[Etc., Etc., 33 lines, closely set]. The Whole of these Voyages of Capt. James Cook, &c. being Newly written by the Editors from the Authentic Journals of several Principal Officers and other Gentlemen of the most distinguished Naval and Philosophical Abilities, who sailed in the various Ships; and now publishing under the immediate Direction of George William Anderson, Esq. Assisted very materially, by a Principal Officer who sailed in the Resolution Sloop, And by many other Gentlemen of the Royal Navy. AH [monogram] London: Printed for Alex. Hogg, at the Original King s Arms, No. 16, Pater-Noster- Row. Cr. folio; pp. iv, [5]-656(last unnumbered), [4](List of Subscribers); folding chart of the world and 156 full-page charts and plates agreeing exactly with the list at end; full contemporary calf (expertly re-jointed & with minor repairs to extremities; the folding chart with some neat tissue repairs & re-folded; about a dozen plates with neat marginal repairs; all plates & charts with imprints and captions entire with the sole exception of the plate at Page 640 which has the caption just shaved); an unusually good, and quite complete, copy of a book very difficult to obtain in fine, complete condition. London; Printed for Alex. Hogg; N.D. [c. 1786]. ***In addition to Cook s voyages, the work contains (between the accounts of the second and third voyages), accounts of the voyages of Byron (pp ), Wallis (pp ), Carteret (pp ), Phipps (pp ), Anson (pp ) and Drake (pp ). See Beddie 17-19; Hill, pages 5-6 (No. 18 in the second edition); Forbes 61. This copy appears to conform most closely to Beddie 19 and to Forbes 61 State II. The work, first issued or commenced in 1784, was reissued many times over a period of over 20 years and many minor differences are found between copies including the precise wording of the title-page and some variation in the number of listed maps and plates. In addition many copies seem to have been issued (or compiled) without the full complement of illustrations, up to a dozen or so being often lacking. As advertised by the publisher at the foot of Page 655, it was available both in 80 sixpenny parts or as a complete volume bound in full calf. In this copy, the list of illustrations on Page [656] lists 157 charts and plates in total - these are all present and are placed throughout at the appropriate locations (plus or minus a page) with the sole exception of the plate specified for Page 230 which is instead at Page 136. In addition this copy contains the four-page List of Subscribers, rarely present. Beddie 19 refers to a copy with the frontispiece dated 1781, which on first examination appears to be also the case with this copy, but we believe the date is in fact 1784 (as noted by Forbes - State II), with the digit 4 imperfectly printed. #33081 A$

17 16 Bond, George. A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE COLONY OF PORT- JACKSON, in New South Wales; Its Native Inhabitants, Productions, &c. &c. By George Bond. Edited, with bibliographical notes by Julien Renard. Melbourne: Published by Edition Renard, vo, Deluxe Limited Edition; pp. [vi], 42(last colophon); sewn & cased in original papered boards, with printed title-label and translucent dustwrapper. Melbourne; Edition Renard; ***Deluxe Limited Edition of 75 copies within a total edition of 200 numbered copies, and now first published since about All the original editions are of great rarity. No copies of the 2nd or 3rd editions have been recorded and the first (Southampton, 1803) edition is extremely rare, while the 4th (Oxford, 1806), 5th (London, 1809), 5th (i.e. 6th, Cork, undated), and 6th (i.e. 7th, Dublin, also undated), editions are all very rare. The work is of considerable importance as one of the few accounts of Hunter s period as Governor. Hunter was dissatisfied with Bond s behaviour in the colony and complained of him in dispatches. Hunter was instructed to return him to England and Bond left the colony under a cloud in 1800, but his narrative was evidently very popular. He gives an account of the operation of the convict system and the economic corruption in the colony, and describes early efforts to encourage free settlers. He includes also comments on the Aborigines and on the natural history of the colony, including much from firsthand experience. See Ferguson 480; Wantrup, pp #15237 A$110.00

[Amsterdam; N. Israel; 1967]. ***Bibliotheca Australiana No. 12. Not in Spence; Renard 159. This facsimile of the First Edition in English (London, Printed for J. Nourse, 1772) has been out of print for many years. This was the first French circumnavigation and resulted in the French claim to several of the islands of the South Pacific, including Tahiti, the New Hebrides, and the Solomon Islands. Several geographical features in the Pacific are named after Bougainville, as well as the tropical flowering vine Bougainvillea. The primary object of the voyage was to hand over to Spain the Malouines or Falkland Islands (which Bougainville had earlier, in 1763, made an unsuccessful attempt to colonise). He then passed through the Straits of Magellan and crossed the Pacific, visiting the Tuamotu Archipelago, Tahiti (of which there is a long description, including observations of the natives and a vocabulary), the Samoas, the New Hebrides and the Solomon, Louisiade and New Britain Archipelagoes. The expedition was one of the earliest to be organized in a scientific fashion; it included a naturalist and astronomer, and carried a chronometer, first used systematically by the French on this voyage. #11066 A$450.00

39 38 [Finden, William]. THE PORTS, HARBOURS, WATERING- PLACES, AND COAST SCENERY OF GREAT BRITAIN. Illustrated by Views taken on the Spot, by W. H. Bartlett; with Descriptions by William Beattie, M.D. 2 vols., 4to; Vol. I, pp. [iv], 190; frontispiece & engraved title-page with vignette and 64 very fine steel-engraved plates, 1 woodcut illust. in text, appendix; Vol. II, pp. [iv], 156(last blank); frontispiece & engraved title-page with vignette and 58 very fine steelengraved plates; contemporary ornately gilt full hard-grained morocco (slight wear to foot of front joint to Vol. II); all edges gilt; a very fine, clean set; scarce in such condition. London; George Virtue; ***This book was commenced by the Findens and first published in 1838 with a much smaller complement of plates. It is consequently usually known as Finden s Ports and Harbours: the title given on the additional engraved title-pages is Finden s Views of the Ports, Harbours & Watering Places of Great Britain, Continued by W. H. Bartlett. The plates conform exactly to the lists given in the front of each volume, although a few plates are misplaced and all are delicately and beautifully hand-coloured. The book has been expertly oversewn and neatly recased in its original contemporary binding (which would probably have employed a gutta percha perfect binding - notorious for perishing), but there is no sign of any cleaning or washing. We can find no historical record of coloured copies, so this set has since been coloured, presumably at the time of sewing some time in the twentieth century. The colouring is carefully and beautifully executed to a high standard and makes for a most attractive book. #15960 A$

56 55 Jarman, Robert. JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE TO THE SOUTH SEAS, IN THE JAPAN, employed in the Sperm Whale Fishery, under the Command of Capt. John May. By Robert Jarman. First published at Beccles and London in Edited, with an Introduction, Notes, Chronology, and Index, by Robert M. Warneke, and faithfully reprinted from the original. Melbourne: Edition Renard vo, Limited New Edition; pp. XII, vi, 242, [243]-318; portrait, introduction, extensive notes, chronology, references and index; fully section-sewn on tapes and hand-bound in full linen, with printed labels on spine and front board; top edge dyed, marker ribbon. Melbourne; Edition Renard; ***Limited edition of 100 numbered copies within the overall limitation of 200 copies for sale. A new edition of the very rare account first published in two issues in 1838 and until now never reprinted - see Forbes 1104, also Bagnall 2685 and Ferguson 2526 (and 2526a). Robert Jarman, the son of a printer at Beccles, joined the crew as a young man of twenty years on a whaling voyage to the South Seas in During the next three to four years young Robert s forecastle jottings were transformed into a lively and well-crafted tale. The primary theme is the hard, unrelenting search for whales, reflected in Jarman s methodical recording of encounters with other whalers and elaborated with graphic descriptions of the excitements and dangers of whaling with the inevitable accidents, injuries, and tragic deaths. After cruising the Japan Sea, the ship reached the Hawaiian Islands at the end of October 1832 and anchored at Honolulu. The author noted 18 whalers in port. He describes the harbor and the method by which ships were towed in, and the Honolulu Fort, and the town and its native people (Forbes). He tells also of surviving gales and near disaster when the Japan was dismasted in a hurricane, which forced the stricken ship to Sydney for extensive repairs. Jarman gives an interesting account of Sydney, with perceptive comments on convicts and their management and the Aboriginals and their customs including the use of the boomerang. Subsequently the ship cruised around Rotuma, the Fiji Islands and New Zealand before returning to England. Along the way Jarman gives accounts of visits to bays and islands to trade for fresh provisions, and of longer stays at various ports for wood, water and to benefit the crew. A welcome respite from the rigors and grinding repetition of shipboard life, Jarman was obviously captivated by those of the natives who were friendly, and he perceptively and sympathetically described their modes of life, customs, and the effects of European intercourse and colonization. The scope and appeal of this book is enhanced by some lengthy passages on natural history, including observations on the social behaviour of sperm whales and encounters with sharks, other fish and birds. Because of several chance but pertinent events he was able to include commentaries on several dramatic episodes of Pacific maritime history, such as the Bligh mutiny and its aftermath, and recent massacres of ships crews by islanders a constant fear for lightly-armed visiting whalers. #27824 A$195.00

(Melbourne); The Miegunyah Press; (1997). ***First Edition, limited to 1000 copies for sale, and a superior production to any subsequent printings. The Endeavour is one of the most famous ships in maritime history, yet surprisingly few details of her were known to any but a small number of maritime historians. More than twenty-five years before publication of this book, Ray Parkin, seaman, author and artist was amazed to find how little was known and recorded of this ship, and set out to document everything he could discover. His researches were encouraged by that renowned scholar and chronicler of James Cook, Professor J. C. Beaglehole. The result is the most painstaking study of the Endeavour yet undertaken and a unique account of a great voyage of discovery: the passage up the east coast of Australia (then called New Holland) in the year Written for the scholar, mariner and layperson alike, Ray Parkin has recreated for the reader the very experience of being on board H. M. Bark Endeavour. With meticulous research, he reveals what she looked like, how she sailed, how she smelled; all aspects of daily life on board. No part of the ship or her functioning is too insignificant for his enquiries. The work is divided into two sections: Part I, The World of the Ship, details the sailor and his environment, the Captain, the ship herself, scurvy and provisioning, the ship s company, and remarks on individuals come to notice through misfortune or by their sins and adventures. The text is accompanied by a series of plans and figures depicting the ship s architecture and construction, her deck plan, rigging, sails, armament, boats, cables, anchors and accommodation. Fifteen of these are reproduced as large folding full-size sketches in the accompanying folding case. Part II, The Voyage (up the east coast of Australia), is a masterly synthesis of the Ships Log and the journals of James Cook, Sydney Parkinson and Joseph Banks, supplemented by extracts from the journals of other members of the ship s complement, and with interpretive commentary and explanatory charts. The Author was born in Melbourne and joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1928, spending eighteen years in the service. He was on board HMAS Perth in 1942 when the cruiser was sunk in Sunda Strait, killing two thirds of her complement. #49819 A$450.00
