1 FREE Professional Development Workshops Saturday, March 5, 2016 and Saturday, March 19, 2016
2 MAY 9, 2016 JUNE 12, 2016 Oglebay Institute Mansion Museum - Oglebay Resort - Wheeling, WV Published in 1623, Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies now known as the First Folio saved for posterity 18 of Shakespeare s 38 plays, including "The Tempest," "Macbeth," "Twelfth Night" and "As You Like It." Around 230 original copies of the nearly 400-year old publication are known to exist. One of these copies will be on exhibit at the Oglebay Institute Mansion Museum, providing visitors with a rare, oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to view this important book in their own community. For many visitors, this will be their first and perhaps only opportunity to see this rare and influential book in person; for some it may be their introduction to the power of Shakespeare's words. The exhibition accompanying the First Folio tells a two-part story. The first is about the First Folio as an object: its history, cultural significance, and continued relevance. The second is about Shakespeare's plays: a widely read set of texts, beloved for their timeless themes of our shared humanity. The displayed First Folio will be opened to the "to be or not to be" soliloquy from Shakespeare's Hamlet --- among the most famous and most quoted words ever written. The Folger Shakespeare Library has prepared the plans and materials for The First Folio Teaches Teachers: Shakespeare s Text Demystified, free professional development programs offered in conjunction with the exhibition. There are two different workshops from which to choose. Both are active, and have a language focus. The workshops include deep knowledge content for the teacher and activities that can be implemented in the classroom. All of these activities are tied to the Common Core State Standards. The two-hour workshop focuses almost entirely on the First Folio. The first half of the four-hour workshop is focused on the First Folio, and the second half includes a number of ways to meaningfully connect teachers and students with Shakespeare s language. Choose from the following: Location: 2-HOUR SESSION - SATURDAY, MARCH 5, 2016, 10AM-NOON 4-HOUR SESSION - SATURDAY, MARCH 5, AM-2:30PM 2-HOUR SESSION - SATURDAY, MARCH 19, 2016, 10AM-NOON 4-HOUR SESSION SATURDAY, MARCH 19, AM-2:30PM OPTIONAL BOX LUNCH $10 Oglebay Institute Mansion Museum Rt 88, Oglebay Resort, Wheeling, WV
