15 15 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number and bibliographical information on this work are hard to come by, however we believe this set to be quite complete. The first two volumes were first published in 1698 (see Sabin 18381). These volumes did not contain the second part of the present Volume II (Traite des Ventes - see Sabin 18384) and Sabin (in his 18381) refers to a second edition of the two volumes in the same year (1698) presumably of similar configuration to the first. Sabin also refers to a third volume ( Suplement...) and a fourth ( Voyage... aux Terres Australes ) both published in MDCCXI (1711), but these are clearly reprints of the volumes here present (1701 and 1705 respectively). Part II to the present Volume II, with its separate title-page, is the first appearance in French of the Treatise on the Winds and clearly was intended to be bound with Part I (as indicated by the catchword on the last page of adverts. to Part I). Sabin s refers to several editions in a rather confused and unsatisfactory manner, which may in effect include the present collection. In summary this is a fine set of the first complete edition in French, volumes III, IV and V being the first editions in French, and Volumes I and II being the first complete (augmented) editions; a rare and desirable collection, seldom encountered. #26377 A$13,500.00

21 21 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number Frost, Alan. THE PRECARIOUS LIFE OF JAMES MARIO MATRA. Voyager with Cook. American Loyalist. Servant of Empire. With the assistance of Isabel Moutinho. Med. 8vo, First Edition; pp. xiv, 266(last blank); 12 plates (including several maps), notes, sources, bibliog., index; original canvas; (a corner bumped, o/wise a fine copy in d/w.). (Carlton, Melbourne); The Miegunyah Press; (1995). ***Number Six in the second numbered Miegunyah Press series: 1000 copies were printed. Using his letters and a probing biographical narrative, Frost builds up a picture of Matra, an important, but little-known figure in Australian history. An enigmatic American who sailed with Cook, Matra (who changed his name from Magra) was the first (in 1771) to have published a major book on the Endeavour voyage, and strove to found a colony in New South Wales for dispossessed American loyalists, only to end his days as Consul at Tangier. #48600 A$65.00

22 22 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number Grant, James. THE NARRATIVE OF A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY, performed in His Majesty s Vessel the Lady Nelson, of Sixty Tons Burthen, with Sliding Keels, in the Years 1800, 1801, and 1802, to New South Wales. By James Grant, Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Including Remarks on the Cape de Verd Islands, Cape of Good Hope, the hitherto Unknown Parts of New Holland, discovered by him in his Passage (the first ever attempted from Europe) through the Streight separating that Island from the land discovered by Van Dieman [sic]: Together with Various Details of his Interviews with the Natives of New South Wales; Observations on the Soil, Natural Productions, &c. not known or very slightly treated of by former Navigators; with his Voyage home in the Brig Anna Josepha round Cape Horn; and an Account of the Present State of the Falkland Islands. To which is prefixed an Account of the Origin of Sliding Keels, and the Advantages resulting from their Use; With an Appendix of Orders, Certificates, and Examinations, relative to the Trial Cutter. The Whole illustrated with elegant Engravigs. London: Printed by C. Roworth, Bell Yard, Fleet Street, for T. Egerton, Military Library, Whitehall Demy 4to, First Edition; pp. [iv](title & dedication, versos blank), [ii] (List of Encouragers), [viii](contents, last Erratum & Directions to the Binder), [v]-xxvi(an Account of the Origin of Sliding Keels), [ii](blank), 196(last blank); large folding plan of the sliding keels, folding chart, 1 col. & 5 b/w. plates, appendix; neatly recased in original papered boards (rebacked, with printed paper label in style similar to original, and free endpapers replaced using contemporary paper; spine ends a little worn); entirely uncut and unopened; an exceptionally fine & clean copy; rare. London; Printed for T. Egerton; ***Ferguson 375; Wantrup 75; Hill, page 126. This copy is complete with the rare List of Encouragers leaf AND the blank leaf d4, neither mentioned by Ferguson, and one or both not present in most copies.

23 23 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number The plates and chart were all engraved by S. I. Neele, 352 Strand and it seems that the work was not in fact published until 1804 as while the coloured plate of the Crested Cockatoo and the plate of the Lady Nelson in the Thames are dated July 1st, 1803 and the chart is dated Dec. 27th 1803, the remaining plates (except that of the sliding keels which is undated) are all dated Jan. 10th Never having been rebound, this copy has the plates all together, before the main text, with the result that the fine coloured plate of the Crested Cockatoo which almost invariably has the text offset across it, is here unmarked and in its original glory. The Lady Nelson was originally sent out for Matthew Flinders use on his circumnavigation of Australia, however he had left the colony by the time she arrived. The voyage included the first navigation of Bass Strait from West to East. The Lady Nelson was an experimental vessel, and her performance was of considerable interest to nautical science. Grant was given commmand rather than the designer Captain Schanck, as it was thought that the experiment would be given a fairer trial. The sliding keels did not, however, make the impact expected in spite of the advantage they presented for surveying in shallow waters. #21808 A$17,500.00

The work is of great importance: Phillip Parker King (the son of Governor Philip Gidley King) was born at Norfolk Island, and became one of Britain s leading hydrographers. His work considerably furthered the geographical knowledge of the Australian coasts. His charts were very accurate and his extensions and additions to those of Flinders on the Northern and Western coasts of Australia were for many years in practical use by the Admiralty (well into the twentieth century). The eight-page appendix is important in its own right, comprising the report of a sealing expedition in the Brig Governor Macquarrie made in 1819: Report of a Voyage from Sydney to Kangaroo Island and of Observations made during a stay of seven months on, and near the island, by Captain Sutherland, who in the year 1819 was employed by some merchants of Sydney to command a vessel of 140 tons, expressly fitted out for the purpose of obtaining a cargo of salt and seal skins from Kangaroo Island.
