ULTRAVOICE VX CONTROL ELEMENTS Thi chapter contain decription of variou control element of your ULTRAVOICE. All control and connection are dicued in detail. Additionally, ueful advice about their poible application i alo given. 2.1 Dicrete vintage input tage Fig. 2.1: Dicrete vintage input tage Thi ection of your ULTRAVOICE contain a preamplifier that allow you to determine the input level of mic or line ignal. Ue the LINE witch to elect the type of input ignal ued (in = LINE; out = MIC). Pre the +48V witch to provide condener microphone with the neceary phantom power upply voltage. Dynamic microphone need no additional upply voltage. The GAIN control adjut the input level. The cale ranging from -12 to +12 db refer to the LINE input, the 10 through 60 db cale to the MIC input. The SIG LED above the GAIN control light up a oon a a ignal i preent at the input. Make ure that the CLIP LED light up only occaionally during loud paage. If it light permanently or you can hear audible ditortion, you hould reduce the input level with the GAIN control. The ULTRAVOICE ha a low-cut filter that eliminate lowfrequency interference from your microphone ignal. Ue the LO CUT witch to activate thi function. The filter ha a lope of 12 db/oct. With the FREQUENCY control you can determine the frequency below which interference ignal are uppreed (15 Hz through 360 Hz). The Ø INV witch invert the ignal phae by 180. Ue thi function in a multi-microphone et-up if you detect phae cancellation in pecific frequency band. 2. CONTROL ELEMENTS 5

2.2 Expander and tube emulation 2.3 Opto compreor Fig. 2.2: Expander and tube emulation The expander reduce the ignal level during oft paage, o a to eliminate interference uch a tape hi or crotalk. Ue the IN/OUT witch to activate or bypa the expander in the ignal path. The THRESHOLD control adjut the level above which the expander come in. The DEPTH control determine the degree of ignal reduction. The higher thi value, the more ignal reduction i applied. Pre the GATE witch to make the expander work like a noie gate, which not only reduce the ignal level during oft paage but cut it completely. The gate function hould therefore be applied to ingle ignal only, o a to avoid affecting the entire recording. The four GAIN REDUCTION LED ignal the degree of level reduction applied from -5 through -30 db. The tube emulation function allow you to add a ubtle ditortion or tape aturation effect to vocal. Known from analog tape recorder and tube amplifier thi effect add ome upper harmonic to the ignal and hence enhance it in the treble range. Ue the IN/OUT witch to enable/diable the tube emulation function. The DRIVE control govern the intenity of the aturation effect. The more you turn it to the right (HOT), the more pronounced the effect will be. The portion of upper harmonic produced alo depend on the input level adjuted in the dicrete vintage input tage. The SIG LED light up when the tube emulation function ha been witched on. To avoid internal ditortion, the CLIP LED hould never light up all the time, but only briefly during very loud paage. The TUNING control determine the frequency range to be proceed with the aturation function. A all other range remain unaffected, you can apply thi effect to pecific frequency range. Pre the FULL BW witch to proce the entire frequency pectrum. In thi cae, the TUNING control i inoperative. Fig. 2.3: Opto compreor The opto compreor reduce the dynamic of the input ignal, i.e. the difference between oft and loud paage become maller. Level peak exceeding a pecific threhold will be cut back to mooth out the overall ound image. The IN/OUT witch activate the compreor. Ue thi witch to make a direct A/B comparion between compreed and uncompreed ignal. The THRESHOLD control determine the input level above which the opto compreor tart proceing the input ignal. Only if the adjuted threhold i exceeded will the compreor be activated. The dynamic of oft paage below that level remain unproceed. The lower the threhold you chooe, the more compreion will be applied. The HARD RATIO witch et the ignal reduction to maximum, producing a highly compreed ound whoe dynamic are completely leveled out. Don t ue thi function if you want to preerve the natural dynamic of the input ignal. Pre the FAST witch if you want the opto compreor to react quickly, once the threhold ha been urpaed. In thi cae, the overall ignal will be coniderably more compreed, producing a very powerful ound. Ue the RELEASE control to adjut the compreor releae time, which i the time that tart when the ignal ha fallen back below the threhold. The longer the releae time, the more compreed and balanced the ound image will be. The OUTPUT control govern the output level of the compreed ignal. A compreion reduce the ignal level, you can ue thi control to make up for the level reduction. Compreion may uppre pecific frequency range. The built-in ENHANCER allow you to make up for thi and round out the ound image by giving it new brilliance. The ix GAIN REDUCTION LED diplay the degree of compreion ranging from -3 through -24 db CONTROL ELEMENTS

2.4 Voice-optimized EQ 2.5 Opto de-eer and mater ection Fig. 2.4: Voice-optimized EQ The Voice-Optimized EQ i a 3-band equalizer for creative ound haping. You can raie or lower the level of pecific frequency range to make up for tonal deficiencie of the input ignal. Ue the IN/OUT witch to activate the voice-optimized EQ. The TUNING control elect a pecific frequency range (130 Hz through 720 Hz). The WARMTH control allow you to raie or lower the level of the frequency range elected. In level reduction mode the bandwidth i narrower than in level boot mode, i.e. you can adapt the filter etting pecifically to the application concerned. Ue the PRESENCE control to give the ignal more high and upper midrange brilliance (around 1700 Hz), o a to bring vocal more to the front and give them more preence in the overall ound image. The BREATH control allow you to raie or lower the treble range, for example, to boot or cut vocal-pecific frequencie (e.g. breathing noie ). The frequency range proceed i around 8 khz. The ABSENCE witch lower thoe frequencie around 4 khz that are reponible for a harh and naty ound. Fig. 2.5: Opto de-eer and mater ection Vocal track are often affected by unwanted ibilant ound. The opto de-eer allow you to eaily remove interference of that kind. Pre the IN/OUT witch to activate the opto de-eer. The THRESHOLD control determine the amount of uppreion applied to ibilant ound. The lower thi value, the more ibilance i removed. Ue the CUT FREQ control to elect the frequency range to be removed from the overall ound image. The ACTIVE LED how you that the opto de-eer i on. The more proceing i applied to the ignal, the brighter the LED light up. + When uing the opto de-eer, don t chooe too low a threhold, o a to avoid affecting the original ound character of the program material. You have found the bet etting for thi parameter, when the difference to the unproceed ignal can be heard only by way of a direct A/B comparion with the IN/OUT witch. The MASTER FADER adapt the output ignal to meet the input enitivity of downtream device (e.g. DAT or harddik recorder). + When you adjut the ignal level, you hould tart with the lowet level poible and raie it lowly until the level have been adapted properly. If you tart with too high a level, you rik damaging the input tage of downtream device! ATTENTION! + We would like to bring your attention to the fact that extremely loud ound level may damage your hearing a well a your headphone. Pleae lower all MASTER knob leftward before powering up the unit. The ix OUTPUT LEVEL LED read the output level from - 10 through +15 db. Ue the POWER witch to power up your VX2000. The POWER witch hould alway be in the Off poition when you are about to connect your unit to the main. + Attention: The POWER witch doe not fully diconnect the unit from the main. Unplug the power cord completely when the unit i not ued for prolonged period of time. 2. CONTROL ELEMENTS 7

2.6 Rear panel Fig. 2.6: Rear panel connector of the ULTRAVOICE Thi i the balanced XLR connector for microphone (MIC) or LINE-level ignal. The LINE input i on a balanced 1/4" TRS jack. Thi i the INSERT ection on two 1/4" mono jack that provide the SEND and RETURN to other effect device. The ignal i taken pot-lo CUT-filter (input tage). The XLR RECORDING output i for DAT/hard-dik recorder, etc. and i taken pre-opto de-eer. Thee are the MAIN output of the ULTRAVOICE, which are on balanced XLR and 1/4" TRS jack. The main connection i achieved via the tandard IEC connector. A matching power cord i included. SERIAL NUBMER. The erial number i located on the rear of the unit. Pleae take a few minute and end to u a completely filled out warranty card within 14 day of the original date of purchae. Otherwie, warranty claim may be rendered invalid. Or fill out the warranty information online at FUSE COMPARTMENT/VOLTAGE SELECTION: Before plugging the unit into a power ocket, pleae make ure you have elected the correct voltage. Faulty fue mut be replaced with fue of appropriate rating without exception. Some unit feature a fue compartment that can be operated in two different poition, allowing alternating between 230 V and 120 V. Attention: when uing the unit outide of Europe (running on 120 V), you have to implement a fue with a higher rating. 3. RECORDING WITH THE ULTRAVOICE When you re recording with the ULTRAVOICE you hould try to achieve a natural ound image of high quality in the firt place. Any pecial ound of the program material can be realized later on during the mixdown, without affecting the recorded ignal. 1) Ue the GAIN control of the dicrete vintage input tage to et a gain level that uit the input material. 2) Be ure to take all meaure that enable you to achieve the bet ound poible: Check the microphone for it optimum poition and the room acoutic for compliance with the ound you wih to achieve. Start by diabling all component of the ULTRAVOICE in order to optimize the dry, i.e. unproceed ignal. 3) If required, ue the opto compreor to mooth out the overall ignal dynamic. Avoid overcompreing the ignal, you can compre it again after recording. Don t ue the hard ratio function in the firt place, becaue it affect your ignal audibly. If the inger doen t keep a teady ditance between mouth and microphone, the vocal may uffer from coniderably varying dynamic. In thi cae, you hould chooe a higher compreion etting. Set a relatively low threhold level on the opto compreor to enure a contant loudne level. + Make ure that inger keep a teady ditance between mouth and microphone, o a to avoid the need for exceive compreion. When you re recording backing vocal, the ignal hould be compreed heavily to produce a teady loudne level during the entire recording. 4) Ue the voice-optimized EQ to make up for deficiencie in the ound image, which cannot be eliminated before. Don t ue extreme etting, you can till add ome equalization during the mixdown. The voice-optimized EQ can be ued to olve the following problem: If a vocal track lack tranparency in the ba range, you can ue the WARMTH control to fade out low-frequency ignal. Set the control to full reduction, then ue the TUNING control to identify the diturbing frequency range, until the vocal are more balanced in ound. Start by oloing the track, then check it together with the remaining ignal. Adjut the WARMTH control until the overall ound i perfect. If the vocal are too harh, ue the ABSENCE witch of the voice-optimized EQ to attenuate the frequencie that are reponible for the harh ound. Additionally, you can turn up the WARMTH control a bit or ue the BREATH or PRESENCE control to filter the ignal highfrequency range. If the vocal are drowned out in the overall mix, increae their PRESENCE to bring them more to the front. If the overall ignal lack brilliance, you can enhance the treble range with the PRESENCE or BREATH control. Or ue the opto compreor enhancer function to add ome upper harmonic. 5) If the vocal track contain unwanted frequencie, you can ue the expander and opto de-eer to remove them. The opto-de-eer alo eliminate diturbing ibilance. Firt, you need to identify the frequency range containing unwanted ignal: Activate the voice-optimized EQ and turn up the BREATH control to raie the ibilant frequency range. If you have already ued the EQ, remember the original etting to be able to reproduce it later on. Activate the opto de-eer; adjut a low threhold then turn the CUT FREQ control until the ibilant ound are audibly lowered in level. Now you can diable the voice-optimized EQ and/or et the BREATH control back to it original poition. Adjut the threhold o that the ACTIVE LED light up with ibilant ound only. The expander allow you to remove diturbing ignal in lowvolume paage. Set the THRESHOLD control fully counterclockwie, chooe a medium DEPTH rate, then turn the THRESHOLD lowly to the right, until oft paage are audibly reduced in level, without affecting the quality of vocal track. While recording, the gate function hould only be ued in extreme cae, for example, to produce a pecial effect. The gate i quite effective on the overall ound image and could ruin your recording RECORDING WITH THE ULTRAVOICE

6) Ue the tube emulation function to give your recording the ound of a claic analog tape recorder. 7) Finally, the MASTER FADER allow you to control the output volume of your ULTRAVOICE. 4. MIXDOWN WITH THE ULTRAVOICE Feel free to ue the ULTRAVOICE and it function during the mixdown. Often, extreme effect and filter etting are needed to make a pecific ignal fit into the overall ound. Vocal featuring high preence and a full ound in the mix have uually been tweaked heavily before. Normally, vocal track are enhanced with reverb during the mixdown. If the reverb ignal contain unwanted noie (e.g. ibilance), you can ue the opto de-eer to remove uch interference ignal. Do a decribed below: Remove ibilance from vocal track a decribed above, then ue one of the main output (not the INSERT path, which i pre-de-eer!) to drive the reverb unit. Be ure to et the direct level on the reverb unit to zero to proce the wet ignal only. Now, add the reulting reverb ignal to the conole output ignal taken from the RECORDING output of your VX2000. Thi ignal i pre-de-eer. In thi way, unwanted ignal are removed from the reverb ignal only, but not from the wanted ignal. You can ue the expander to eliminate interference from other intrument recorded e.g. via the headphone of the inger. Pleae note that any compreion applied to thi ignal would be counterproductive, becaue it would limit the ignal during loud paage and hence raie the unwanted interference in level. Although the ULTRAVOICE ha been primarily deigned for vocal recording, you can alo ue it to record and mix down any other ignal. 5. THE ULTRAVOICE IN LIVE APPLICATIONS A in the tudio, the ULTRAVOICE will be your ueful ound haper and problem olver for live application a well. On mall tage, the hort ditance between microphone and monitor peaker can caue feedback. In thi cae, you hould try the VX2000 opto de-eer: Set the THRESHOLD control to a relatively low value. Ue the CUT FREQ control to identify the frequency range that caue the feedback. 6. INTEGRATION INTO A RECORDING SYSTEM A mentioned above, your ULTRAVOICE i equipped for direct connection to recording media uch a DAT recorder, analog tape recorder or digital hard-dik-baed computer ytem. You don t need to ue a mixing conole and can hence benefit from a much clearer ignal, becaue potential interference ignal produced by the conole circuitry are excluded right from the tart. If you wih to integrate your VX2000 into a hard-dik recording ytem, you will need an analog-to-digital converter which convert the analog ignal from the microphone preamplifier into digital. Naturally, you can alo ue a conventional mixing conole to integrate the ULTRAVOICE into your tudio environment. Like any other preamplifier, it connect to the balanced microphone or line input on the conole and with it wealth of function it i a perfect tool for a great variety of application. 7. AUDIO CONNECTIONS 7.1 Rack mounting The BEHRINGER ULTRAVOICE VX2000 require one height unit (1 HU) for being intalled into a 19" rack. Pleae allow at leat an extra 4" of pace for the connector on the rear panel. Alo, pleae make ure that ufficient ventilation of the unit i provided for, and never put the rack mixer onto an amp or imilar equipment to avoid overheating. Pleae ue M6 machine crew and nut to intall your VX2000 into a rack. 7.2 Audio connection You will need many different cable for the variou application. The following illutration how how thee cable hould be laid out. Pleae ue excluively high-grade cabel. The audio connector of your VX2000 are electronically balanced and enure automatic hum and noie reduction. Of coure, you can alo connect equipment featuring unbalanced output. To thi end, ue either mono jack or connect ring and leeve of the tereo jack (bridge pin 1 and pin 3 when uing XLR connector). + Pleae enure that only qualified peronnel intall and operate the VX2000. During intallation and operation the uer mut have ufficient electrical contact to earth. Electrotatic charge might affect the operation of the unit. Now, turn up the THRESHOLD until the vocal are leat affected and feedback i uppreed effectively. With high volume level on tage, there a lot of crotalk, i.e. the microphone pick up not only the wanted ignal (e.g. vocal), but alo other ignal ource around them. Thi can be much of a problem, becaue you can no longer proce the ingle ignal independently of each. Ue the expander to iolate ingle ignal and remove crotalk, which i lowered in volume, while the louder wanted ignal remain unaffected. For thi application the gate function prove quite handy to remove unwanted ignal completely. However, be ure to keep the wanted ignal unaffected, when the gate cut off the ignal once they have dropped below the threhold. Thu, oft paage could be cut off, even though they are uppoed to fade out moothly. The gate threhold. Thu, oft paage could be cut off, even though they are uppoed to fade out moothly. The gate can alo be ued to proce pule-type ound (e.g. nare drum, kick drum, tom-tom, etc.), a thee ignal have relatively hort attack and releae time. Fig. 7.1: XLR connector 7. AUDIO CONNECTIONS 9
