2 Welcome The Association of Book Pblishers of BC (ABPBC) is a provincial association of book pblishing companies and is the largest regional affiliate of the Association of Canadian Pblishers (ACP). Fonded in 1974 by five book pblishers, the ABPBC has expanded to a membership of over fifty. The ABPBC believes that a healthy BC-owned and -controlled book pblishing indstry is essential to the edcational, social, cltral and economic life of the province. 3 A Gide for Writers What We Do The ABPBC receives many enqiries from writers abot the pblishing indstry. The information in this directory introdces the pblic to or members and the kinds of pblishing that they do. A directory of pblishers, as well as more information on pblishing, can also be fond on or website at books.bc.ca. Athors shold make sre to send their manscripts to an appropriate pblisher. Pblishers have specific areas that they pblish in, which are noted in their listing. Check ot their individal websites to ensre the manscript is going to the right pblisher. For frther sbmission gidelines, please see individal pblisher s websites. Unless indicated otherwise, do not telephone the pblisher or drop by the office. Pblishers receive many, many manscripts and have limited staff so do not expect a fll critiqe of yor work. Do not or fax manscripts, nless otherwise indicated. Use reglar mail. Allow at least eight to ten weeks for a pblisher to respond to yor sbmission. Advocacy on behalf of BC pblishers The ABPBC works with governments at the provincial and federal level to ensre the health of the book pblishing indstry throgh the development of comprehensive pblishing policies. Identification of isses, research and discssion lead to the development of policies designed to ensre that the cltral and indstrial activities of or membership are addressed in enlightened pblic policy. Sccessfl collaborations between the book indstry throgh the ABPBC and government have reslted in the following initiatives: Block and Project Fnding Programs BC Arts Concil (BCAC) fnding programs spport the pblication of cltrally relevant titles from eligible BC pblishers. Book Pblishing Tax Credit (BPTC) The BPTC provides refndable credits to eligible BC book pblishers throgh the tax system. BC Film BC Film initiated, in consltation with the ABPBC, two programs to encorage partnerships between the BC film and BC pblishing indstries. The Optioning Fnd provides financing for the initial optioning of a work by a Canadian athor pblished by an eligible BC pblisher ( bc.ca/optioning-fnd.php < 2 php> ) and the Mlti-Platform Exploration Fnd ( 3 <

4 provides financial spport to proposals examining the mlti-platform potential of a project or story concept. BC Archives The BC Archives ensres valable cltral material is available to the pblic throgh book pblication. Disconted prices for the reprodction of images from the BC Archives are available to ABPBC members. BC Books on BC Ferries The BC book section of the BC Ferries gift shops provides a vene for the sale and showcasing of BC-pblished and athored titles. Crrently, the ABPBC is working on the following policy objectives: Increased Fnding for the BC Arts Concil Recognizing that the crrent government has made some increases to the bdget of the BCAC bt recognizing also that fnding for this important organization remains among the lowest per capita in Canada, the ABPBC contines to recommend increased fnding for this crcial organization. Renewal of the Book Pblishing Tax Credit The ABPBC believes the BPTC is the single most important program delivered to book pblishers in BC ensring, as it does, the indstry s cltral and economic growth. The BPTC became effective in September 2002 and was renewed in the 2007 provincial bdget. The ABPBC will condct an evalation of this program leading p to its renewal in Libraries who are working to ensre that all school libraries are open across the province and throghot the school week with qalified teacher-librarians on staff and sfficient fnds to replace otdated books. Increased Fnding for Writers The ABPBC recommends a program of fnding delivered throgh the BCAC to assist pblishers to pay advances to writers. A program sch as this will deliver mch-needed spport to writers to complete works and will enable pblishers to compete with mlti-nationals. BC Ferries Showcase of BC Books The ABPBC sits on an advisory committee to the BC Ferries to ensre that the BC books section of the gift shops contines to showcase BC books as well as generate the best possible retrns. Marketing, Promotion &Awareness The ABPBC works to develop and expand markets for and to raise awareness of BCpblished books throgh the following programs: Best of BC Books Online The ABPBC in a consortim consisting of the BC Electronic Library Network, the BC Library Association, the Edcational Resorce Acqisition Consortim, and commnity partners the Irving K. Barber Centre and Simon Fraser University is crrently compiling a digital library Health of School Libraries 4 that will be available in the ftre throgh school, pblic and postsecondary libraries to all British Colmbians. 5 All stdies indicate stdent achievement is directly related to access to good school libraries. The ABPBC spports the BC Coalition for School

5 BC Bestseller List Compiled by TBM BookManager, this weekly list is distribted to media otlets, bookstores and sales representatives and is posted weekly on the ABPBC website. Open to all BC pblishers. BC Books for BC Schools This cataloge of BC-pblished books sitable for school libraries featres titles selected and annotated by teacher-librarians. The cataloge is distribted to all schools in BC and is available on or website. Open to Active, Associate and Spporting members. BC Ferry Promotions and Book Passage brochre The ABPBC works actively with the BC Ferry Corporation and its book spplier to promote members books on the ferries throgh good signage, special promotions, seasonal posters and the brochre Book Passage. Open to Active, Associate and Spporting members. Canadian Aboriginal Books for Schools This cataloge featres Canadian pblished titles by, for and abot Aboriginal peoples and sitable for K-12 libraries. The books are selected and annotated by teacher-librarians. Open to ABPBC and ACP member pblishers Poetry in Transit In partnership with TransLink and BC Transit, the ABPBC prodces sixteen poetry cards annally featring the work of BC-athored and Canadian-pblished poets. The cards are displayed on bses and SkyTrains throghot the transit systems in BC. Open to all Canadian pblishers. The ABPBC works to raise the profile and visibility of the British Colmbia book indstry in the following ways: Booksellers The ABPBC throgh or cstomer relations committee works to promote BC books provincially and nationally. Gray Campbell Distingished Service Award This annal award is presented to an individal who has made a significant contribtion to the BC book pblishing indstry. Jim Doglas Pblisher of the Year Award This award is presented at the discretion of the ABPBC board to recognize an active BC pblisher that has earned the respect and applase of the commnity. Media Displays The ABPBC responds to all reqests from the media to discss isses The ABPBC attends conferences throghot the year with information related to book pblishers and writing. abot BC pblishing and displays of or members books. 6 Pblic Events The Word On The Street, the BC Book Prizes and the former BC Book & Magazine Week all originated from the ABPBC. Or members and staff contine to serve on boards of or participate in these organizations. UNESCO World City of Literatre Citing the excellence of writing and pblishing in BC and the oral storytelling tradition in or First Nations, the ABPBC is crrently working with Alma Lee, former Artistic Director of the Vancover International Writers and Readers Festival, to have Vancover designated a UNESCO World City of Literatre. Bsiness Development Professional Development The ABPBC organizes three to for seminars a year on sbjects determined by the membership. In 2009, the ABPBC will hold sessions on digital formats, distribtion and opportnities; online marketing projects; promotional writing; and film contracts and opportnities in cooperation with BC Film and the BC Film and Television Prodcers Association. Open to ACP and ABPBC members. ABPBC Friends and non-members may attend where appropriate and as space allows. The ABPBC maintains contact with all indstry-related organizations to foster relations and the promotion of Canadian books. These organizations inclde Access Copyright, Alliance for Arts and Cltre, BookNet Canada, BC Film, BC Library Association, BC Teacher-Librarians Association and the Federation of BC Writers. Information ABPBC E/FaxTotms This weekly circlar provides information to all members and Friends on indstry isses, ABPBC services, promotion and marketing opportnities, and the weekly bestseller list. ABPBC Website The ABPBC website provides information to the pblic on pblishing and promotes members books. Environmentally Sond Paper Initiative Since 2002, the ABPBC has promoted the se of environmentally sond paper in the prodction of or members books. Partnering with Markets Initiative, the ABPBC spearheaded an initiative that now sees pblishers across the contry, in the US and Erope following or lead. The initiative wold not have been possible withot the spport and cooperation of Canada s book printers. An EcoKit is available on the ABPBC website. Networking Annal Retreat The ABPBC annal retreat is an opportnity for Active members of the 8 9 ABPBC to network, share information and meet with fnders.

7 Membership Categories Active Members* For companies with at least 7 titles in print and an annal prodction of 2 titles. Active members direct ABPBC policies and projects throgh their vote at the ABPBC Annal General Meeting and seats on the exective board and committees. Associate Members For companies with 2 titles in print pblished in the previos 3 years. Spporting Members For companies with 1 title pblished within the previos 3 years. Friends of the ABPBC Friends of the ABPBC spport the aims and objectives of the ABPBC. Friends may inclde sppliers, indstry associations, book marketers, editors, printers, pblishing edcators or pblishers who are not yet eligible for membership or whose head office is based otside BC. Friends of the ABPBC will receive the newsletter, research or information made available from ABPBC projects. Friends may obtain preferred rates on services. Friends who are not members of the ACP may also attend Professional Development seminars at non-member rates or information meetings with visiting pblishing organizations sch as the Association for the Export of Canadian Books, Access Copyright or BookNet Canada when appropriate and as space allows. Friends are pblishers with a head office in BC or are Canadian pblishers and ACP members whose head offices are in another province, they may participate in certain specialty cataloges and Poetry in Transit at non-member rates. Pblisher Friends also benefit from the lobbying activities and awareness campaigns ndertaken by the ABPBC. If Friends are mbrella organizations representing a nmber of pblishers or self-pblishers, those pblishers may not access ABPBC projects nless they become members. If Friends become eligible for ABPBC membership, they mst do so in order to access ABPBC services and benefits. *The constittion of the ABPBC reqires that all Active members be members of the Association of Canadian Pblishers (ACP). See the ABPBC constittion for frther details on membership criteria. If the Friends are pblishers with their head office in BC, their ISBNs may be 10 registered with The BookManager for the BC Bestseller List. They may also 11 participate in book displays and conferences where space is available. If the
