University of San Diego Fall 2016 Music Department Camino Hall Alcalá Park San Diego, CA Phone: (619) Inside this issue: Chair s Corner 1-2 New Faculty 3 Our Grand Staff 4-5 Faculty Spotlight 6-8 Student News 9 Alumni Spotlight 10 Upcoming Events 11 Welcome to the academic year! We look forward to a wonderful year of new students, concerts and music events. The USD Music Department continues to grow and innovate and we have several initiatives underway. We have become more student centered and we invite you to help co-create new projects for the department. One announcement is that Dr. Jeff Malecki is now an assistant professor! He was promoted from being a professor of practice last year. The band program is moving and growing and we hope that students will get involved. Hopefully, most of you saw the celebration of the Canonization of Mother Teresa in Founders Chapel on September 25, which was organized by Dr. Malecki with some Dr. Amrein/Choral Scholars assistance. Dr. Malecki and the department have also submitted a proposal for a Music Education major emphasis, which we hope to initiate next fall. More on that as it develops. The Performing Arts Entrepreneurship minor degree program is up and running. I serve as advisor. As some of you know, the minor combines coursework in music, business, and theatre, and I am developing a list of potential internships at local organizations and institutions. If you are interested in the program or have any questions, please contact me. We believe that this minor will lead to more graduates having and sustaining careers in music. A related course that we hope to offer in the spring is MUSC 110 Concert Production, where students will gain direct experience in running sound, lights, video cameras, and the house. But speaking of careers in music, the department is organizing a workshop on careers in music on Tuesday, Nov. 15, during dead hours (12:15-1:20). Please put this on your calendar and attend. The faculty will discuss various career paths and we will have guest speakers tell you about their careers and how you can prepare your own. This is a mandatory meeting, which will include pizza, and we hope to make these workshops annual or even biannual. New faces: Dr. Chris Warren is the new instructor for MUSC 420 Digital Audio Composition. He is replacing Dr. Jeff Kaiser, who went to Central Missouri to take a tenure-track position in music technology and composition. Replacing Dr. Kaiser as Concert Manager is Joe Cantrell, who is also tentatively scheduled to teach MUSC 300 Career Design in Music next year. Juan Carlos Acosta is now codirecting Concert Choir with Dr. Amrein, and Peter Kozma is co-directing Opera Workshop with Theatre Arts instructor, Ryan Scrimger. Also of note is the new chair of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies (TAPS), Scott Ripley (TAPS had an interim department chair for five years!). We hope to initiate new collaborations with Mr. Ripley and TAPS, for instance in the area of Opera. The USD Music Department ensembles Chamber Music Ensembles, USD Strings, Choral Scholars, Concert Choir, Opera Workshop, Jazz Ensemble, Band, Gamelan Ensemble and Mariachi Ensemble are going well this semester, but please consider joining one or two for the spring. The ensembles are our showcases to the university and to the greater communities in San Diego. In other teaching news for spring 2017, Dr. Pfau will teach MUSC 336 Music Therapy, MUSC 331 Music History II and MUSC 333W Pro-seminar in Musicology; the latter is the only W course in the department this year and Dr. Pfau, currently on leave and performing in Europe, is tentatively planning to teach music and religion. Dr. Adler will teach the Honors course HNRS 390/391 Sound and Spirit, the upper-division Theory course MUSC 322 Rhythm and Time, and composition lessons MUSC 412. MUSC 220 will be taught by a guest theorist. Dr. Yeung will teach MUSC 121 Making Music Integrating Theory and Practice, MUSC 150/350 Chamber Music Ensembles, and MUSC

151/351 USD Strings. I will teach MUSC 140 Music in World Cultures and co-direct MUSC 157/357 Gamelan Ensemble with the maestro drummer, Tyler Yamin. Dr. Amrein will teach MUSC 152/352 Choral Scholars and multiple sections of MUSC 153/353 Concert Choir; Dr. Malecki teaches MUSC 156/356 Band and MUSC 130 Music and Society; Dr. Etheridge teaches MUSC 105 Class Piano (sections I and II), MUSC 205 Class Piano II, MUSC 101D American Music, and MUSC 120 Fundamentals of Music Theory; and Dr. Shaheen teaches MUSC 103 Music for the Stage, MUSC 107 Class Voice and MUSC 210 Aural Skills I. Justin Grinnell teaches MUSC 155/355 Jazz Ensemble, Serafin Paredes teaches MUSC 158/358 Mariachi Ensemble, Eric Foster teaches MUSC 108 Class Guitar, Chris Warren teaches MUSC 420 Digital Audio Composition, and Ruth Mayhew teaches MUSC 200 Comprehensive Musicianship for Educators. 4 Marilou is the Executive Assistant to the Chair of the Department of Music, Dr. David Harnish and to the Director of the Liberal Studies Program, Dr. Margaret Daley. Marilou manages the daily operations of the Music Department Office and serves as a liaison between the music faculty, interdepartmental campus offices, students, and the general public. As a proud alumna of USD (Class of '79), Marilou received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music (piano) and a California State single-subject teaching credential in music and taught at St. Therese Academy in the Diocese of San Diego immediately after graduation. In May of 2010, Marilou earned a Graduate Masters Certificate in Judicial Administration through the Department of Public Policy & Administration at CSU, Sacramento in close cooperation with the Administrative Office of the Courts. Having recently retired from a rewarding career of 26 years with the San Diego Superior Court as Court Operations Manager, Marilou feels she has come full circle; thrilled to "come home to USD" to support her beloved music department and the liberal studies program and to be surrounded with beautiful music echoing down the halls! On a personal note, Marilou enjoys spending time with her family, friends, being outdoors at picnics & camping trips, doing arts & crafts, and ballroom dancing with her husband. Featured in this photo is Marilou with her husband Dwight Alcantar...her partner in dance and in life! Anh is a senior general music major. She has immensely enjoyed her time as a student and staff in the Music Department. She plans to do a year of service upon graduation and her current career goal is to work in the nonprofit sector. Anh plays flute, is learning guitar, sometimes bangs on the cajon, and sings in and out of the shower. Outside of music, Anh likes to read, drink coffee, play in the rain, walk barefoot, and is slowly falling in love with film photography.

After much anticipation, we are happy to welcome Kiera back to the Music Department as our wonderful work-study. Kiera is a double major in music and business. She is still in awe of living in San Diego and having the opportunity to be on this amazing campus and around the friendly people of the music department everyday. Though a native Texan, she hopes to become an honorary Californian and work in California after graduation. She loves the beach, sunshine, and attending concerts. Kiera is a Choral Scholar and is excited for the upcoming year of making music! Jesseca Bates is a student worker from the Dean s office and she s helping the Music Department this semester. Jesseca was born in San Diego, grew up in Long Beach but moved to Memphis, TN two years ago. After gettomg her acceptance letter and participating in ME@USD, she knew she had to come back home. 6 Chris Warren, PhD, is the latest addition to our faculty. When he s not teaching Digital Audio Composition, Dr. Warren is hard at work building sonic sculptures. His work was featured at A Ship in the Woods as part of the show Flat Earth, The Slightly Altered Reality of Wrong Things which opened on September 25th. This show explored themes of pseudoscience, alternate histories, and other forms of incorrect information. In keeping with this theme, Dr. Warren will be unveiling his Omni-Audible Time Expansion Engine (pictured above), where four large satellite dishes have been repurposed as metal speakers. This interactive sonic installation piece takes the sounds of its inhabitants and transforms them, distorting them in time and pitch. Professor Emilie Amrein, DMA, traveled to Cologne and Aachen, Germany to perform with the Chamber Choir of the Collegium Musicum der Universität zu Köln on October 22 and 23. The USD Choral Scholars will collaborate with this ensemble in March of 2018 in Cologne and in San Diego.

Justin Grinnell had a busy Summer 2016 filled with teaching and performing. In June, Justin taught a 3-week "Introduction to Jazz" course at University of San Diego. In July, Justin served on the faculty of the Jazz 88.3/House of Blues Summer Jazz Workshop, a two week camp for middle and high school musicians at Francis Parker School. He has been a faculty member since the annual workshop's inception in Danny Green Trio Plus Strings performing for KSDS Jazz 88.3's "Jazz Live!" at San Diego City College. Justin Grinnell is in the middle playing the double bass. Justin continued to perform regularly as a member of the Danny Green Trio. Notably, the piano-bass-drums trio performed at the Merc in Temecula and the Blue Whale in Los Angeles. In June, the trio released their fourth album, "Altered Narratives," which is receiving national radio airplay. At the beginning of August, the trio, augmented with a string quartet, was featured on KSDS Jazz 88.3's Jazz Live series. Throughout the summer, Justin had numerous performances as an acoustic and electric bassist. Justin had a handful of shows with guitarist Peter Sprague, including one in San Diego at Holly Hofmann's Handlery Hotel jazz series and one in Orange County for the Laguna Beach Live series. He also performed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for one of Peter's newest projects, "Jazz Explorations of Rock Classics," where Peter transforms classic rock tunes into epic jazz-rock jams for a six-piece band. This summer, Justin also performed with vocalist Jonathan Karrant alongside pianist Joshua White, with the San Diego Symphony Pops "Sing Along With Broadway" and "DreamWorks Animation In Concert" programs, and as a guest performer at "Camp Jam," a music camp for kids with special needs presented by the Music Therapy Center of California. 8 Since the summer, I submitted six peer-review book chapters or articles, titled The Lives of Processions in Bali and Lombok, Indonesia in Public Festivities; Gendang Beleq: The Negotiation of a Music/Dance Form in Lombok, in Sounding the Dance, Moving the Music Maritime Southeast Asian Performing Arts in Choreomusicological Perspective; Revisiting and Revising the Ancestors: Performing Arts, Interethnic Union, and Balancing the Traditional and Modern at the Lingsar Festival in Lombok, in Religious Festivals in Contemporary Southeast Asia; The Challenges of Music Sustainability in Lombok, in Performing Indonesia; Religious Processions, Cultural Identities and Politics in Bali and Lombok, Yale Journal of Music and Religion; and Wayang Sasak: Historical, Religious and Social Forces in Lombok, Puppetry International. I also published an essay, Music and Islam in Indonesia, for a booklet in a major display at the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum. During last summer, I co-taught a course on Religion and the Performing Arts in Bali in May and June with Dr. Lance Nelson, gave two presentations at Udayana University in Bali, an earlier presentation titled Cecil Taylor and the Kyoto Prize at the Society for Ethnomusicology Chapter conference at UCLA, and the paper Strategies for Music Sustainability in Lombok, Indonesia at the Performing Arts of Southeast Asia conference in Penang, Malaysia. I did some gigs with the Latin rock band, La Revancha, and did some free-lance gamelan playing. Christopher Adler served as Director of Composition at the annual niefnorf Summer Festival at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, and then travelled to New York for the mise-en Festival where his solo flute composition 010 machine states was performed. He spent six weeks in Southeast Asia where he gave a conference presentation at ICTM-PASEA and gave multiple presentations about contemporary compositions for the Lao mouth organ. He ended the summer in Berlin where he worked with percussionist Katelyn King and videographer Ute Freund on a video version of his recent composition Zaum Box which will be released this fall. In January, 2017, he will perform in the annual soundon Festival of Modern Music at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla.

Ever since its rebirth in the Spring of 2011, Opera Workshop has trained USD students in the fine art of interpreting and presenting scenes from opera, operetta, and musical theater. That pursuit continues this semester, but with a change in personnel. Ron Shaheen has stepped down from his position as co-director, and the department has hired in his place Peter Kozma, who has extensive experience in directing operas, and is Artistic Director of Opera Neo, a Summer Opera Festival and Workshop held in San Diego. He completes a triumvirate of expertise that includes co-director Ryan Scrimger, who has directed several musicals for the Department of Theatre, and music director Stefani Walens, who has been founding music director for Ash Lawn Summer Opera Festival, and has coached and accompanied numerous opera productions at UCSD. Under their supervision, this semester in Opera Workshop students will present scenes from Purcell s Dido and Aeneas, Mozart s Le Nozze di Figaro, Rodgers and Hammerstein s Sound of Music, Berstein s Candide, and Sondheim s Sweeney Todd and Passion. The program will end with an ensemble number from Boublil and Schönberg s Les Misérables. The performance will be held on Sunday, December 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Shiley Theatre. After many years of doing scenes, the Opera Workshop is ready to go to the next level. Stay tuned for exciting upcoming developments. Participants in this semester s Opera Workshop (from bottom left around the piano): Stefani Walens, Ryan Scrimger, Adam Davis, Madeline Van Otten, Alexandra Lee, Michelle Wang, Ryan Merrill, Lauren Monahan, Peter Kozma, and Christina Kozlovsky. 10 Hayley Park graduated from the USD Music Department in May 2016 with a BA in Music with a vocal performance emphasis. She is currently pursuing her Master of Music Therapy at Arizona State University. Hello USD music family! I am loving every minute of the graduate program in music therapy at Arizona State University. I am thankful for the strong music background I received at USD because it has helped me jump right into this first semester. What is music therapy you may ask? "Music Therapy is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. After assessing the strengths and needs of each client, the qualified music therapist provides the indicated treatment including creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music" (American Music Therapy Association). Music therapists require rigorous training, a 6 month internship, and passing a board certification exam. I hope to do my internship with Seasons Hospice. In order to prepare for my internship this summer and fall I have two preclinical assignments this semester. I lead an older adult group of about 15 clients at an adult day center who have Alzheimer's, dementia, Parkinson's, etc. I play guitar or piano and sing and provide the clients with percussion instruments to play and sing along to familiar songs. The goals I have for them include social engagement, improved motor functioning, and increased cognitive functioning, both long and short-term memory. I also have a hospice client who I visit one-on-one in a nursing home. For this client, I play her favorite songs on guitar and sing for her and we discuss her life. Other classes I am taking involve subjects such as graduate research, music therapy interventions, assessment, improvisation, the therapeutic relationship and counseling, children's music therapy, special education, and self-care. It is amazing just how much is involved in becoming a music therapist! Everyday I feel like I learn something new and have access to the leading education in the field. In fact, I have the opportunity to help my professor with the second trial of her research study which explores music and memory by having members of the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra play music for older adults with dementia. I am very passionate about working with older adults and those in hospice. There are so many populations that can benefit from music therapy and I look forward to advancing the field and working with a variety of populations. If anyone has any questions about the music therapy field or continuing their education in music therapy, feel free to me at hayleypark10@gmail.com. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you have about music therapy or even life after graduation. Good luck to everyone and I miss you all! Hayley and her Children s Music Therapy class The Music Department would also like to congratulate Hayley on receiving the Senior Achievement Award from the international professional music fraternity Mu Phi Epsilon.
