3 Introduction Field Notes are the official record of the survey. That s why in court you would be required to produce the field notes not just a plan. As such they must contain a field record of everything done in the course of the survey. 3

4 One of the often overlooked aspects of field notes is a record of all searches for survey evidence, and records of supporting evidence such as fences, pits, etc. Are there e any markings on the post? Permit numbers, 1/4, R number, etc. Is the post different from others located, has it been re-established. All points that should be noted. 4

5 Split Line Field Notes All Surveys made under Part 2 of the Surveys Act even today use the split line field note format. Understanding the note format is crucial for using split line notes for information today. There are a few basic rules we will go through that allows one to read and understand or even create split line notes. 5

6 Take a line Split it 6

7 Rules The split line is the actual survey line even if it is a trial line and not true line that was surveyed. Think of each side of the split line as each having g½ of the whole line. Chainages are written between the two halves of the split line. Just as the line is split, if the line runs from or through a survey monument, the monument too is split with ½ on each ½ of the line. 7

8 Rules Appropriate section numbers are written on each side of the page. If the line surveyed is one limit of a Government Road Allowance, the other limit of the Government Road Allowance is shown on the appropriate side of the split line. 8

9 Rules Chainages always start at the bottom of the page and increase towards the top of the page. That is because as you look from bottom to top of the page, towards the top, that is the direction the line was surveyed. This of course means that north is not always automatically towards the top of a page. Date the line was run appears at the bottom of the page. Legal description of line surveyed and direction appear at the top of the page. 9

10 Rules Since they are actual field notes consecutive page numbers and the index indicate the order lines were surveyed in. Just as on a Township plan correction line monuments are shown as squares where other monuments are shown as diamond shaped. Of course the pits are square as well, rather than diamond shaped. 10

12 Front Page of the Field Book Shows the Township the survey was in. Shows the name of the land surveyor. Shows the start and end dates for the survey in represented by the notes in the field book. 12

16 Index Page Shows a diagram of the township with each line surveyed having the field book page number shown within the line. Section lines without numbers were not surveyed on these dates by this surveyor. As noted earlier the page numbering will show you what order the lines were surveyed in. 16

23 Lets look at the Township Plan Remember the field note pages we saw. Lets see if the Township plan agrees with the notes. Again remember that the notes are the official record, not the Township Plan.
