In thi cae, the ampling rate will be determined by the digital ignal applied. Otherwie, the ULTRAMATCH PRO can only be operated a an A/D converter, and the D/A converter function will be muted. In SRC mode the D/A converter i alway active. 3. APPLICATIONS 9

3 2 Sample rate converion No matter what type of digital audio ignal you feed into the ULTRAMATCH PRO, it will convert it to a common tandard format Numerou converion example can be found in daily tudio practice: Converion of 48 khz DAT recording to the CD tandard of 44 1 khz Converion of older digital recording from khz to 32, 44 1, 48, 88 2 or 96 khz Converion of foreign material with 32 khz to 44 1, 48, 88 2 or 96 khz Converion of audio data with a word length of 24 bit to 20 or 16 bit for recording on a digital medium Converion of S/PDIF format to AES/EBU for eay manipulation of variou parameter and improved (balanced) ignal tranmiion Setting or removing copy protect bit for further proceing of recording in a tudio environment Typical tudio application with DAT Only recently ha it become poible to ue le expenive DAT recorder for direct recording from analog ource with a ampling rate of 44 1 khz Mot conumer-level DAT recorder, however, record at 48 khz Uually, uch recording have to be tranferred via an analog connection from DAT to a profeional recorder Thi proce reult in an unneceary deterioration of the original quality of the material due to the additional D/A and A/D converter involved With the ULTRAMATCH PRO you can eliminate thi problem by converting the ampling rate purely in the digital domain, which allow for a coniderably higher quality than you could achieve with analog converter Further problem, uch a incorrect format, ignificantly deviating or untable ampling rate (a long a they do not deviate by more than ±12 5% from the current ampling rate), will alo be corrected by the ULTRAMATCH PRO in real time, thu enuring the ucceful tranfer of your audio data Hard-dik recording Hard-dik recording application alo require a uniform ampling rate, if poible the one ued by the ubequent playback medium (CD) A it can convert audio material from 32, 48, 88 2 or 96 khz to the tandard 44 1 khz, the ULTRAMATCH PRO make ure that all ource can be ued to feed audio material by way of a digital connection Of coure, the ULTRAMATCH PRO can be inerted at any point in the audio proceing path, i e alo between the PC and the DAT recorder Therefore, with uncritical audio material you can proce the material at 32 khz in the recording ytem (or higher, depending on which ampling rate can be proceed by the HD recording ytem), and ubequently convert the completely edited material while tranferring it to a DAT recorder at 44 1 khz (or even at 48 khz) Mater/lave problem olver When a digital mixing conole i ued, it i at thi point if not earlier that mater/lave problem will be encountered The explanation i imple: When uing CD player, DAT recorder and HD recording ytem in their normal application, the reponibilitie are clearly defined The playback device i the mater, the recording device i the lave, i e the CD player provide a clock rate of 44 1 khz to which the DAT recorder i ynchronized When uing a mixing conole, the CD player i the mater, the conole i the lave However, thi model collape all of a udden a oon a a DAT recorder i hooked up, which doe not record but play back too The conole can ynchronize to one ource only, the audio data from the other ource would be proceed incorrectly becaue the two device are not in ync The need for ynchronization in a digital tudio i done jutice connecting the equipment to one central ync ource For example, the conole could be the mater-upplying the remaining equipment with a reference ignal (wordclock) However, thi will only work if your other equipment ha a ync input, i e can be ued a a lave In a tudio with a digital tape machine, digital effect and hard-dik recording ytem it i impoible to connect commercially available CD player or DAT recorder to the mixing ection of the conole imply becaue they cannot be ynchronized By inerting the BEHRINGER ULTRAMATCH PRO SRC2496 between the equipment to be ynchronized and the mixing conole input, the SRC2496 can deliver the audio ignal with the tudio clock rate entered via the external ync input (WORDCLOCK, ) In thi cae, the ULTRAMATCH PRO work a intermediate gear of ort, whoe toothed tranmiion alway enure that there i an appropriate gap in the gearwheel It ynchronize the ignal coming from the device to be ynchronized, while converting to the deired ampling rate in compliance with the wordclock ignal In a tudio with a central clock generator, it i therefore poible to ue the ULTRAMATCH PRO to connect any unit to any other, regardle of any other option available + Even if the central clock doe not correpond exactly to one of the ampling rate, the ULTRAMATCH PRO will aign a correponding marker to the output ignal! Thi marker depend on the automatically detected and diplayed ampling rate, which i important becaue DAT recorder uually refue to enter record mode if an incorrect ampling rate ha been indicated Bridging unformatted paage DAT recorder, in particular, produce tiny format gap between individual recorded paage on the tape when intermittent recording are made Alo, when you tranfer older recording it can happen that hort paage with a different ampling rate than that of the current recording remain tored on tape In uch cae, the ULTRAMATCH PRO convert thi hot of ingle piece of information into a continuou data tream with a fixed ampling rate Even if the DAT recorder or any other digital ource i topped or witched off, the ULTRAMATCH PRO will continue to generate a continuou ignal (depending on the digital ignal, if ynchronized to it) 3 3 Removing copy protect information The original copy protect mechanim ued in DAT recorder wa imple but effective: It wa impoible to make digital recording from a CD Later, a tep-by-tep mechanim wa introduced with SCMS, which allowed at leat for one digital copy from CD The routine implemented in SCMS depend on the generation (x th copy) and the origin (category) of the digital audio material In profeional tudio engineering a copy protect mechanim doe not make any ene, which i why there i none defined in the AES/EBU tandard Since many tudio ue inexpenive conumer device for cot reaon, copy protect and/or format incompatibility problem (profeional/conumer) are encountered frequently The SRC2496 can ignore all type of copy protect information and generate a new, completely free marker that allow for multiple copying Thu, you can ue your ULTRAMATCH PRO to copy material from one conumer DAT to another Further information on thi ubject can be found in chapter 2 1 3, ection 3 4 Noie reduction with emphai A very pecial feature i the option to influence the et emphai bit Emphai here mean a noie reduction proce with a treble boot tep involved prior to recording Thi treble boot i undone during playback A pecific bit (emphai bit) in the digital data tream contain the information whether or not 10 3 APPLICATIONS

the ignal ha been proceed with thi technique It i however NOT a modification of the audio ignal, but only of the emphai marker contained in the digital data tream So much for the theory In practice, a lit EMPHASIS LED doe not necearily how that the emphai function ha really been applied In everal ituation the emphai bit wa et during the matering and editing proce due to defective hardware/ oftware without any treble boot applied Thi error uually remain undetected when the material i tranferred, becaue modern DAT recorder no longer have an emphai indicator for reaon of rationalization When the mater tape uually only monitored briefly on the DAT recorder due to lack of time arrive at the cutomer end, it give him a big urprie: The treble range ha been cut in the DAT recorder by more than 10 db, which cannot be undone and reult in a dull ound that lack brilliance in the treble range It i for thi reaon that we equipped the ULTRAMATCH PRO both with an emphai tatu LED and with an additional witch for manual correction of the emphai bit etting 3 5 Line booter, ignal refreher Longer cable length or the ue of a digital patchbay lead to deterioration of ignal quality, which may reult in a higher noie floor or even connection failure Uing pecial input circuitry your ULTRAMATCH PRO remove jitter, interference and level lo, thu retoring the ignal to perfect quality A a conequence, you can alo ue the SRC2496 to refreh the ignal over longer cable length or to retore attenuated and ditorted ignal 3 6 Correcting incorrect ample rate The ample rate of any equipment i ubject to fluctuation due to temperature and ageing effect Normally, an automatic locking circuit enure reliable operation even with varying or lightly fluctuating clock ignal If uch fluctuation exceed a certain level, however, the receiving equipment cannot be ynchronized any longer to the clock rate upplied and therefore fail to function properly Your ULTRAMATCH PRO i totally free from uch retriction, a it work over the entire bandwidth from 31 to 100 khz, rather than only within a mall range around the actual ampling rate The ignal output by the SRC2496 i alway ynchronized correctly to the value elected Thu, you can ue your ULTRAMATCH PRO to recue and work with ampling rate that have been modified deliberately (vari-pitch function on ampling keyboard or CD player) or fail to fall within the adjuted range due to rate fluctuation 3 7 Vari-peed application There are everal reaon for modifying the peed of a digital playback, e g to change the pitch or ynchronize the playback to other equipment In uch cae, the ULTRAMATCH PRO can track the ampling rate a it change and then output the ignal with a fixed rate of 44 1 khz (or any other electable or wordclockdefined value) Thu, it reliably remove ampling rate fluctuation, which could otherwie make it impoible to proce the digital audio material any further in the digital domain + At it digital input, the ULTRAMATCH PRO accept ampling rate fluctuation of up to ±12% from the adjuted ampling rate, without producing any ditortion at it output When thing get wore, the connection will not be interrupted, but temporary drop in the ignal quality (ditortion) may occur 3 8 Format converter Digital data tranfer i frequently affected by problem with the format required While ome device pecifically need S/PDIF ignal on the input ide, other can only output AES/EBU With the SRC2496 thi problem i now hitory The input of your ULTRAMATCH PRO readily accept any tandard ued today On the output ide, you can elect either AES/EBU or S/PDIF, o that it i jut a matter of one key pre to realize the ucceful tranfer of your audio material 3 9 Format interface Many CD player have no coaxial but only an optical output Some DAT recorder, on the other hand, only have a coaxial input Digital interface card for peronal computer are uually equipped either with optical or coaxial connector So, when you try to tranfer data from one unit to another you are likely to encounter incompatibility problem, in that one unit ha an optical connector, while the other ha a coaxial RCA connector Connection to profeional equipment i difficult becaue of the XLR connector ued there, or even impoible if it feature optical interface Such incompatibilitie between input and output are definitely a thing of the pat with the ULTRAMATCH PRO For example, if the CD player only ha an optical digital output, while the DAT recorder i equipped with a coaxial RCA input, your SRC2496 will eaily eliminate the reulting connection problem with it three input and output in all format Your ULTRAMATCH PRO allow for interconnecting virtually all equipment that i available on the market today! 3 10 Patchbay/plitter The digital output of your ULTRAMATCH PRO can all be operated at the ame time In thi cae, the input elector function a a kind of miniature patchbay determining which ignal i ent to the output It i not neceary to witch-over the output, becaue you can freely elect on the down-tream device which ignal to accept (example: recording active/inactive) Therefore, the output of the ULTRAMATCH PRO carry the identical ignal all the time and are operative imultaneouly The parallel operation of all three output enable you to ue your SRC2496 a a plitter, which i ueful for copying material to everal DAT recorder With ome pecial type of equipment in particular that doe not allow for looping through the digital data from the input to the output, thi ueful function make it poible to plit up the ignal 4 TECHNICAL BACKGROUND 4 1 A hort digreion into digital ample rate converion In the pat, the converion of variou ample rate into a fixed value neceitated a whole rack full of component and even then had ome diadvantage that could be meaured a increaed noie, ditortion or undeirable mirror frequencie (high-frequency chirping) On the other hand, the ampling rate converter chip intalled in the ULTRAMATCH PRO convert in real time and with 24-bit preciion It proceing i abolutely inaudible and can only be identified with tate-of-the-art, extremely expenive meauring intrument The functional principle i difficult to comprehend, even for profeional That i why we are preenting you with an equivalent model, which decribe the procee taking place in the proceor in an eaily undertandable manner The proceor carrie out an overampling at the input ignal Between each ample, more ample are inerted, thereby ignificantly increaing the number of ampling point by filling in the gap Subequently, the ignal pae through a variable low-pa filter, which enure that the correct limit, below which no problem with mirror frequencie (aliaing) occur, i oberved Then, the number of ampling point i ditributed in uch a way a to obtain the deired ampling rate at the output Thi enormou overampling allow the SRC proceor to achieve excellent preciion in the complete converion range Moreover, it alo imultaneouly eliminate any jitter preent in the input ignal 4 TECHNICAL BACKGROUND 11

There i no doubt that digital ignal proceing guarantee the lowet ditortion and noie value However, up until now ignal converion, pecifically ampling rate converion, had partially led to coniderable ditortion and interference: If you tried to ue traditional method, the incoming data quantity would far exceed any hardware capacity If data wa put into maller piece to avoid torage problem, the neceary turnaround time would prevent any practical application Therefore, programmer continue to experiment with the mot varied of algorithm, ending up, however, alway having to make a compromie between computation effort and ound quality By proceing data in real time, the proceor ued in the BEHRINGER ULTRAMATCH PRO can proce incredible amount of data The noie and interference floor i thu below -117 dbfs, and the ditortion value, even with difficult input ignal, are below -104 dbfs The ULTRAMATCH PRO remain practically inaudible a uch value are not normally achieved either by the A/D or the D/A converter, and certainly not by the CD a the final product 4 2 AES/EBU and S/PDIF tandard In principle there are two tandard, the mot important electrical characteritic of which can be een in tab 4 1 AES/EBU i the profeional, balanced connection via XLR connector Thi interface i baed on two identical protocol publihed in November 1985 (EBU Tech 3250-E) by the European Broadcat Union and in December 1985 by the Audio Engineering Society (AES3-1985) Sony and Philip oriented themelve to thi tandard and developed a further interface with unbalanced ignal routing and a few other major difference, predominantly related to the aignment of the channel tatu bit Thi interface, named after the two companie and known a S/PDIF (Sony/ Philip Digital Interface), ue either RCA connector or optical connection with optical fiber cable The procedure, tandardized in IEC 958, made a name for itelf mainly due to effort to introduce a copy protect technique Thi tandard alo decribe the revied AES/EBU interface, which wa adapted to the S/PDIF format and named IEC 958 I (profeional) The name of the S/PDIF interface i then IEC 958 II (conumer) Your ULTRAMATCH PRO ue the latet verion of each of the tandard, AES/EBU (AES3), IEC and EIAJ CP-1201 (Japanee tandard) AES/EBU IEC 958 II (S/PDIF) Connection XLR RCA/optical Mode Balanced Unbalanced Impedance 110 Ohm 75 Ohm Level 0,2 V to 5 Vpp 0,2 V to 0,5 V pp Clock accuracy Not pecified I: ± 50 ppm II: 0,1 % III: Variable pitch Jitter ± 20 n Not pecified Tab 4 1: Important data for AES and IEC 958 II pecification Table 4 2 illutrate part of the tructure of the profeional format, a it would normally be ued with AES/EBU connection Byte Bit P/C Audio Emphai Locked Sampl. freq. 1 Channel mode Ue of uer bit 2 Ue of AUX bit Sample length Reerved 3 Reerved for decription of multichannel recording 4 5 Audio ref. Reerved Tab 4 3: Marker in conumer format IEC 958 II (S/PDIF) The firt bit already define whether the following bit are to be undertood a profeional or conumer-format bit A hown, the audio information can be found at the ame poition in the data tream, in principle making both format compatible There are, however, information block that differ in both norm If a piece of equipment, uch a a commercially available DAT recorder, ha only one S/PDIF input, the equipment will uually undertand that format only It will thu uually top when upplied with profeional-format data The reaon i imple: a hown in the illutration, proceing a profeionally-coded ignal with equipment that can only undertand conumer format can lead to malfunction relating to the copy protect bit and the emphai! However, thi point i not alway readily evident, a i the cae with plug-and-ocket connector (e g 1/4" TRS connector, mini-jack and pecial adapter for Sub-D intead of XLR connector) A lot of equipment ha no top function while other equipment can undertand both format depite having only one type of connector In all of thee cae uing the ULTRAMATCH PRO a the ultimate problem olver will oon pay off Virtually, all common digital ignal it receive at the input appear at the output with new, clean marker in the repective choen format 5 INSTALLATION 5 1 General connection note The ULTRAMATCH PRO digital input and output connection are hort-circuit-proof and tranformer-balanced Thi rule out any poibility of ground loop caued by additional ground connection, even when uing the RCA connector Furthermore, the completely potential-free concept of the digital connector allow for uing adapter in order to, e g route the RCA connector ignal to the XLR input of another piece of equipment Unlike digital connector, analog connector are not galvanically eparated, but have a balanced deign and are thu unproblematic in regard to ground loop 5 2 Analog input and output In order to give your audio ignal the bet poible protection from electromagnetic interference, the ULTRAMATCH PRO ha balanced XLR input and output A previouly decribed, the level at the analog input can be adjuted with the GAIN control The output operate at tudio level (+4 dbu) Pleae ee the following illutration for the pin aignment of the connector Of coure, it i alo poible to end ignal to the SRC2496 from unbalanced output (e g ound card or mixing conole output) in order to further proce them in digitized form Receiving analog ignal (e g when uing a high-end D/A converter between a CD-Player and amplifier) from the ULTRAMATCH PRO via unbalanced connector (e g hi-fi amplifier or tape recorder) i not a problem, too Tab 4 2: Marker in profeional format (AES/EBU) 12 5 INSTALLATION

+ When uing the XLR connector in an unbalanced configuration, pin 1 and 3 on the connector inerted mut be interconnected! ULTRAMATCH PRO SRC2496 PRO RCA connector to the XLR input of another unit, depend on the enitivity of the XLR input in quetion The following figure illutrate the correct connection for unbalanced input and output connection via RCA plug Fig 5 1: Unbalanced tranmiion to the ULTRAMATCH PRO Fig 5 4: Connecting the ULTRAMATCH PRO in an unbalanced configuration Baically, it i the ame wiring cheme a i the norm for unbalanced audio connection in hi-fi ytem, e g between a CD player and amplifier For ditance le than 10 m, tandard coaxial line cable ha no negative influence However, hould greater ditance be involved, you hould ue XLR Fig 5 2: Unbalanced tranmiion from the ULTRAMATCH PRO 5 3 Digital input and output Balanced XLR connection The digital XLR input and output are not bound by the AES/EBU protocol They accept and deliver data tream in both the profeional and the conumer format Should the RCA input already be occupied by another device, it i even poible to connect the RCA output of, ay, a CD player to the ULTRAMATCH PRO XLR input by uing an adapter To do thi, you will need a cable uch a the one hown in fig 5 2, except that intead of a female XLR connector, a plug mut be mounted The following figure illutrate how to correctly connect the balanced input and output connector Baically, it i the ame wiring cheme normally ued for balanced audio connection uch a, for example, the connection between a microphone and a mixing conole Optical connection Tolink optical input and output are alo not bound by the S/PDIF format They accept and deliver data tream in both the profeional and the conumer format Optical connection are by nature not enitive to electric interference field, eay to cable and atonihingly robut The following figure illutrate how to correctly connect the optical input and output connection Fig 5 5: Connecting the ULTRAMATCH PRO optically via Tolink + For many conumer device the conumer format at the optical input i an abolute neceity, otherwie they do not accept the ignal + The ULTRAMATCH PRO doe not upport the ADAT multi-track format, which can thu neither be looped through nor converted (ADAT i a regitered trademark of the Alei Corporation) Fig 5 3: Connecting the ULTRAMATCH PRO in a balanced configuration Selecting the correct cable i not critical For ditance of le than 20 m, generally available microphone cable have no negative effect For greater ditance or higher requirement (mobile operation, powerful high-frequency field), however, you hould ue pecial 110-Ohm cable with double hielding Unbalanced coaxial RCA connection The RCA input and output, in turn, are not bound to the S/PDIF format They accept and deliver data tream in both the profeional and the conumer format It i even poible to connect the XLR output (e g from the BEHRINGER ULTRA-CURVE PRO DSP8024 or other equipment) to the RCA input on the ULTRAMATCH PRO by uing an adapter Whether or not the revere will work, namely connecting the ULTRAMATCH Wordclock Feeding a wordclock ignal into the rear BNC connector enable external ynchronization of the ULTRAMATCH PRO Wordclock ignal are normally ditributed in a network configuration, i e are relayed and terminated with 75-Ohm coaxial cable, BNC-T adapter and terminating reitor Commercially available BNC cable are uually ued a connecting cable In order to offer maximum flexibility, the ULTRAMATCH PRO BNC input ha a high-impedance deign and i not equipped with an internal 75-Ohm terminating reitor Should the ULTRAMATCH PRO be the lat device in the ignal chain, however, it i neceary to put a T-connector into the BNC connector A 75-Ohm terminating reitor (in the form of a hort BNC plug) goe on one end of the T-connector and the BNC cable from the mater delivering the wordclock ignal on the other end 5 INSTALLATION 13
