1 Name Hour Decades Research Think of the decade we are living in currently. What moments will stand out in history? What events will people still bring up in conversation in ten or 40 years? The Twin Towers attack? Hurricane Katrina? The war in Iraq? For this assignment, you are going to research infamous moments throughout the previous decades that people at times are still talking about to each other. While you may not have heard of all of them, each one of these events made an impact on the United States and to the memories of its citizens. The steps to complete the research of these moments in history are as follows: 1. To do this assignment you will choose a specific event from the list I have provided to you. 2. You will write a list of focus questions (minimum of 8) about your specific topic. 3. You will go to the computer lab/library and individually research information about your topic. For your research you must: Have a minimum of thee reliable sources, at least one should be a book. (Be careful about websites no Wikipedia or Eddie s Thoughts about World War II Use the snipping tool or split screen method for taking notes. Paraphrase all information to avoid plagiarism; use bullet points; do not take notes in complete sentences. Use MLA format for documenting sources. Remember to copy and paste your source citation to your notes. Write down all book/website information to include later in your bibliography. See the handout included in this packet. Organize your research facts.

2 4. You will make an outline for your research paper using the facts from your online notes. Make sure you include the answers to your focus questions somewhere in your outline. 5. You will then write a research paper about your historical event. This paper must include: A topic paragraph with an interesting introduction and thesis statement. A minimum of three supporting paragraphs. A concluding paragraph with a concluding statement as well as final thoughts about the event. A minimum of FIVE paragraphs with no less than five sentences in each. All important details about the event (your focus questions) should be answered somewhere in your essay. Strong organization to make the paper easily understandable. Transition words to create fluent sentences and paragraphs. Exciting word choice to keep the audience interested in the topic. Correct conventions (grammar/punctuation, spelling, and paragraph structure. 6. You will create a bibliography with correct MLA format of all the resources (mimimum 3) you used for your research. Use Microsoft Office to create a works-cited page. Put Works-Cited at the top of your page. Use microsoft office to create bibliographic citations for the books and websites you use. Copy and paste your other sources to your works-cited page. Put the source citations in alphabetical order and remember to "reverse indent" the 2nd and 3rd lines. 7. You will then write the final draft of your essay. This must be handwritten neatly in blue or black ink and skipping lines or typed (12 pt. font, black ink, Times New Roman, double spaced). Your bibliography, focus questions, outline, and revised rough drafts need to be attached to the final draft. This essay is due on.
