This method defines print generously. It affords teachers the opportunity to model and celebrate all forms of traditional and emerging technologies. As Masterman (1985) notes, outside of school, the most influential and widely disseminated modes of communication are visual, oral, and/or aural. Even traditional print is coming to be regarded as a visual medium. Layout, design, and typography are widely understood to be a significant part of the total communicating process. It is important for students at all grade levels to read and respond to a wide variety of traditional print and new literacies. Focus on Motivation and Literacy Learning Honor All Print nurtures an appreciation for the value of reading by celebrating the wide variety of interests present in any classroom. In addition to acknowledging interest, Honor All Print promotes the concept that a rich reading life is comprised of all types of text: fiction, nonfiction, newspapers, magazines, Web-based material, and so on. And finally, Honor All Print provides teachers with the opportunity to model reading and responding to a variety of print for a variety of purposes. How It Works 1 Begin by surveying the reading interests of your students using the Honor All Print Survey (Form G at the end of Part Five of this book). However, view the survey results as a discussion starter. Reading and text interest change over time. 79

2 PROMOTING THE VALUE OF READING 2 Hold small-group conferences to discuss the survey responses. Encourage children to elaborate on their responses. Having children discuss the survey in small groups might prompt children to share additional interests. 3 During read-aloud or Book Blessing (see Chapter 1), share a variety of print about topics of interest in your class. In addition to sharing the text, use the opportunity to briefly discuss the type of print being honored. Explain the type of print, the purpose for reading it, and how it might be read. See Figures 22.1 and 22.2 for examples. A blank version you can use is found in Form Extension References Honor All Print can be used to model a wide variety of desirable reading practices including credible sources. This method can also be a way to broaden student interest. You could make public an Honor All Print display about a topic students have not identified as an interest. See an example of such a display below. And finally, an Honor All Print bulletin board can be arranged. Such a display celebrates the wide variety of print being read by everyone in the class and can serve to nurture new interests.
