2 Introduction to Profibus DP, Profibus P and Foundation Fieldbus asics There are two variations of PROFIU in use today; the most commonly used PROFIU DP, and the application specific, PROFIU P: PROFIU DP (Decentralised Peripherals) is used to operate sensors and actuators via a centralized controller in production (factory) automation applications. PROFIU P (Process utomation) is used to monitor measuring equipment via a process control system in process automation applications. This variant is designed for use in explosion/hazardous areas (Ex-zone 0 and 1). The Physical Layer conforms to IEC , which allows power to be delivered over the bus to field instruments, while limiting current flows so that explosive conditions are not created, even if a malfunction occurs. The number of devices attached to a P segment is limited by this feature. P has a data transmission rate of kbit/s. However, P uses the same protocol as DP, and can be linked to a DP network using a coupler device. The much faster DP acts as a backbone network for transmitting process signals to the controller. This means that DP and P can work tightly together, especially in hybrid applications where process and factory automation networks operate side by side. Profibus P and Fieldbus foundation use the same physical layer with different connector types on the stub connection. FCon fieldbus distributors FCon fieldbus distributors are available in industrial and EEx (ia) versions. They are used for coupling 1 8 field devices or sensors onto the backbone via stub cables. The stub cables are connected by an M12 (Profibus) or 7/8 (Foundation Fieldbus) plug-in connector or by wiring directly to internal tension clamp connectors via an EMC cable gland. The communication and device power is handled by a common 2-core wire. Colour coding The standard distributors are finished in grey paint, the Ex-approved distributors are blue. Fieldbus Foundation distributors are black. us Termination PROFIU-P distributors are generally equipped with a switch-in terminating resistor. In potentially explosive areas, the terminating resistor is manufactured with a separate box and must be used instead of the right-hand cable gland. In the case of PROFIU-DP, an additional external 24Vdc power supply is required. This makes the terminator independent of the last station in the network. J.2

The branches (T-pieces) connect the individual field devices or remote I/Os to the bus cable. The length of the branch cable depends on the transmission rate and should be as short as possible. The total of all branch lengths for transmission rates up to 1.5 Maud may not exceed max. 6.6 m. The trunk cable passes through an EMC cable gland into an aluminium enclosure where it is connected to a tension clamp terminal. The enclosure has a pressure compensation element to counteract the effects of climatic cycles.
