5 1. Introduction Up to now communication between machines and human beings consisted basically in an output of characters on visual indicators. The acoustical output in this process was restricted to alarm signals released through buzzers by hooting or jingling. As the analog saving required the application of manoeuvrable elements like e. g. a tape drive which in turn prolongated the repeat time any real voice output realisable within an justifiable input of time and effort was impossible. The digital saving of speech on the other hand required the processing of a very high number of speechdata bits. The development of the speech-saving method has lead to a radical reduction of the bit rate i. e. of the required memory capacity for digital speech synthesis. 6 2. Assembly The voice synthesizer module is a complete voice synthesizer output system with extremely small dimensions achieved by a two-sided equipment of electronic assembly parts. Up to 250 seconds of speech output that can be sub-divided into 15 different messages can be released depending on the read-off frequency and the saving extension. The voice output is effected by a 12-Bit D/A converter with internal low-pass filter. The output performance of 4W is achieved through a separate output amplifier. 7 3. Operation The voice synthesizer recording and rendering system operates as follows: Speech is analised in real-time and filed in an external memory. This procedure is made by SCHAEFER. Handling procedure Input of the audio signal of the tape deck by a PC plug-in card over the A/D converter in the processor memory. Marking of the beginning and ending of the speech segment you want to work on. Analysis of the speech segment with subsequently coding in parameters. Wave-shaped graphical representation of the parameters on the screen. Editing i. e. processing of the single speech parameters. Determination of the length of time of the speech frames. Recording of the speech codes in EPROMs. Filing of the speech data on a floppy disk. The speech central processing unit synthesises the out of the memory recalled data on the rendering into a comprehensible language. There is a possibility to record entire sentences as well as single words or word groups. The data are filed in segments in the external memories and can likewise also be called up in sections. The speech central processing unit is controlled via a microprocessor. For codification of the speech a special modulation process is applied. 7

Your announcements recorded on an audio tape (in hi-fi quality) with any text will be programmed by SCHAEFER. The announcements are called up by closing or opening of a potential-free contact. An activation running parallel to the floor indication is possible. An additional PCB (UNI converter) is needed at parallel control to floor indication with extra/special announcements.
