dramaturgs and every job in between expose our students to not only different career paths in the theatre but also to those in professional practices. 13 To date, we have been visited by actors Jamal Douglas (MFA-Univ. of San Diego), Stefanee Martin (MFAAmerican Conservatory Theatre and lead actress on the Netflix series "The Get Down"), and Kashayna Johnson ("Milk Like Sugar" and "How We Got On"). They have conducted workshops and talkback sessions ranging from acting methodology to the step young artists need to take to develop their brand and to stand out in the industry. 14 A recurring theme from all of the sessions is the importance of constant and consistent training in order to stay on top of their craft. Our next Seminar will take place December 16, 2016 and will feature Baakari Wilder ("Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk", "House of Cards", "So You Think You Can Dance"). CVPA Theatre Seminars are mandatory for all CVPA Theatre students and take place during 5th period. A schedule is forthcoming for the dates and guests for the rest of the year. This Month in Theater

15 This past November, CVPA TV Productions celebrated the Annual Media Day event for the Prince Georges County School s Arts Integration Program. Media day was hosted for the second year in a row at the Prince George s Community College. Attending the event were several high schools from the county and representing Suitland this year are students from the TV-1 class. Rikkea Pate, Jordan Tolbert, William Leach, Raheem Adams, Omar Kabar, Miles Hodnett and Keyshawn Whitehead. Teachers: Richard McGhee and Kimberlyn Nyarko. This Month in TV Production

16 CVPA TV Production will have a Production Showcase in the Suitland High School Cafeteria on December 20, 2016 at 6:00PM. This Month in TV Production

17 On November 30th the Magnet Schools Review Committee conducted an audit of all Specialty Programs in Prince George s County Public Schools. CVPA was a part of this process and we received some positive initial feedback. The final report will be submitted in early December and we will be provided with a critique to improve our programming at CVPA as well as the Specialty Programs in PGCPS district wide. 18 CVPA Visual Arts have been busy with portfolio reviews by Art colleges and universities and presentations to recruit our CVPA students. This Month in Visual Arts

19 California Institute of the Arts provided a rich profile for our students in late November followed by the Arts Departments at Stevenson University. Cleveland Institute of Art visited CVPA on November 14th. The College for Creative Studies from Detroit visited CVPA on November 17th. Rhode Island School of Design visited on November 16th. New Hampshire Institute of Art visited CVPA on November 17th. Tyler School of Art visited CVPA on November 18th. This Month in Visual Arts

20 Boston University visited CVPA on November 18th. Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City presented at CVPA on November 21st. Virginia Commonwealth University presented at CVPA on November 21st. Maine College of Art from Portland presented at CVPA on November 22nd. Montserrat College of Art from Beverly, MA presented on November 29th. This Month in Visual Arts

21 Delaware College of Art and Design presented at CVPA on November 30th. Kiara Byrd (3rd from the left) was selected by the National Gallery of Art to represent Suitland High School and the CVPA program as a participant in their High School Seminar 2.0 in which students study and interpret works in their collection. Kiara s chosen theme for the seminar is Balance through Materials and Processes. Her artists are Alexander Calder and Donatello. This Month in Visual Arts

23 CVPA Visual Arts Major Kiara Byrd placed 1st for Most Creative in the Rethink Recycling 2016 Sculpture Contest for the Maryland Department of the Environment. She received a Samsung Galaxy Tab A for her work Pandemonium using a cardboard box and the motor from an old remote control vehicle. This Month in Visual Arts

Deadline is the 3rd Thursday of each month. Make sure to submissions to Dr. Barron on time. You can also add pictures with your text information! A Note from your Principal... Hello all you Wonderful CVPA students!!! Happy December to you all! It s hard to believe that 2016 is almost over. December is a very busy month with many rehearsals and performances. Please keep your studies up during this hectic time and remember that we are here to help you get through all of the challenges that come up. Stay focused and you will be able to accomplish anything you set your mind to! Our average cumulative GPA for this quarter was a 3.45!!! WELL DONE!!!
