Melbourne; Edition Renard; ***Deluxe Limited Edition of 75 copies within a total edition of 200 numbered copies, and now first published since about All the original editions are of great rarity. No copies of the 2nd or 3rd editions have been recorded and the first (Southampton, 1803) edition is extremely rare, while the 4th (Oxford, 1806), 5th (London, 1809), 5th (i.e. 6th, Cork, undated), and 6th (i.e. 7th, Dublin, also undated), editions are all very rare. The work is of considerable importance as one of the few accounts of Hunter s period as Governor. Hunter was dissatisfied with Bond s behaviour in the colony and complained of him in dispatches. Hunter was instructed to return him to England and Bond left the colony under a cloud in 1800, but his narrative was evidently very popular. He gives an account of the operation of the convict system and the economic corruption in the colony, and describes early efforts to encourage free settlers. He includes also comments on the Aborigines and on the natural history of the colony, including much from firsthand experience. See Ferguson 480; Wantrup, pp #15237 A$110.00

London; T. & W. Boone; ***Ferguson 9461 (collation inaccurate). With the bookplate of the noted historian, politician and collector, Sir William Stirling. Erskine, better known for his Journal of a Cruise among the Islands of the Western Pacific visited Australia in 1851 and wrote this account of the discovery of gold in New South Wales on his passage back to England. He made a personal excursion to the new discoveries, or diggings, as he refers to them at Summer-hill Creek and the Turon River. His dated notes of this journey form the appendix to this volume which commences with a brief account of the earliest discoveries of the 1820s and earlier, and continues with a detailed account of the discoveries from the late 1840s onwards. The map is adapted from Mitchell s map and information from H.M.S. Acheron and drawn up by Captain John Lort Stokes for the Author. This was the first eyewitness account of the goldfields and is particularly rare in this first edition. A second edition was published in 1852; this is also of considerable rarity. #16725 A$

Madrid; I. Boix; ***Ferguson 3697 (2 copies only); Hill 2, 1157; Not in Sabin; O Reilly-Reitmann 1039; Forbes Michelena y Rojas was a native of Venezuela and his narrative was printed in Spain for publication in Venezuela by subscription. Ferguson notes erroneously that this work contains accounts of all seven voyages made by the author, but in fact the entire work (apart from a brief note in the Preface) concerns his sixth and most important voyage, one of the rarest and leastknown voyages to the Pacific. Departing from Mazatlan, Mexico, Michelena y Rojas crossed the Pacific in the years , spending some 33 days exploring the Hawaiian Islands (to which he devotes 4 chapters, including portraits of Kamehameha III and Governor John Adams). From there he sailed to Tahiti, Rotuma and via Norfolk Island to Australia (with a fine plan of Sydney in 1840, a plate of part of the Botanic Gardens and another of the aboriginal inhabitants). He continued to Vanikoro (with an account of Dillon s discovery of the fate of La Perouse), Guam in the Marianas, the Caroline Islands, Philippines, Macao, and Singapore. His route is traced on the folding map and the author includes an account of the Papuans. Some doubt has been cast by Saul H. Riesenberg on the authenticity of the narrative but it seems clear that it is an amalgam of personal observation and information from other contemporary sources. Michelena also published (1837) the official account of the Venezuelan exploring expedition up the Orinoco and down the Amazon Rivers, and later wrote a history of South American exploration published in #34806 A$12,500.00
