2 Page /18 WELCOME TO THE PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA S 2017/18 SEASON AT DE MONTFORT HALL. How to follow our 20th anniversary season as the Resident Orchestra of De Montfort Hall? With the return to Leicester of our Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, Esa-Pekka Salonen, conducting Mahler (10 April 2018); the first performance in Leicester of our new music strand, Music of Today; and performances from some of our finest visiting artists, including violinist Hilary Hahn and pianist Simon Trpčeski. One of the Philharmonia s new Principal Guest Conductors, Jakub Hruša, opens the Season with a work that is close to his heart as a Czech artist, the complete version of Smetana s Má Vlast (7 October 2017). What follows is a succession of great works for orchestra, including the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Piano Concerto No. 1, Bartók s Concerto for Orchestra, and symphonic poems by Liszt and Wagner. 1 2 Our Education programme in Leicester goes from strength to strength. New for this season, we are working with the Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service to celebrate its 70th anniversary, with a special concert on Saturday 3 February See page 10 for full details. Thank you to all our partners in Leicester, whose support makes the Season possible: Leicester City Council, our Principal Partner, De Montfort University, and our partners at the University of Leicester. We look forward to welcoming you. 3 Visit us online and find out more about the orchestra the latest news, where we are on tour and behind the scenes photos, videos, interviews and more. philharmonia.co.uk 1: Kira Doherty Felix Broede 2: Emily Davis Felix Broede 3: Esa-Pekka Salonen Benjamin Suomela
3 Page 5 Saturday 7 October 2017, 7pm (Please note start time) SMETANA: MÁ VLAST THE LORD MAYOR S CONCERT Jakub Hrůša conductor Hilary Hahn violin DVOŘÁK Violin Concerto in A minor SMETANA Má Vlast (complete) 1 Violinist Hilary Hahn has been called America s best classical musician, and tonight she brings all her world-class artistry to a very Czech masterpiece: the lovely Violin Concerto by Antonín Dvorák. The title of Smetana s Má Vlast meanwhile, simply means My Country. But this isn t just a series of colourful postcards from Bohemia. It s an adventure, too a tale of battles, warrior-maidens, and a nation awakening to freedom. 2017/18 AT DE MONTFORT HALL Wednesday 1 November 2017, 7.30pm BRAHMS & TCHAIKOVSKY Karl-Heinz Steffens conductor Esther Yoo violin BEETHOVEN Overture, Egmont TCHAIKOVSKY Violin Concerto BRAHMS Symphony No. 4 The great Romantic composers did everything on a grand scale, and from the jubilant trumpets of Beethoven s Egmont overture to the storm clouds that tower over Brahms s Fourth and final symphony, this concert is filled with emotions at their most uninhibited. So it s the perfect setting for the bewitching young violinist Esther Yoo. This concert is supported by Saturday 2 December 2017, 7.30pm ROMEO & JULIET Krzysztof Urbański conductor Simon Trpčeski piano TCHAIKOVSKY Fantasy Overture, Romeo and Juliet TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Concerto No. 1 PROKOFIEV Romeo and Juliet (excerpts) Two houses, both alike in dignity and two unashamedly melodious takes on Shakespeare s greatest love story. Tchaikovsky s Romeo and Juliet redefined musical romance, and gave us one of the most celebrated love themes in all music. And with his impassioned melodies, bittersweet harmonies and taut, angular rhythms, Sergei Prokofiev brought the star-cross d lovers dancing into the 20th century. In between, superstar pianist Simon Trpčeski brings his phenomenal technique (Daily Telegraph) to Tchaikovsky s First Piano Concerto. 2 Wednesday 7 February 2018, 7.30pm BARTÓK MEETS BEETHOVEN THE DMU CHANCELLOR S CONCERT Juraj Valčuha conductor Evgeni Bozhanov piano KODÁLY Dances of Galánta BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 3 BARTÓK Concerto for Orchestra Bartók s Concerto for Orchestra isn t just a magnificent showpiece for 80 world-class musicians. It s a salute to the human spirit by a composer in exile: filled with bold colours, supercharged dance-tunes and moments of piercing emotional honesty. This is music with a dash of paprika: an intoxicating climax to a concert that begins with the untrammelled joie de vivre of Zoltan Kodály s riotous Hungarian dance suite, and stars the award-winning Evgeni Bozhanov as soloist in Beethoven s darkest piano concerto. 6pm, Music of Today Venue to be announced, FREE entry A recital showcasing the talented violinist Irvine Arditti performing three pieces from Sciarrino s Sei Capricci for solo violin and the UK premiere of Cattaneo s Concerto for Violin and Ensemble. Principal Partner 6pm, pre-concert talk, FREE entry Jakub Hruša in conversation with John Florance 1: Esther Yoo Marco Borggreve 2: Krzysztof Urbański Fred Jonny

Conducted by Carl Davis, Philharmonia at the Movies returns with a concert of some of the most iconic film scores and unforgettable love songs from the greatest romantic films of all time. The themes of love, passion and romance shine through in the instantly recognisable yearning melody to 1970 film Love Story and the soaring notes that set the tone to Margaret Mitchell s sweeping emotional epic Gone with the Wind, heard alongside soundtracks to Dr Zhivago, La La Land and the most tragic love story of all time, Romeo and Juliet. 6.15pm, pre-concert talk, FREE entry Carl Davis in conversation with John Florance ESA-PEKKA SALONEN: MAHLER 1 Esa-Pekka Salonen conductor David Fray piano BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 2 MAHLER Symphony No. 1 A magical spring dawn or the creation of the universe itself? One thing s for sure: the opening of Mahler s First Symphony is the start of a thrilling journey, and from that extraordinary beginning right through to the roof-raising finish, there s no more dynamic guide than the great Esa-Pekka Salonen the Philharmonia s Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor, and one of the finest living Mahler interpreters in the world today. Beethoven s wittiest piano concerto should make a delightful complement. 6.15pm, pre-concert talk Garden Suite, FREE entry An introduction to the evening s programme PASSION & POETRY Christoph Altstaedt conductor Singers to be announced WAGNER Siegfried Idyll MASSENET Cendrillon (arias and excerpts) VERDI La traviata (arias and excerpts) LISZT Les préludes Rising-star conductor Christoph Altstaedt brings a programme of romantic 19thcentury story-telling both operatic and symphonic to the De Montfort Hall stage. The evening opens and closes with two symphonic poems: Liszt s lushly scored Les préludes and Wagner s Siegfried Idyll. The music for the Idyll later used in Wagner s opera Siegfried was composed for Wagner s wife Cosima s birthday, and first performed as a surprise for her on the stairs of their villa in Lucerne. In between, themes of love and heartache in two of the most popular operas of the Romantic era: Massenet s Cinderella and the tragedy of Violetta in Verdi s La traviata. 1: Tony and Maria: Balcony Scene from 1961 film West Side Story Alamy 2: Esa-Pekka Salonen Minna Hatinen 2
