The LED of the active preet light up. + The preet are grouped in ix different categorie (ee chapter 3.1). Ue the PRESETS control to elect one of the 16 different effect preet. Ue the INPUT LEVEL control to adjut the input ignal level. Thi determine to a great extent how much compreion i applied. If the level i too low, it may happen that the compreor doe not work, irrepective of the preet elected. Therefore, a ufficiently high input level hould be choen, a decribed in chapter 4.1. The ENHANCER button activate a compenation circuit which boot the treble range and thu make up for any high-frequency lo that may reult from high compreion ratio. Ue the OUTPUT LEVEL control to raie the loudne of the mix ignal and benefit from the dynamic range achieved by compreion. Ue the METER button to chooe whether the LED diplay how the INPUT or OUTPUT ignal. Alway monitor the output level when raiing it with the OUTPUT LEVEL control. The IN/OUT button enable/diable the ignal proceing circuitry of the COM800. The COM800 work only when thi button i lit. If it doe not how, the input ignal i routed directly to the output without any proceing. The GAIN RED LED diplay the amount by which the ignal level i reduced due to the compreion proce. The diplay read from top to bottom, i.e. the lowet amount of reduction i hown by the top LED, while all the LED down to the bottom LED light up when maximum gain reduction i applied. The LED diplay allow you to monitor the input and output level. It comprie 6 LED. Ue the highet input/output level poible, o that the compreor work mot effectively. When the CLIP LED light up, thi indicate that ditortion may occur within the circuitry of the COM800. In thi cae, the ignal level mut be reduced. The witch turn your MINICOM COM800 on and off. The witch light up when the unit i witched on. 2. CONTROL ELEMENTS AND CONNECTIONS 7

+ Merely witching the unit off doe not mean that it i fully diconnected from the main. To diconnect the unit from the main, pull out the main connector. Pleae make ure before intallation that the main connector ha not been damaged. If you do not ue the unit for an extended period of time, pleae diconnect it at the main. 2.2 The rear Fig. 2.2: Rear panel connector of the COM800 The COM800 i connected to the main uing a 2-pole POWER connector jack. A matching main adaptor i included with the unit. + Alway ue the main adaptor upplied with the unit to avoid damage to your COM800. The two OUTPUT connector are on 1/4" jack and provide an unbalanced left/right ignal. When you elect a mono preet, both jack will provide the ame mono ignal. The I/O LEVEL witch determine the level ued by the ignal proceing circuitry of the COM800: -10 dbv (home recording level) or +4 dbu (tudio level). + Make ure to et the correct reference level that matche the operating level ued by other equipment connected. Otherwie, ditortion may be caued and your COM800 will not function optimally (ee chapter 4.1). The two INPUT connector are on 1/4" jack. Alway ue balanced patch cord with 1/4" plug or tandard inert cable (unbalanced connection). Mono ignal hould be connected to the L jack. SERIAL NUMBER CONTROL ELEMENTS AND CONNECTIONS

3. THE PRESETS OF THE MINICOM The COM800 come with a total of 16 different preet. Thee pre-programmed compreor etting ave you a lot of work and trouble. Depending on the application in quetion they give you the deired reult. You don t have to be familiar with the complex parameter of a compreor for your muic to benefit from the ue of the COM800. Some preet are deigned for tereo ignal, ome can be ued for mono ignal only. Depending on the preet choen you can ue your COM800 to proce ingle or mix ignal. + When uing a mono preet only one mono ignal can be proceed with the COM800. In thi cae pleae ue the INPUT jack L (MONO). It i not poible to proce two mono ignal independently of each other! 3.1 Preet categorie The COM800 feature preet for compreing individual ignal (e.g. guitar, drum, etc.) or tereo/ mix ignal (e.g. keyboard, main mix, ub-group). In the end, only the ound achieved determine whether or not a preet i the right one for the deired reult. &DWHJRU\ 1R 3UHVHW (IIHFW 7\SH Vocal Drum + percuion Guitar Keyboard Limiter All-round/ pecial VOCAL SOFT VOC MEDIUM VOC POWER Moderate compreion with ufficient dynamic for optimum integration of vocal in the mix. Ideal for ballad. Medium compreion which bring the vocal in the mix to the foreground, but leave enough room for vocal dynamic. Ideal for hip-hop and pop. Strong compreion for a very preent vocal ound without any compromie. Ideal for dance, hard rock and heavy metal. Mono Mono Mono Fat ound for ba and nare drum, which retain the high-energy FAT DRUMS Mono 4 attack phae of the intrument. 5 PERCUSS. Dene and preent ound for drum/percuion. Stereo E-BASS ACOUST GUIT E-GUITAR Powerful compreion, which give electric bae preence in the lower frequency range that you can actually feel. Increae the preence of the ignal and make the characteritic plucking ound of acoutic guitar audible, o that they don t get drowned out in the mix. Produce the hard-edge ound of ditorted electric guitar with contant preence. Mono Mono Mono GRAND Limit the enormou dynamic of the piano for a more conitent Stereo 9 PIANO ound, which better integrate into the mix and ha more punch. 10 FAT SYNTH Fat ound for aggreive forefront ynth ound. Stereo KEYB PAD Reduce the dynamic range of keyboard pad ound, which can make a mix rather muddy with their exceive dynamic range. 11 4. THE MINICOM IN PRACTICE Typically, muic production comprie three tep: the actual recording a well a the mix and matering procee. Firt of all, individual ignal are recorded. In a computer-baed production environment thi mean that each intrument i recorded on a different track. When uing oftware ound generator, the individual ignal are directly available from the computer. Mixing mean that the volume level of the intrument are adjuted, effect are added were needed and the frequency range of each intrument i optimized with equalizer. During the matering proce equalizer and control amplifier are ued to give the mix the finihing touch, o a to achieve a homogeneou ound and optimum loudne. Compreor have become the tandard tool for dynamic proceing during all tage of a production. Today, thee popular control amplifier are widely ued for muic production. Traditionally, compreor are ued to limit the dynamic range of a ignal, i.e. to reduce the difference between the highet and the lowet ignal level. Thi i ueful, in particular, to control volume fluctuation in intrument ignal during the mixing proce. In addition, compreion can alo be ued to enhance the ound of a production. 4.1 How to et level correctly The I/O LEVEL witch Before you can give your ignal additional punch and power, pleae make ure to et the level of your MINICOM correctly. Firt of all, adjut the proper operating level uing the I/O LEVEL witch on the rear panel of the unit. -10 dbv are ued in a conumer environment, +4 dbu in profeional recording tudio. Many emi-profeional audio card and tudio device can be et accordingly by mean of a hardware/oftware witch. Mixing conole uually work with the profeional 4 dbu level, while guitar, bae, keyboard and conumer equipment (CD/MD-DAT player/recorder) ue -10 dbv. If you are not ure which level to ue, pleae conult the uer manual of your device or imply try which etting give you a reaonable level on the IN/OUT LED diplay. Alway make ure that the INPUT LEVEL control i et to zero and the METER witch to INPUT. + If you can elect the operating level ued by your tudio equipment, pleae be ure to have the ame level ued by all device Signal adjutment Wire the MINICOM a decribed in chapter 5.1, depending on the application. Now, apply the ignal to be compreed and ue the METER witch to et the IN/OUT LED diplay to INPUT, o that it how the input level. Turn the INPUT LEVEL control, until the ignal level diplayed i around the 0 db marking between -6 db and +6 db and the CLIP LED doe not light up. Select the preet of your choice and activate the compreor in the ignal path with the IN/OUT button. The GAIN RED LED diplay the gain reduction produced by the compreion proce. Check the output ignal by etting the IN/OUT LED diplay to OUTPUT uing the METER witch, and raie the level until the ignal i around the 0 db marking between -6 db and +6 db. Since the GAIN RED LED how the gain reduction achieved by compreion, they give you an indication of the level by which the ignal can be raied with the OUTPUT LEVEL control. 4. THE MINICOM IN PRACTICE 11

4.2 Giving intrument more preence Compreor are mot often ued to optimize the level of individual ignal during recording or mixing. When doing a mix you have urely noticed at ome point or other that it i difficult to control the volume of ome ignal. Let take vocal a an example: When all etting are ok for the vere, you can be ure that the vocal are too loud in the choru, becaue the inger uddenly turn up the volume. Additionally, even language-baed difference in volume and changing ditance between inger and microphone can lead to paage getting drowned in the mix. A compreor i the ideal olution to thi typical problem: it limit the dynamic range and produce are more conitent ignal which integrate better into the mix. In particular, very dynamic, non-percuive acoutic intrument uch a acoutic guitar, vocal, etc. benefit from compreion when you need to make them audible alongide very dominant ound and get more control over their dynamic behavior. In addition to the more baic tak of limiting the dynamic range, extreme compreor etting can produce intereting ound change. Thi effect i mot often ued for drum ound, but intereting reult can be achieved with other ignal, too. Thi can range from making the intrument-pecific decay phae of percuive intrument clearly heard (drum, acoutic guitar, piano, etc.) to attenuating the attack phae. Through the conitent ue of compreor for individual ignal during the mix, the overall mix get dener and can be proceed more effectively during the ubequent matering proce. But you hould alway keep in mind that compreion doe not necearily benefit your muic production. Therefore, the reult hould alway be evaluated critically and played to the unbiaed ear of other people Uing the MINICOM a a traditional compreor If you have a mixing conole you can connect the MINICOM to the inert path of the ingle channel whoe ignal you wih to compre. To proce an entire group of intrument you could alo ue a ub-group inert. If your mixing conole ha no inert, you can connect the MINICOM directly between ignal ource and mixing conole for line-level ignal (ee chapter and 5.1.2). The following etting are made on the device: Depending on the ignal, elect a uitable preet and adjut the input/output level a decribed in chapter If the compreed ignal lack brilliance, you can activate the enhancer circuit (button ). Ue the IN/OUT button to keep comparing the compreed ignal with the original ignal. Thi i to enure that the quality of your production benefit from the dynamic proceing and doe not tend to ound cluttered due to incorrect etting. If the ignal i too flat and lack life, you can try to reduce the input level lightly with the INPUT LEVEL control, or elect another preet. 4.3 Giving muic production more punch Today muic production need one thing in particular: maximum loudne, or volume. Production with a broad dynamic range uually ound thin and lack the neceary punch, epecially when it dance or pop muic. In contrat to matered track with high loudne, uch production have a poor and inhomogeneou ound due to volume difference. Since audio device and recording/playback media have a limited dynamic range, ignal can be recorded with limited loudne only, which i predetermined by the technically feaible level of the medium (CD, DAT, TAPE, etc.) THE MINICOM IN PRACTICE

Thee limit mut be exploited fully to achieve maximum volume in a production. However, uncompreed ignal have a great number of tranient ignal peak, which can be ignificantly louder than the average ignal level. Thee ignal peak repreent the maximum limit to which the level can be raied. Since thee are ignal peak, the dynamic range i ued only briefly. The average ignal level actually perceived by the litener, however, i far below thee ignal peak. The following figure illutrate thi relationhip. Fig. 4.1: Waveform view of the compreion proce Compreor can minimize ignal peak, i.e. can reduce them in volume. Thu, previouly unued dynamic range i available which give you ome cope to raie the loudne level of your production. Your muic become dener and it loudne i effectively raied. In matering terminology thi proce i known a maximizing. The term limiting refer to the neceary compreor etting. So, a limiter i a particularly effective compreor Uing the MINICOM a a maximizer If you have a mixing conole you can connect the MINICOM to the inert path of the main-mix bu or a ub-group inert. In the latter configuration, you have to route your mix to the correponding ub-group (ee chapter 5.1.1). If your work i completely computer-baed or if your mixing conole ha no inert on the main-mix bu, you can alo connect the MINICOM directly to the output of your audio card/mixing conole (ee chapter 5.1.2). The following etting are made on the device: Select the preet HARD LIMIT (12), SOFT LIMIT (13) or PRESSURE (14) and adjut the input/output level a decribed in chapter Activate the enhancer circuit (button ) to make up for the high-frequency lo caued by the limiting proce. 4. THE MINICOM IN PRACTICE 13

5. INSTALLATION 5.1 Connection option and audio connection There are variou way to integrate the COM800 into your et-up. Depending on the application in quetion, you will need different et of connecting cable The MINICOM in the inert path Connect the MINICOM via the inert path of a mixing conole if you want to compre individual ignal or ub-group compriing everal intrument. Ue tandard inert cable. Thee Y cable have two 1/4" TS connector at one end, and one 1/4 TRS connector at the other. Connect the plug marked Send to the INPUT L jack of the COM800. Connect the Return plug to the correponding OUTPUT L jack of the device. Connect the TRS connector to the inert jack of the channel trip on the mixing conole. For ub-group tereo compreion ue two inert cable and elect a uitable preet. The econd cable mut be connected to the INPUT/OUTPUT R jack of the COM800. 15 MINICOM COM The MINICOM a a mix-ignal compreor connected in erie If your mixing conole ha no inert connector, you can alo connect the MINICOM to the output of an audio card or the main-mix output of a mixing conole. In thi configuration the output of the mixing conole/audio card are connected to the input of the MINICOM. Then, connect the output of the COM800 directly to the recording device or the input of the audio card. The following illutration how the correponding wiring cheme.
