1 Symphony League Notes The newsletter of the North State Symphony League In Redding, CA November/December 2015 A Message from League President Patty Mullett: I am so excited about this season! There was a great response to Scott's first concert. We're looking forward to the Nov. 15 concert featuring "West Side Story. Plan to attend the reception afterward at Shirlee Spaid's home. It will be a great opportunity to meet Scott! I'm happy to report the Annie B Drive brought in $ to our account. It is a grant program which matches 6.5% to funds raised between Aug. 1 - Sept. 30. The North Valley Community Foundation has sponsored this drive for the last 10 years. The Foundation provides us fiscal support and enables us to maintain a nonprofit status. So a big thank you to all of you who sent in your money in that time period this year!! I look forward to seeing many of you at the concert!! We are off to a fantastic start in our new symphony season thanks to our great new Music Director, Scott Seaton, and the enthusiastic response of our audience. The first concert in September was a smashing success and the rest of the season promises to be just as wonderful. The League s role, as always, is to support the orchestra and its musicians in very concrete ways, like providing refreshments during concerts and housing musicians in our homes. And, of course, our Spring Gala brings in muchneeded financial support. But we can also be a huge factor in boosting ticket sales by inviting our friends and neighbors to attend these fabulous concerts. Word of mouth is always the best publicity. Thanks for all you do to support the board, staff and musicians of our North State Symphony. You play an important part in its ongoing success. - Sharon Rogers, Redding Board President
2 League Member Spotlight Tom Kaut moved to Redding with his family in the early 80s to get away from the Texas heat. The Redding summers still provide Tom the challenge of staying cool, but he s thrived here nonetheless. He serves as the administrator of Montessori Children s House of Shady Oaks. In addition, he is a regent of the North State Symphony and a member of the Redding League. We had the pleasure to engage in a little question and answer session with Tom. Here s what he has to say! Could you share a little about your history with music? My early memories are of classical music my mother used to listen to. Because of her influence I preferred classical music to popular music for most of my early years. I played clarinet for a year in high school, and later picked up guitar in my early 20s. After getting married my wife and I enjoyed listening to Rachmaninoff Concerto #2. My first time going to a North State Symphony concert reignited my love of classical music. What interests are you currently pursuing? I am going on 25 years as the administrator of Montessori Children's House of Shady Oaks. I am passionate about Montessori and early childhood education. One of our mandates is to help children experience the finest our culture has to offer in music and art. What is your favorite part of attending the NSS concerts? Experiencing first rate classical music from a variety of composers, lol! How did you first get involved with the Redding League? I went to the first Redding League Dinner at Riverview as a guest and supporter of the symphony. I have been almost every year and really enjoy this fundraiser for the symphony! Getting acquainted with others who are passionate about the symphony, hearing from the conductor, and listening to stellar performances from soloists keeps me coming back every year. What motivates you to be a part of the Redding League? I think the most important thing to me is supporting the children's concerts that the North State Symphony has done in Redding for many years now. When I first became involved NSS was only doing children's concerts in Chico, but not Redding. I helped to get support from a variety of early childhood organizations to fund the first few children's concerts for our community. What would you tell someone who was considering joining the League? Your involvement makes a difference, no matter how big or small...
