1 GASTON RENARD Pty. Ltd. Postal Address: Established 1945 Electronic communications: P.O. Box 1030, (A.C.N ) Telephone: +61 (0) Ivanhoe, Melbourne, ABN: FAX: +61 (0) Victoria, 3079, Australia. Short List No. 25. Australiana Angas, George French. SOUTH AUSTRALIA ILLUSTRATED. Impl. folio, First Edition; pp. [2] (colour-illustrated lithographed title, dated 1846, verso blank), [2](typeset title-page dated 1847, verso blank), [2](calligraphic litho-engraved Dedication to Queen Adelaide, verso blank), [iii]-iv(list of Subscribers), [4](Preface & General Remarks on the Aboriginal Inhabitants of South Australia); 60 superb hand-coloured litho plates, each with facing leaf of descriptive text (Plate 27 with 2 leaves); finely bound in half green morocco with marbled sides, with matching fitted slipcase by Aquarius; (small, unobtrusive stamp of the Zoological Society almost invisibly erased from two early leaves and present on a third; a few leaves with the faintest browning of extreme margins only); an exceptionally fine, unusually clean copy, the colours brilliant & full, with no sign of fading; rare. London; Thomas M Lean; ***A most attractive copy, both externally and internally, and one of the two outstanding substantial collections of early coloured views of Australia (the other being Joseph Lycett s Views in Australia, ), the work contains 41 fine topographical views (on 37 plates), of various parts of South Australia, 19 plates of the Aboriginal inhabitants, their dwellings and artefacts, 3 plates of insects and one of South Australian botany. A new species of Kangaroo is shown on one of the plates. The work is of great importance as a contemporary record of South Australia for, as the Author states in his Preface, With the hope of preserving time and life-like records of men and scenes, so quickly passing away, I have endeavoured by pictorial representation, to describe the most interesting and peculiar features of South Australia and its Aboriginal inhabitants. I have devoted my time and powers entirely to the accomplishment of this task, visiting all portions of the Colony, and making myself conversant with the manners and habits of native tribes whose existence is unknown to the world. The information portrayed on the Aborigines is particularly valuable. Two of the plates are by S. T. Gill - the view of Adelaide and that showing the Departure of Captain Sturt, August 1844, on the Central Australian Expedition - these are particularly fine early views of the city - and have been sold separately for astronomical figures. #14526 A$45,000.00

6 6 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books 11 Bond, George. A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE COLONY OF PORT-JACKSON, in New South Wales; Its Native Inhabitants, Productions, &c. &c. By George Bond. First published by the Author at Southampton in 1803 and reprinted for Him at Oxford, Lond, Cork and Dublin in various Years to about Eighth Edition, faithfully reprinted from the first, incorporating the additions and corrections of the later editions. Edited, with bibliographical notes by Julien Renard. Melbourne: Published by Edition Renard, vo, Limited Edition; pp. [vi], 42(last colophon); sewn in original stiff wrappers, with french fold. Melbourne; Edition Renard; ***Limited Edition of 100 copies within a total edition of 200 numbered copies, and now first published since about All the original editions are of great rarity. No copies of the 2nd or 3rd editions have been recorded and the first (Southampton, 1803) edition is extremely rare, while the 4th (Oxford, 1806), 5th (London, 1809), 5th (i.e. 6th, Cork, undated), and 6th (i.e. 7th, Dublin, also undated), editions are all very rare. The work is of considerable importance as one of the few accounts of Hunter s period as Governor. Hunter was dissatisfied with Bond s behaviour in the colony and complained of him in dispatches. Hunter was instructed to return him to England and Bond left the colony under a cloud in 1800, but his narrative was evidently very popular. He gives an account of the operation of the convict system and the economic corruption in the colony, and describes early efforts to encourage free settlers. He includes also comments on the Aborigines and on the natural history of the colony, including much from first-hand experience. See Ferguson 480; Wantrup, pp #15238 A$ Bradley, William. The journal is penned in a clear and legible hand. Bradley was on the Sirius on her voyage to the Cape of Good Hope for supplies, which went eastwards and around Cape Horn, meeting in these high latitudes the ice islands amongst which they sailed for twenty-eight days. His illustrations include two fine watercolours of these ice islands. He also recounts the wreck of the Sirius at Norfolk Island and the subsequent story of the crew during their eventual return to England on a chartered Dutch vessel. #26219 A$165.00

20 20 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books 40 Jarman, Robert. JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE TO THE SOUTH SEAS, IN THE JAPAN, employed in the Sperm Whale Fishery, under the Command of Capt. John May. By Robert Jarman. First published at Beccles and London in Edited, with an Introduction, Notes, Chronology, and Index, by Robert M. Warneke, and faithfully reprinted from the original. Melbourne: Edition Renard vo, Deluxe Limited New Edition; pp. XII, vi, 242, [243]-318; portrait, introduction, extensive notes, chronology, references and index; fully section-sewn on tapes and hand-bound in original half grey goatskin with black moire cloth sides, top edge dyed, and marker ribbon. Melbourne; Edition Renard; ***Deluxe limited edition of 70 numbered copies within the overall limitation of 200 copies for sale. A new edition of the very rare account first published in two issues in 1838 and until now never reprinted - see Forbes 1104, also Bagnall 2685 and Ferguson 2526 (and 2526a). Robert Jarman, the son of a printer at Beccles, joined the crew as a young man of twenty years on a whaling voyage to the South Seas in During the next three to four years young Robert s forecastle jottings were transformed into a lively and well-crafted tale. The primary theme is the hard, unrelenting search for whales, reflected in Jarman s methodical recording of encounters with other whalers and elaborated with graphic descriptions of the excitements and dangers of whaling with the inevitable accidents, injuries, and tragic deaths. After cruising the Japan Sea, the ship reached the Hawaiian Islands at the end of October 1832 and anchored at Honolulu. The author noted 18 whalers in port. He describes the harbor and the method by which ships were towed in, and the Honolulu Fort, and the town and its native people (Forbes). He tells also of surviving gales and near disaster when the Japan was dismasted in a hurricane, which forced the stricken ship to Sydney for extensive repairs. Jarman gives an interesting account of Sydney, with perceptive comments on convicts and their management and the Aboriginals and their customs including the use of the boomerang. Subsequently the ship cruised around Rotuma, the Fiji Islands and New Zealand before returning to England. Along the way Jarman gives accounts of visits to bays and islands to trade for fresh provisions, and of longer stays at various ports for wood, water and to benefit the crew. A welcome respite from the rigors and grinding repetition of shipboard life, Jarman was obviously captivated by those of the natives who were friendly, and he perceptively and sympathetically described their modes of life, customs, and the effects of European intercourse and colonization. The scope and appeal of this book is enhanced by some lengthy passages on natural history, including observations on the social behaviour of sperm whales and encounters with sharks, other fish and birds. Because of several chance but pertinent events he was able to include commentaries on several dramatic episodes of Pacific maritime history, such as the Bligh mutiny and its aftermath, and recent massacres of ships crews by islanders -- a constant fear for lightly-armed visiting whalers. #27823 A$365.00

During the past sixty years we have examined many copies of this edition, and not one has contained any plates. The British Museum copy, also, is without them. On the other hand, the edition of 1798 (F. 283), which is actually a re-issue of the sheets of the 1795 edition but with a new half-title and title-page, has two plates, which are specified in the title. However, FERGUSON in his description of this issue does not mention the two plates in his collation. We conclude, therefore, that he has confused the two issues, and that his collations require revision. The importance of this translation of WHITE s Journal has consistently been overlooked. The latter part of the Volume (i.e., the 256 pages comprising the Notes du Traducteur ), which exceeds in volume the work of WHITE itself, consists of detailed analysis, comment, criticism and elaboration of WHITE s Journal, relating WHITE s statements to those in the works of PHILLIP and TENCH, and comparing the country generally, the native people and their ways, the flora and fauna, with those of other lands, as recorded by earlier voyagers and observers, both English and French.
