The library is open to students throughout the school day, beginning at 8:00 AM. Students must show their library card to use the library. Students wishing to use the library during morning homeroom should obtain a pass from their homeroom teacher. Students wishing to use the library during their tutorial period must present a pass from the teacher/proctor. Students are permitted to use the library during one tutorial period each week. If a student needs additional library time during that week, s/he should see the library staff for a special access pass. The school library is a learning environment. In order to provide an appropriate atmosphere for study or research, students are expected to adhere to the following rules: Talking should be kept to a minimum. Conversation necessary for completing assignments should be in a low voice. Appropriate activities are searching for an independent reading selection taking Accelerated Reader quizzes completing Moodle and other class assignments requiring computer access working on small group projects/assignments reading magazines conducting research. Gum chewing and eating are not permitted in the library. Students may spend one period a day in the library. Those who need more time must see the library staff to obtain a special pass. The consequences for rule violations are as follows: 1 st Offense Verbal Warning 2 nd Offense Return to classroom of origin 3 rd Offense A week out of the library 4 th Offense Referral to the assistant principal Electronic Resources CHAT with a LIBRARIAN When you need help, this link from the top of the Power Library page is the ticket. You may ask a librarian 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The answers/information is sent via . At the end of the session, a record of the chat will be sent, too. POWER LIBRARY This site houses a mountain of materials, including full-text books. For middle-schoolers the Children s Resources are the best fit. You need a public library card to access this from home. You may also apply online for an e- card to use immediately. Remember, the Children s Resources are the best fit for middle school research. INTERNET PUBLIC LIBRARY This is a collection of sources on a variety of subjects. Search and you will find. This link works from home, so you have a solid source for research and just learning new things. Other Links Under This is where the links for teachers pages are found. These lists of websites can be accessed from home. GROLIER This is an online encyclopedia comprised of 5 encyclopedias. You may only access this link from within the school. Reading level of articles are listed. In Grolier Multimedia, there are research starters, games and quizzes. EASYBIB This free site will guide you through the creation of accurate bibliographies for all of your research. Can be accessed from home, too. When you have entered the information for all of your sources, use Export/Print to save your bibliography. Library Policies & Procedures To borrow materials, a student must present his library card or student ID at the circulation desk. The card number, title information and due date will be stored in the computer. Most books and paperbacks circulate for two weeks. Students may renew most books and paperbacks twice. If student requires additional time, s/he may ask the library staff for an additional renewal. Reference books (including encyclopaedias) and magazines circulate overnight. They should be returned to the library during morning homeroom. Beginning on the day following the due date, fines will begin to accumulate. Most materials carry an overdue fine of 10 cents per day. Overnight materials not returned on time will be charged 20 cents per day. Fines continue to accumulate until materials are returned. Students are encouraged to check their library accounts weekly (directions are included in the section) and/or during their scheduled classroom visits. Reminders about overdue materials and/or fines are sent to students in homeroom weekly. When receiving a third notice of an overdue or fine, a detention may be issued by the librarian. Lost materials will be charged at replacement cost. NOVELIST This a great source to help you find books, esp. if you want one like another you have read. This site also has author information. Located in s links under CCMS Datebases. This is only accessible from the school.

REPORT any damage to the librarian immediately. Unreported damage may be charged to you! 2. Keep our library s book OUT of your binder. Binder rings put dents in covers and take bites from book spines. You will be charged for this damage. 3. Keep our library s book away from swimming gear and water bottles. 4. Keep our library s book away from younger siblings, especially if they are playing with crayons! 5. Keep our library s book away from puppies whether they are playing with crayons or not! 6. If your teacher requires you to keep a reading log or write thoughts on post-its, please do not hold your pen/pencil while reading. These marks make reading the book difficult. You will be charged for excessive damage. 9. Do not loan your library book to a friend. You are financially responsible for all books and materials checked out on your account. 10. The ATOS Readability Formula for Books determines Accelerated Reader book levels. (ATOS stands for Advantage/TASA Open Standard.) These levels are not grade equivalent numbers. The readability levels in ATOS are determined by full-text computer scans of all the words in a book, not just sample passages. The levels indicate the text s difficulty and help predict which books individual readers may comprehend. INTEREST LEVELS RELATE TO CONTENT AND APPROPRIATENESS Books are assigned an interest level based on publisher recommendations about the grade-level appropriateness of the content: MG = middle grades, approximately 4 8 UG = upper grades, approximately 9 12 POINTS RELATE TO A BOOK S LENGTH AND DIFFICULTY Points are assigned to each book based on its length and difficulty. For example, Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Disgusting Sneakers, which is about 9,467 words long, is a 1-point book. The Color Purple, about 66,556 words long, is a 9-point book. Points do not reflect a book s literary value.
