4 THE BRIGHTSTAR CREDIT UNION LOGO Usage of the logo with Photos Acceptable 4-color The placement of the logo should be in an area of the photograph where there are no distracting patterns or elements. Acceptable 1-color The placement of the logo should be in an area of the photograph where there are no distracting patterns or elements. Unacceptable 4-color When using the logo over a 4-color photograph, it is unacceptable to place the logo over an area of the photograph where there are distracting patterns or elements. Unacceptable 1-color When using the logo over a 1-color photograph, it is unacceptable to place the logo over an area of the photograph where there are distracting patterns or elements. 5 DESIGN SYSTEM COMPONENTS Size Requirements Signature Clear Area Clear area around for print and electronic media Always maintain an imaginary area of uninterrupted space (i.e., a buffer zone) around the entire logotype. The minimum boundary would be offset from the logotype on all sides by a distance not less than the height of the B in BrightStar. This boundary includes proximity to edges of a page,too. The height of the capital B is the minimum distance of uninterrupted boundary that must surround the entire logotype. Clear area around for signs, banners, etc. Minimum Size Requirement Don t make the logotype too small. 9 DO S & DON TS The best way for us to build a strong brand in the community is to be consistent. If we don t use our name and logo correctly, it will lessen the value of our brand over time. As a result, we ve developed a list of Do s and Don ts. From time to time, Marketing may approve exceptions to these rules. DON TS DON T separate Bright from Star in your letters, memos, s, etc. The correct full name, BrightStar Credit Union, is three words. BrightStar is one word. The B in Bright, the S in Star, the C in Credit and the U in Union should all be capitalized. Although the words Credit Union appear in all caps in our logo, when writing letters, memos, s, etc., the words Credit Union should not appear in all caps. Wrong: Come down to join Bright Star Credit Union. Wrong: Come down to join BrightStar CREDIT UNION. Correct: Come down to join BrightStar Credit Union. DON T use the acronyms, initials or abbreviations to represent the Credit Union. Wrong: Thank you for calling BSCU. Wrong: BSCU was established in There are three (and only three) areas where using BSCU is acceptable: 1. Our web site address (BSCU.org), 2. Our addresses (joe@bscu.org), and 3. Our published phone numbers ( BSCU or BSCU). DON T use the BrightStar logo as a typewritten word. Visit your nearest branch to apply for a loan. Copyright 2004 BrightStar Credit Union 9
10 DO S & DON TS DON T use the Credit Union s name as a verb, adjective or adverb. I BrightStared the letter. It seems like a BrightStared application. The looks BrightStarish. DON T create permutations or sub-brands of the name without Marketing approval. BrightChecking or StarStatement or BrightLoan, etc. DON T truncate or corrupt the proper spelling or capitalization of BrightStar Credit Union. Brightstar, brightstar, Bright-Star, BriteStar, Bright Star, BrightSTAR, BrightStarz, RightStar, etc. DON T attempt to re-invent the logo in a word processor or graphics program. BrightStar CREDIT UNION BrightStar CREDIT UNION DON T attempt to animate, caricaturize, shadow, rearrange, or otherwise alter the logo. DON T separate the star from the lettering without prior approval from Marketing. Similarly, do not create or use any type of star imagery on any Credit Union materials without prior approval from Marketing. DON T stretch or compress the logo. 11 DO S & DON TS DON T move or scale the elements of the logo closer, farther, smaller or larger in relationship to one another. (Marketing may approve some exceptions to this.) DON T make the logo too small. The logo should be large enough so that the words, CREDIT UNION can be clearly and easily read. See page 8. DON T remove the words Credit Union from the logo. Marketing may approve exceptions. DON T surround the logo with a shape or incorporate it into another piece of artwork or logo. Never use our logo to imply endorsement of an unrelated product, service or organization without prior approval from Marketing. DON T include a registration mark ( ) on or near the logo. The logo is NOT a registered trademark at this time. (Once the logo becomes registered, the registration mark will be required.) DON T attempt to use a low resolution reproduction of our logo (one that is fuzzy or has jagged edges, etc.) DON T use unapproved colors. Don t substitute any one of the colors, nor change the overall color. If the colors cannot reproduce accurately (for example, from a desktop printer), then use an approved black and white version of the logo. Copyright 2004 BrightStar Credit Union 11
12 DO S & DON TS DON T place the color version of the logo over a background color which absorbs, overtakes or conflicts with elements of the logo or otherwise makes the logo hard to read. DON T try to paint things, either figuratively or literally, with our colors. Your branches (blinds, rugs, walls, trim, etc.) do not have to be the same colors as our logo. DO S DO always maintain the sharpest resolution when using the logo. One exception is monogramming or embroidery because sewing threads have limitations in reproducing images. DO feel free to shorten the name in some situations, such as when you write a letter, , memo, article, etc. using the following rules: On first reference you must spell out the full name of the Credit Union (BrightStar Credit Union). On second and subsequent references (once you have mentioned the full name in the text of your letter) you may choose to shorten the name to BrightStar CU or the Credit Union. It is also acceptable to continue to use the full name throughout your text. Using the acronym BSCU is not acceptable, except when referring to our web site address (BSCU.org), our addresses (joe@bscu.org), or our published phone numbers ( BSCU or BSCU). Note on capitalization of the words credit union : The words credit union should be capitalized when referring to a specific credit union. When referring to credit unions in a general sense, it does not need to be capitalized. BrightStar Credit Union offers FREE Online Banking. If you lose your checkbook, be sure to contact the Credit Union. Most credit unions offer debit cards. DO type our web site URL correctly. For details on this, see the design system components section of these standards. If you need to make a sign or banner and cannot represent our logo correctly then DO simply set the name in a basic san serif typeface such as Frutiger, Arial or Helvetica. BrightStar Credit Union DO use only star shapes that either a) approximate the shape of our logo star or b) approximate the shape of a regular 5-point star when ordering merchandise or giveaway items that are shaped like a star. DON T order merchandise that is based on a different shape of star. DO use the correct formatting for letter, memos, faxes and s.
