2 Probus Northshore Newsletter June 2013 Page 2 Hi everyone. I do not know where the time is going. We are now almost in June and hopefully our gardens are completed now. We were very pleased with how the May Day Extravaganza went. I hope everybody enjoyed themselves. We certainly received many accolades, and basically the only criticism was the poor sound balance of the key note speaker s mike, which we hope we got corrected to everyone s satisfaction. I have some information on the new name badges displayed by Port Hope They look quite unique and I look forward to passing on the info to you all. I have had several requests to do so. Our luncheon at Grafton Inn, organized by the Harrisons, was very well attended and also very smoothly run, with Grafton s usual excellent food. (pictures on pages 4&5) At this time I would like to give a big thanks to everyone in the club who is helping with the organizing and planning of all the events. We have had some excellent speakers, and our organization never seems to run out of fun activities to enjoy. We are indeed lucky. If we did not have all this help, there would not be the fun activities. Thanks everyone, and have a lovely summer. Perhaps soon it will be warm enough that we can take off our jackets. 3 Probus Northshore Newsletter June 2013 Page 3 E-Books and Audiobooks Charmaine Lindsay received her BA (Honors) in Major English Literature from Queens University. She obtained her Masters of Library Science from U of T; then from George Brown College she earned a certificate in Archives Management; she is also a graduate of Advancing Public Library Leadership program of the Southern Ontario Library Service. All her achievements in studies have served her well throughout her 29 year career in library administrative and supervisory postions. Charmaine is a librarian with a strong community focus. She espouses provision for enhancing access to technology and the training needed to do so for the library s cardholders. She believes that libraries play a vital role in creating socially cohesive communities by engaging a wide diversity of groups such as children, youth, students, small businesses and seniors. The purpose of her visit to our Probus community was to explain to us of the newest technology available in the Cobourg Public Library and to encourage us to use e-books and Audiobooks. Charmaine explained how easy it is to download e-books and Audiobooks to a computer, MP3 Player, I Pod or I-Pad from the Library s system, OVERDRIVE. Available e-book titles number 28,000; available audiobook titles number 10,000! These electronic books are free with your library card; the same books cost the reader money if downloaded from Amazon.ca or any other book merchant site. Charmaine s well organized powerpoint presentation indicated just how easy it is to borrow an e-book or audiobook from the Cobourg Public Library. Our librarians are so eager to help us borrow an electronic book through their on-line services, they actually provide workshops(named Doughnuts and Downloads ) twice per week to guide the card holders through the method from the first click on the mouse to the moment the chosen title pops up on your screen! History? Music? Cooking? Gardening? Dictionaries? Modern Fiction or Classics? Travel? They are all waiting for you! They park in the driveway, move a few steps, turn around just to have another look. It s the machine s lines, sleek, smooth, the metal strong to the touch. And when driving, the wheel in his hands, its power ready, at his command, an open road to dominate, time the real challenge. Bill King must be a car guy. But his fascination is hardly with the ordinary. It is Ferrari that creation of the 1950 s when Ferrari and Maserati vied for attention when speed and style were of equal importance and Italy ruled both. You don t have to be a car guy to love the design. Check it out for yourself on the internet. It s easy to appreciate Bill s hobby. A Ferrari of any age is just that kind of car. 7 Probus Northshore Newsletter June 2013 Page 7 The Northshore Wellness Show and Tellers Here is a proposal for the formation of a group of people who like to read about recently published research on nutrition and other health related issues. The published research we will be interested in is mainly that which is scientifically researched and peer reviewed in authoritative journals. This research will be done by teams that are recognized as leaders in their fields. This group will meet infrequently and will maintain communication largely over the internet. It is difficult for any of us to be aware of all good recently published information so this group will be very useful to keep us informed about what good information is out there. Show and Tell describes our function very well because members will not want to be seen as providing advice to people but rather simply as providing information about what literature has been published.
