2 Memory Corner After an Alzheimer s Diagnosis: The Emotional Impact By Ava M. Stinnett When a friend or loved one is formally diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease, it s likely that you ve already noticed some symptoms. These may include impaired speech or memory loss that interferes with daily life, such as remembering events that just happened, repeatedly asking for the same information, or forgetting how to drive to a familiar place. Difficulty holding a conversation or struggling to do practical tasks, such as paying bills or doing household chores, might also be noticeable. Although symptoms will vary for each person, it s important to consider not only the cognitive and practical aspects associated with Alzheimer s disease but also the psychological and emotional impact. Experiencing memory loss or being unable to perform daily routines can be quite challenging. For the person with Alzheimer s, this will sometimes lead to low self-esteem, lack of confidence, and feelings of isola- tion as personal relationships change. However, numerous studies have confirmed that even when memories fade, even when a loved one no longer recognizes friends and family members, the disease does not erase the lasting effect of feelings and a sense of being socially connected. Although it may seem like the person with Alzheimer s can't differentiate between you and other caretakers in the later stages, the research underlines the importance of emotionally supporting those living with the disease. The influence of positive caretaking and emotional support goes a long way. [Although he or she] may not remember the most recent visit from loved ones, those feelings will still remain; caring actions can have a lasting impact. (Bushak 2014) According to a research study from the University of Iowa, Providing small joys really does make a difference even if you automatically assume they won't remember these things. The findings should empower caregivers by showing them that their actions toward patients really do matter. Frequent visits and social interactions, exercise, music, dance, jokes, and serving favorite foods are all simple things that can have a lasting emotional impact on quality of life and subjective well being. (Guzmán-Vélez, Feinstein & Tranel, 2014) Some believe that those who have Alzheimer s disease know that pieces of the puzzle are missing. They may not be able to remember who we are, but they feel us just the same. Therefore, if we learn to listen for clues for how they feel instead of what they say, we ll understand them much better. 11 Dear Residents, Families, Friends, and Staff, Spring is here! The warmer weather is just around the corner. I am hoping that all of the April showers we have had will bring us many May flowers. I can't wait to see the residents visiting in the courtyards and soaking up the warm sun. Next time your out in the courtyard go in the back and check out the beautiful residents garden in the two big white planters. They have some beautiful flowers growing and I can t wait to see what comes up in the vegetable garden. We are also planning on doing some gardening in the Memory Care courtyard. Can't wait to see what they plant! This time of year brings thoughts of longer days and warmer Sacramento nights. I can't wait for the warm weather to be here everyday and every night. I know Shantel will be planning some wonderful activities in our beautiful courtyard. At night when I leave, I love to see the residents, families and guests sitting outside by the fountain enjoying the weather and company. I hope you all enjoyed our Easter Brunch, and got a chance to visit with the Easter Bunny. We had over 150 guests and everything went so smooth. I hope to see you all at our annual Mother's Day Brunch. Mark your calendars for our Mother's Day Brunch on Sunday, May 14th, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. It is the brunch of the year. The culinary team has a beautiful Brunch planned with great decorations and even better food. Please make your reservations now. We want to make sure we have room for all of our guest. This is by far our most popular brunch and making reservations for this day will help us have enough food, and table set up for all. We usually have over 200 guests and it really helps us to have you RSVP ahead of time. I hope you all are enjoying our Spring time weather. Make sure you take time out of your busy days to stop and smell the roses. Warm Regards, Lisa Schumann, Executive Director

14 "Which one's you?" They are both gossiping. One of them is saying, "GO TO HELL!" They are looking at each other and are talking to one another There names are 'Angel' and 'Beast' They are saying, "How do we get out of here?" The two cats look so happy. ( The one on the left is saying, "Shut up! I'm going home" ( ) Maybe they are friends. Could be sisters, they look alike. They do and they are neat. These dogs never stick around forever. They are pretty and I see signal lights. They are going home, but they are mixed up about where home is. They really do look alike. New York City is home. George and Margaret are talking about the people outside until the signal lights turn green.

16 By Ruby McDonald Consider the music that was given to the world by people like Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Bach and other greats. How could it have been possible for those composers to sit in rooms lit by candles, using a quill pen, to put together concerts, symphonies, operas, etc., with complex genius that reaches beyond the ability of people to do the same things today with computers and other modern technology? And Beethoven was deaf. Where did it come from and did it come to them for a reason? Why does the music of Mozart have such a deep effect on consciousness that something happens to the human mind when his music is played? (The Mozart effect.) A New Way to Think about Music Larry Dossey, M.D., in his article, The Body as Music says, Why are we moved by music? One reason may be that the body itself is intrinsically musical, right down to the DNA that makes up our genes. There is a deep connection between your DNA and the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky, et al, and the reason why they were able to compose such music in a dark room by candlelight, with a quill pen, is because the music was composed for them. The very essence of existence through the celestial connection of all life was playing magnificent music within them. There was no need for Beethoven to hear with his ears because what came through him on to the paper in the form of music was the coding sequences of life itself. DNA. And when that DNA is given expression to the ear, we were captured by the MOZART EFFECT. The vibrations that harmonize with our DNA through Beethoven s 9th symphony, or the solace and beauty, which ran through our very beings of Tchaikovsky s Pathetique was all planned. Our very existence is a symphony of love. We are created with a harmony of love flowing through our bodies and minds. Even in the Scripture, the text admonishes us to make a joyful noise to the Lord and to praise Him with musical instruments. Can you grasp this wonder? Our very DNA is God s music playing within us and this is why We may not be able to compose music that will touch the core of our being. We may not be able to create sounds to flow in harmony with the music of our DNA. The beauty of all of this is that we do not have to. The harmony is within us, flowing through our DNA. The music to harmonize with that DNA has been provided for us by the composers of long ago. We can use music to help empower us every day of our lives by setting aside a half hour of time for meditation, (or alone time if that word is more pleasing to you) and do the following: 1. Darken the room and play classical music. Mozart is excellent but all classical is beneficial. 2. Don t be concerned if the music becomes loud or driving. Those frequencies changes are necessary to create the vibrations required. In a Tchaikovsky symphony, for instance, there are different ranges. There is joy, there is sorrow, and there is beauty. There are periods that are loud and challenging, and periods that are soft and reflective. Just like the life of each of us.
