Middle School Students, We are very excited to announce the eighth year of the summer reading program here at Pittsgrove Twp. Middle School. While summer is a time for students to relax and participate in recreational activities with friends, it should also be a time to entertain oneself with a good book. Summer reading is not only enjoyable for children, but is also very necessary. Studies have shown that when children read each day, they learn to read faster and they improve their comprehension skills. If children don t read for a month or two, they will lose a great deal of progress made during the school year. Children who read during the summer start school ready to continue their progress and will most likely adapt more quickly to the grade level curriculum. Please share newspapers, magazines and books that you read with your children. Throughout this summer, our middle school students will read and enjoy one or two new books: one award winning book and one self selected book. Links to a list of award winning books can be found on the PTMS Media Center webpage. The student will complete one or two different projects (see attached). Part of the reading program involves students writing about what they ve read, so they can apply strategies they will use all year in sustained silent reading and independent reading pursuits. The completed tasks are due the first week of school. No class time will be allocated in the fall to complete this assignment. This is entirely a summer assignment. The summer reading program is a course requirement for your students Language Arts class. It is the student s responsibility to get the books and complete the assignment on time. Students may borrow books from the school library, a public library or a friend, or they may purchase them. The PTMS and APSHS Media Centers will be open on designated days during the summer (dates TBD) A student may visit another building s media center for technology use, however, they will only be able to check out books from their designated library. 3 Pittsgrove Twp. Middle School Summer Reading Program 2016 Frequently Asked Questions 1. What is the Summer Reading Program at PTMS all about? Reading throughout the summer is extremely important and all students are encouraged to read as much as possible. You will be required to read two books over the summer months and then respond with two different projects. 2. What do I read? You must read one Newbery, Orbis Pictus, or Robert F. Sibert award or honor book (including other books by an award winning author) and one grade appropriate book of your choosing. 3. Where do I get my summer reading books? PTMS library (before the end of the school year or during summer hours), public library, friend, or bookstore 4. Am I going to be graded on my summer reading? Yes, summer reading is a mandatory assignment. You will receive a summer reading grade that will count as 3% of your Language Arts 1 st marking period grade. The scoring checklists are attached. You will be graded as follows: Letter grade A for two or more books read with a passing submitted task for each; Letter grade B for one book read with a passing submitted task. 5. What are my response project options? Basic Book Report (forms attached) Scrapbook Page Book Trailer Movie, Keynote or Power Point 6. How many books do I have to read? The more books you read over the summer the better it is for you! You are expected to read a minimum of one OR two books and complete one or two different projects.

Correctly presents bibliographic information. Describes setting, including the when and the where. Provides physical and personality traits of main characters. Completely summarizes book, and includes the main problem. Lists all main events. Presents conclusion (how did it end) and solution (how was the problem solved. Evaluates the book and gives evidence for opionion. Grade for the project

6 Reader Note: Students must earn 5 out of 7 checks from the items listed below for each project to receive a passing score. Book v. Movie Essay Grading Checklist Includes title and author of the book as well as the director of the film. Includes a summary of what happened in the book (minimum 2 paragraph) Makes clear references to how the movie was similar or different in the review. Explains why one is superior to the other using specific examples from both. Tells why the director chose to make specific changes in the storyline. Lists 4-5 examples total of how the book is similar and different. Has few grammar and spelling errors Grade for the project Note: Two projects had to be completed in order to earn an A. One project had to be completed in order to earn a B.

Scrapbook Page: Product includes your name, title, and the author of the book. Product includes pictures/drawings relating to the book. The product includes: Fiction: Main characters and events from the book. Nonfiction: Main ideas and interesting facts from the book. Product is neat and organized showing pre-planning. A key quote from the book is used in the product. Product includes opinion and recommendation. Few errors in grammar or spelling. The movie trailer presents the student s name and the title and author of the book. The movie trailer hooks the audience in to the book. Fiction: The movie trailer includes a summary of the book, which does not give away the ending. Also includes a credits page. Non Fiction: The movie trailer includes main ideas and interesting facts from the book. The movie trailer has 5 clips/frames (minimum) which are clear and relate to the book. Clips may be sti pictures or video clips. The movie trailer includes appropriate background music and visuals. Has few grammar and spelling errors. Is a maximum of 3 minutes in length. Grade for the project
