Universities are the 10 editor@iaeme.com
2 Contribution of Indian Authors in Web of Science: Bibliometric Analysis of Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) torch-bearers of modern education and research. Now-a-days, higher education especially university system holds the responsibility to be at the forefront of research along with teaching. With the growing competition in education at international level and limited availability of public and private funding for education and research, measurement of productivity is becoming very important for prospective students, educational administrators, policy makers and funding agencies. Every year, various agencies prepare indices to evaluate the universities on different parameters of teaching and research. One of the parameters of evaluating an institution is its research output. Research output can be manifested in a number of ways like research papers published, patents acquired, technology transfers, industry collaborations, etc. Out of these, publication of research papers is one such parameter that can reliably show the research output of any country, university or a person. In the field of Arts & Humanities, Web of Science bibliographic database maintains an index known as Arts & Humanities Citation Index which covers various journals related to different specializations in the field of arts and humanities. This paper is an attempt to explore research output of Indian authors from the year 1999 to 2017 on the basis of publication data available in the Web of Science: Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI). An attempt has been made to understand the different aspects of research output by analyzing several parameters like annual publications, top journals, author profile, patterns of communication in national and international journals and characteristics of its top highly productive authors. The study uses publication data of 18 years (1999 to 2017) as available in the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI). 2. REVIEW OF LITERATURE A number of researchers have attempted to study the research output based on parameters like author affiliation, type of resources, citation data etc. The authorship pattern of research articles has been published in seven Scientific, Technical, Engineering, and Medical (STEM) library science journals (Aytac and Slutsky 2017). Journals like Science & Technology Libraries, Issues in Science & Technology Librarianship, Journal of Science Librarianship, Journal of Hospital Librarianship, Journal of the Medical Library Association, Medical Reference Services Quarterly, and Health Information and Libraries Journal were studied by using bibliometric techniques from 2011 till To determine the current state of art in STEM librarianship research by done using the data gathered from seven prominent STEM library science journals, using variables such as authorship, (2) affiliation, (3) country of origin, and (4) topic of the research articles (Aytac and Slutsky 2017). Some useful strategies for improving the international impact of academics may be to attract foreign and internationally collaborated contributions; selecting reviewers and authors in citing journals of high IF; establishing multidirectional collaboration with institutions that frequently publish or cite literatures and with priority disciplines; dynamically and intensively tracking and analyzing the terms of hot publications; and redesigning the website and adopt advanced digital publications (Ding 2017). While examining co-authored publications between China and Korea available in Web of Science (WoS) during the one-year period of 2014, the authors evaluated the government stimulation program for collaboration between China and Korea. In particular, they had applied dual approaches, full integer versus fractional counting and collaborative publications 11 editor@iaeme.com
3 Dr. Bhupinder Singh, Dr. S K Bawa, Dr. Amandeep Singh in order to examine both the patterns and contents of Sino-Korean collaboration networks in terms of individual countries and institutions (Park et. al. 2016). An overview of the data set qualities produced by different author name disambiguation process (ANDP) and use of simulations to study the general impact of data set quality on different bibliometric analysis has shown that rankings of authors are only valid on high quality data sets, which are not found directly in commercially available datasets. Both mean and individual per person data set quality is important for valid ranking results. Regressions are not influenced by the overall data set quality but by individual quality differences between authors. Different types of errors can potentially bias the regression results (Schulz 2016). It showed the importance of reporting both overall and individual variation in data set quality, so that the validity of analyses based on these data sets could be assessed. 3. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The following objectives were formulated to examine the research output of Indian authors in Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI): To explore the growth of Indian publications among the Asian countries To study the distribution of type of publications To analyse the frequency and trend of Indian publications in A&HCI To find the source types of the publications which get cited more often in the arts and humanities literature To analyze the overall contribution of Indian authors in A&HCI 4. METHODOLOGY The Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) from 1999 to August, 2017 available through Thomson s Reuters Web of Science (WoS), was studied to explore the research output. To collect the data for the study, an online search was conducted in A&HCI during the first week of September 2017, using the Field Tags: CU= Country. A total of 3234 such publications were identified having affiliation with India. Full bibliographic detail is available for these records in the A&HCI database. Separate files were created for types of the publications, author names, and journal names etc. for these 3234 publications. 5. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION As reflected in the A&HCI database, total 3234 publications were available in the database during where field tag was CU=India. As shown in table 1, based on the countrywise data of number of publications published during the period under study, India ranks fourth in Asian countries preceded by China, Japan and South Korea at first, second and third place respectively. 4 Contribution of Indian Authors in Web of Science: Bibliometric Analysis of Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) One indicator of quality or impact of the publications is the citations the paper receives in other paper. On this parameter, India is at 8 th place in Asian countries with 1.59 citations per paper as shown in table1 and Indonesia grabs the first place with 2.77 average citations per publication publications by Indian authors were cited 5138 times while 315 publications of Indonesian authors were cited 874 times. Total 3234 publications were published in eighteen years, thus, on an average, 180 publications were published every year and there was a steady increase in the number of publications published each year as shown in figure-1. In the beginning of our dataset i.e. 1999, only 88 publications were published with affiliation CU=India, while in the year 2016, this rose to 347 publications, thereby showing fourfold increase on quantitative basis and this increase is more from 2009 onwards as shown in the figure-1. Periods Figure 1 Growth of Indian Publications in A&HCI 1999 to 2017 Research publications are not limited to research articles only and can be in a number of other forms like reviews, proceedings, creative writing pieces etc. Figure-2 displays publication type-wise distribution of 3234 publications published during and indexed in A&HCI. Article is the most common type of research publications with 1894 (58.6%) publications being in this form followed by book reviews 1048 (32.4%), editorial material 130 (4.0%), poetry 49 (1.5%), proceedings papers 41 (1.3%), reviews 38 (1.2%), others 34 (1.1%) as indicated in figure 1. 49, 2% 41, 1% 34, 1% 130, 4% 38, 1% 1048, 32% 1894, 59% ARTICLE BOOK REVIEW EDITORIAL MATERIAL POETRY PROCEEDINGS PAPER REVIEW Others Figure 2 Distribution of publication by type 13 editor@iaeme.com
5 Dr. Bhupinder Singh, Dr. S K Bawa, Dr. Amandeep Singh These 3234 publications were cited 5138 times with 1.59 average citations per publication. Break-up of average citation per publication for different content types reveals that reviews were the most cited form with 269 citations with 7.08 citations per paper on an average. Citations for articles were 4727 with 2.5 average citation per paper and proceedings papers with 217 citations with 5.29 average citation per paper as revealed from table 3. On the other hand book reviews, editorials, poetry and others were the least cited type of publications Citations in diffrent sources Sum of Times Cited Average citations per item Figure 3 Total citation and average citations The total citations received were 5138 from 3234 publications, published in A&HCI from 1999 to The average citation received per paper was In the year 2009, 4.96 average citations per paper were received and in 2004, 3.81 average citations per paper were received Frequency of Citations Figure 4 Shows the research output of Indian publications in Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI). Based on the number of publications in A&HCI, it was found that 15 journals published 1279 publications and total cumulative publications output by India during was 39.55%. The most recurrent journal was Indian Economic and Social History Review, which published 319 publications followed by Journal of Dharma with 274 publications of Indian authors in A&HCI 1999 to 2017 as revealed from table editor@iaeme.com

Indian authors are more inclined to publish research articles then other types 15 editor@iaeme.com
7 Dr. Bhupinder Singh, Dr. S K Bawa, Dr. Amandeep Singh of publications. It has been explored that trend of Indian authors to publish their materials is towards Indian publications and 4720 were cited in articles and only three Indian authors contributed more than 20 papers in A&HCI It should also be noted that Indian authors are contributing a lot in terms of research publications but most of these journals are not listed in A&HCI which becomes a limiting factor for wider dissemination of research output. It is suggested that Indian authors and publishers working in the field of arts and humanities be made aware of publications in Web of Science. Second point is that even in the current age of information technology and proliferation of online journals and research databases, a larger chunk of Indian journals in the field of arts and humanities are still published only in print form which remain outside the reach of computerized research databases and indexes and therefore, their citations cannot be counted. To mitigate this problem, online versions of print journals should be encouraged, secondly, a separate citation index for print-only journals can help in evaluating the research performance of researchers working in the fields of arts and humanities.
