2 Every grieving generation remembers the casualties of war in its own way. A Day The of Remembrance Legend of Calamity Evolves with Jane Grief So, Memorial Day, the day when we remember the men and women who died in war, has evolved. The beginning of the holiday is usually set in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established a Memorial Day to decorate the graves of the Union war dead. Throughout the Civil War, families and groups remembered fallen soldiers on many dates and in many places. North and South generally had different traditions for remembrance. Gradually, the traditions came together and by 1968, Congress designated the date as the last Monday in May. The Civil War posed new problems for the young republic of America. More than 600,000 soldiers (some say 750,000) died in the conflict, representing 2 percent of the population. (By comparison, U.S. losses in World War II were just over 400,000.) Once national cemeteries were established, the tradition of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers began in earnest. Today, veteran's groups, individuals and churches decorate graves with flags on Memorial Day, continuing the tradition of honoring the fallen. Graves and clothing are also frequently decorated with poppies, a symbol of sacrifice that became popular after World War I. It is said that for every drop of blood shed in war a poppy grows in remembrance. Health Corner Fewer than half of people who use a metered dose inhaler for asthma do so correctly, according to the Mayo Clinic Health Letter. Here is how to use an inhaler: Shake inhaler and attach a spacer A spacer is a separate chamber that you can attach to the end of the inhaler. Spacers have to be purchased separately from an inhaler. They enhance the effectiveness of inhalers by maximizing the dose of medicine into the lungs, decreasing the amount deposited into the throat. Spacers also cut down on the number of minor throat and mouth infections and irritations. Sit or stand upright and breathe in and out Breathe deeply two or three times. Then before you inhale the last time, place the spacer between your teeth and close your mouth tightly around the end. Inhale slowly Squeeze the inhaler once and slowly begin inhaling for five to seven seconds. After inhaling hold your breath for a few seconds more. Rinse your mouth This is especially important if you use a medicine such as Advair or other corticosteroids. Rinsing your mouth and throat can prevent thrush or other side effects such as hoarseness.

With a few setbacks in early spring, our weather is finally cooperating and produce will be getting better. Lettuces are already looking ten times better than that of the past month. Asparagus is starting a little bit of a decline, but other vegetables will be soon coming our way. Beginning May 1st Carlton Senior Living, as a company, will be using a single produce company for all of our properties. Trinity Fresh can deliver the same local products within this area, to our sister properties in the Bay Area. With great produce, comes a great events... May brings us Mother's Day, and wonderful brunch for all. Ideas are floating around, and we're jotting down menus. Bring your family, and have a great time. Our second event during May is Memorial Day BBQ Lunch. I love making BBQ Sauces, and other country favorites. Look for a secret sauce or two to pop up. Lastly, but certainly not least is our Annual Luau... That's right, our Annual Luau will be June 1st, and is right around the corner. We are beginning to get the menu together, the event planning, and overall excitement building throughout the community. Bring your grass skirt and cool shades, and join us June 1st! Many exciting things are coming on the horizon, and we're looking forward to the anticipation. If you have any recipes, ideas, or suggestions - feel free to drop them by the dining room, front desk, or me at mjackson@carltonseniorliving.com. Cheers... Chef MJ Our Garden

The warmer weather is just around the corner. I am hoping that all the April showers we had will bring us many May flowers. I can't wait to see the residents visiting in the courtyards, and soaking up the warm sun. Next time your out in the garden go in the back and check out the beautiful residents garden in the two big white planters. They have some beautiful flowers growing and I can wait to see what comes up in the vegetable garden. We are also planning on doing some gardening in the Memory Care garden. Can't wait to see what they plant. This time of year brings thoughts of longer days and warmer Sacramento nights. I can't wait for the warm weather to be here everyday and every night. I know Shantel will be planning some wonderful activities in our beautiful courtyard. At night when I leave, I love to see the residents, families and guest sitting outside by the fountain enjoying the weather and company. I hope you all enjoyed our Easter Brunch, and got a chance to visit with the Easter Bunny. We had over 150 guest, and everything went so smoothly. I hope to see you all at our annual Mother's Day Brunch. Mark your calendars for our Mother's Day Brunch on Sunday, May 14th, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. It is the brunch of the year. The culinary team has a beautiful Brunch planned with great decorations and even better food. Please make your reservations now. We want to make sure we have room for all of our guest. This is by far our most popular brunch and making reservations for this day will help us have enough food, and table set up for all. We usually have over 200 guest and it really helps us to have you RSVP. I hope you all are enjoying our Spring time weather. Make sure you take time out of your busy days to stop and smell the roses. 12 Consider the music that was given to the world by people like Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Bach and other greats. How could it have been possible for those composers to sit in rooms lit by candles, using a quill pen, to put together concerts, symphonies, operas, etc., with complex genius that reaches beyond the ability of people to do the same things today with computers and other modern technology? And Beethoven was deaf. Where did it come from and did it come to them for a reason? Why does the music of Mozart have such a deep effect on consciousness that something happens to the human mind when his music is played? (The Mozart effect.) A New Way to Think About Music Larry Dossey, M.D., in his article, The Body as Music says, Why are we moved by music? One reason may be that the body itself is intrinsically musical, right down to the DNA that makes up our genes. There is a deep connection between your DNA and the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky, et al, and the reason why they were able to compose such music in a dark room by candlelight, with a quill pen, is because the music was composed for them. The very essence of existence through the celestial connection of all life was playing magnificent music within them. There was no need for Beethoven to hear with his ears because what came through him on to the paper in the form of music was the coding sequences of life itself. DNA. And when that DNA is given expression to the ear, we were captured by the MOZART EFFECT. The vibrations that harmonize with our DNA through Beethoven s 9th symphony, or the solace and beauty, which ran through our very beings of Tchaikovsky s Pathetique was all planned. Our very existence is a symphony of love. We are created with a harmony of love flowing through our bodies and minds. Even in the Scripture, the text admonishes us to make a joyful noise to the Lord and to praise Him with musical instruments. Can you grasp this wonder? Our very DNA is God s music playing within us and this is why We may not be able to compose music that will touch the core of our being. We may not be able to create sounds to flow in harmony with the music of our DNA. The beauty of all of this is that we do not have to. The harmony is within us, flowing through our DNA. The music to harmonize with that DNA has been provided for us by the composers of long ago. We can use music to help empower us every day of our lives by setting aside a half hour of time for meditation, (or alone time if that word is more pleasing to you) and do the following: 1. Darken the room and play classical music. Mozart is excellent but all classical is beneficial. 2. Don t be concerned if the music becomes loud or driving. Those frequencies changes are necessary to create the vibrations required. In a Tchaikovsky symphony, for instance, there are different ranges. There is joy, there is sorrow, and there is beauty. There are periods that are loud and challenging, and periods that are soft and reflective. Just like the life of each of us.
