4 CSO Spotlight: Interview with Kellen Gray Kellen Gray recently joined the Charleston Symphony as Assistant Conductor and Music Director of the CSYO. Previously Kellen served as Project Inclusion Freeman Conducting Fellow and Assistant Conductor at Chicago Sinfonietta while fulfilling duties as Associate Conductor of the Columbus Ballet (GA) from Before leaving Chicago, Kellen made his Chicago Symphony Center debut. From , Kellen was Assistant Conductor at the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Valdosta Symphony Youth Orchestra. Also in 2016, he was one of eight Conducting Fellows at the Eastern Music Festival. Since 2015, Kellen has been a frequent Guest Conductor for the Georgia Independent Schools Association All- Select Honors Orchestra. Kellen received his earliest musical training from the public school system of South Carolina. He earned an undergraduate degree in Violin Performance and an Artist s Diploma in Orchestral Conducting from the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University (GA), and his Master s degree in Orchestral Conducting from Valdosta State University. Q: Did you grow up conducting imaginary orchestras? A: [Laughs] No. I wanted to be a paleontologist, studying dinosaurs or a herpetologist, studying amphibians. I was the kid with all the snakes, frogs and lizards. In 6th grade music class, I was introduced to the violin, and mostly taught myself until the age of 17. When it was time to apply for college, I realized I didn t love math but I did love music. Q: That s a leap. A: Because I lacked formal training, getting into college to study music was going to be a stretch but I was lucky: One of my father s former college professors heard me play, decided I was talented and took me under his wing. We worked really, really hard to get me ready for auditions in a fairly short period of time. Q: Your background as a conductor is unconventional state schools, no big name conservatories. A: Yes, I took the unpaved roads to a music career, but I had great mentors. I found strength in that sense of otherness. But I m glad -- it s what made me an advocate for diversity, inclusion and equality in classical music. But, (at the risk of sounding weird), I had another experience that impacted my thinking about orchestras: I was a beekeeper for a number of years. Q: Huh? A: I worked for the Savannah Bee Company for about four years. Honeybees are the most selfless creatures. (An ill bee leaves the hive so not to infect the others, for example). As a musician and wouldbe conductor, my experiences as a beekeeper changed me: I began listening across the ensemble more, not just to me. I love that as a conductor, I also help connect the orchestra and the audience. It s all about community; I feel I contribute more civically as a conductor than I was capable as a violinist. Q: Tell us about your focus on youth orchestras. Kellen Gray A: I didn t play in one growing up the nearest youth orchestra was 30 miles away and I couldn t have afforded to go. But, when I look at the role music has played in my world, music gave me a chance to have a far better life than I d otherwise have had. As a guest speaker at the League of American Orchestras, I discussed how difficult it is to become something that you can t see. Kids need to see diverse role models in order for them to dream of becoming conductors, herpetologists, you-name-it. Q: What do you bring to the symphony and the CSYO? A: One of the things that Ken [Lam] said to me early on was, At the symphony, we each wear many hats. If you re good at something you ll get to do it a lot. For the youth orchestra, the heritage that birthed music is extremely important -- like the soil is to a seedling. Music is more than sounds. Music has meaning and these young musicians need to understand how a piece was relevant when it was composed but also how it reflects today s world. Since this is about being part of an ensemble, a community, I want to help students take their experiences from the real world and translate them as a group into something powerful in the auditorium. But I also want the reverse: Learning that goes from the stage to the real world. Like being a beekeeper provide the basics and the bees thrive on their own. My job is to provide the conditions for success; these student-musicians will do the rest.
