1 Dr. Seuss Properties TM & 2006 Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. All Rights Reserved. Join in the 10th annual NEA s Read Across America Day! This nationwide literacy event will take place on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the man who epitomizes reading fun! This year is extra special as we also celebrate the 50th birthday of THE CAT IN THE HAT, a book that continues to capture the imaginations of children everywhere

2 In 1954, many Americans were bemoaning rampant illiteracy in our schools and asking themselves: Why can't Johnny read? In an article in LIFE magazine, Pulitzer Prize winning author, John Hersey maintained that American children couldn't read because their primers were boring and based on flawed pedagogy. Hersey challenged Dr. Seuss to write a story "first graders wouldn't be able to put down." And that's just what Dr. Seuss did, using a vocabulary of only 236 words. In 1957, Random House published THE CAT IN THE HAT, and ever since then, Dr. Seuss has been charming children everywhere into learning how to read. Fifty years later, enormous strides have been made in support of literacy initiatives nationwide, but enormous challenges remain. Ensuring children access to books remains essential to reading development. Studies show that having access to a wide variety of reading materials is essential if a child is to develop into a strong reader. In fact, the only behavioral measure that correlates significantly with reading scores is the number of books in the home. Children who are read to frequently are nearly twice as likely as other children to show three or more skills associated with emerging literacy. Children in poverty are the most at risk. Of the 35.6 million Americans currently living below the poverty line, 40% are children. Children from low-income families enter school at a disadvantage. The gap in reading scores between children from low- and high-income families is more than 40 points. On average, children from low-income families have far fewer literacy and language experiences at home than their classmates. A team of researchers recently concluded that nearly two-thirds of low-income families owned no books for their children. In honor of the 50th birthday of THE CAT IN THE HAT, we invite you to participate in Project 236, a nationwide literacy effort which asks educators, librarians, and other book lovers... WHAT CAN YOU DO to support literacy in your classroom and community? Dr. Seuss Properties TM & 2006 Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. All Rights Reserved. *Sources can be found at

3 236 WORDS HEARD ACROSS AMERICA! Mark your calendar for March 2, 2007, to join in the nationwide read-aloud of THE CAT IN THE HAT Log on to for details. Host an author at your school and have students prepare for the visit by reading the author s books and coming up with a list of questions in advance. Write a readers theater script and have your class act out a scene from a favorite book. Make personal connections by hand-picking books based on each student s interests and reading level. Invite community leaders to be guest speakers in your classroom. Have them discuss how important reading is in their job and their life. Create a Kids Picks display in your classroom where students can display their newest favorites and pick up books that their friends recommended. Have students exchange book recommendations in letter format with pen pals from a neighboring classroom or school. Host a Read-a-Thon or other incentivized reading program in your school. Make yourself available to your students for extra reading help. Also remember to be there for parents who might need help with their own reading. Start a Reading Buddies Program pairing older students with younger students. Turn book reports into book adventures by adding a creative component. For example, have students record a newscast about the book, dress up as one of the characters, or design a board game based on the book. After your class has finished a book, watch the movie version together and lead a discussion comparing and contrasting the book with the movie. Make sure to have popcorn and snacks handy! Have young readers become young authors by binding up their stories into book format and displaying them in the school library. Spice things up in your classroom by challenging students to a book scavenger hunt in the library or an online book WebQuest. Host mock Newbery and Caldecott Award committees and allow your students to vote on their favorite novels and picture books this year. Show your love of reading by recommending new books on your voice mail and on your signature. The ultimate resource for teachers! For bios, teachers guides, classroom clubs, and more! Search over 140 themes and holidays by format and grade level. An innovative program designed to enhance the partnership between teachers and retailers. Bring favorite authors into your classroom via podcast!

5 Grades 5 up Random House hardcover: ( ) Poor Dick and Sally. It s cold and wet and they re stuck in the house with nothing to do... until a giant cat in a hat shows up, transforming the dull day into a madcap adventure and almost wrecking the place in the process! THE CAT IN THE HAT PARTY EDITION Grades PreK 3 Random House hardcover ( X) THE CAT IN THE HAT is fun to read aloud, easy to read alone, and impossible to put down... making it perfect for your classroom! Don t miss this special foil-decked party edition with a free birthday card. How did Dr. Seuss come to write THE CAT IN THE HAT? How long did it take him to write THE CAT IN THE HAT and THE CAT IN THE HAT COMES BACK? Were these books instantly successful, or did their popularity build? The answers to these questions and more can be found in this fascinating illustrated study of two books that changed the way our children learn how to read. According to Professor Nel, author of THE ANNOTATED CAT, THE CAT IN THE HAT and its sequel operate on many levels. The books teach reading, but they also teach about poetry, politics, ethics, comics, history, and even con-artistry! Complete with the text of both books, photographs, draft material, and essays by Seuss, THE ANNOTATED CAT is as much fun as a DVD with all the extras.
