4 FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE OF MALTON WORKING FOR BUSINESS Groovy Moo s Groovy Moove When I read about the development at Talbot Yard I just knew I wanted to be part of it Michelle Walker, Groovy Moo Ice Cream Company, Malton Michelle s development of the Groovy Moo brand came at a tough time for her personally. Her late husband was in the terminal stages of cancer but his illness and its possible sources gave her the idea of using pure ingredients to create the finest ice creams. Sean was born and brought up in Malton, says Michelle. There is so much happening here in terms of growth and development and the thinking behind the Talbot Yard is so visionary that it seemed the ideal place to be. The new venture also presented the opportunity for her son Ashley and daughter Amy to play leading roles in building the new business. We all want to create something which will be of benefit to the next generation, says Michelle. In a town with such a history of family businesses that seems especially appropriate. Michelle Walker, founder of the Groovy Moo Ice Cream Company based in the Talbot Yard Malton has run businesses of one kind or another all her life, but is passionate about her latest venture - not least because of its location. I come from a family background which has always had small businesses, and I was no exception, says Michelle. When I read about the food scene in Malton and the development of Talbot Yard as a place where high quality products could be made and sold I just knew I wanted to be part of it. Between having the idea to produce high quality ice cream and getting things under way in Talbot Yard there were a number of practical problems to solve. The Estate were keen to help us get going, says Michelle. I got a real sense during the discussions that not only did they want to let property, they also wanted to encourage businesses that could make a long term contribution to the town. It was encouraging that their plans had scope in them for businesses like ours to grow. For Michelle a key attraction for Malton is that it s a town with a future and the right kind of local clientele. People here understand what good quality is better than many. That - and of course our top quality ice cream - means that we are off to a flying start and see a very promising future.

5 Brass Castle brewery puts down some roots It s a long way from the United Nations building in New York to Yorkersgate in Malton but it was at the first location that Phil Saltonstall, now one of the directors of Brass Castle Brewery (but then working for Her Majesty s Government) had a conversation with an American colleague which led, ultimately, to the brewery s foundation. FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE OF MALTON WORKING FOR BUSINESS I d always enjoyed making home-brewed beer, says Phil. I got into conversation with a colleague after a meeting about a brew I d made in my apartment in New York. It turned out his brother ran a small brewery. One thing led to another and I went to work for him and then, when I came back to England, starting making and selling beer from my garage in Pocklington. If the original plan had been to make and sell beer to local pubs it soon became clear that the beer was actually going much further afield. This presented both problems and opportunities as the business grew and it soon became apparent that they would need to find more suitable permanent premises. It was after a chance conversation with a member of the Estate staff that they started to look at Malton. Tom Naylor-Leyland and the Estate staff were incredibly helpful when it came to looking at premises, recalls Phil. We clearly ticked the right boxes as potential tenants since we fitted well into the profile of Malton as a food town - our beers are craft made, and vegan and vegetarian friendly. Brass Castle looked at a number of places but then happened on its present location which seemed perfect. It has a floor which drains centrally, has converted nicely to a 12 barrel brew house with conditioning tanks, has good covered storage and is easily accessible from Yorkersgate for vehicles picking up loads and delivering ingredients, says Ian. Just as important, it has room for the kind of growth we envisage in the forseeable future. Malton s geographical location is a key factor for Brass Castle Brewery. Our beer is going out in pallet loads to all parts of the UK, says Phil. Distribution is made much easier by our proximity to the A64 and then to the main motorway network in all directions. There s another plus too: the railway line between York and Scarborough which means that customers who come to our tap room openings once a month can leave their cars behind. 6 FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE OF MALTON WORKING FOR BUSINESS The Estate were brilliant in helping us plan and make the conversion Andrew Walker, The Patisserie, Malton I got myself through catering courses at York College and then went straight into catering first at Middlethorpe Hall and then in various pubs and cafes, says Andrew. It was really hard work but I learned a great deal about the practical aspects of working in and then running a busy kitchen and about serving customers. Andrew s first love has always been in patisserie and his first foray on his own account was in a small shop in Newbiggin in Malton. We did very well but it was clear almost from the outset that we could do better in a larger place closer to the town centre, says Andrew. Almost as soon as I opened the doors on the first shop the Estate started talking to us about premises they had, he recalls. Of course, we had to honour our existing lease but as soon as the time was right we started looking more closely at 14 Saville Street right in the heart of town and a location greatly helped by the 2 hours free parking in the Market Place which the Estate introduced a few years back to boost local businesses. The sweet taste of success for The Patisserie, Malton When Andrew Walker was leaving school he was told by a teacher that because of his dyslexia he would never do anything more than menial work. Fast forward a few years and Andrew owns and runs The Patisserie in Saville Street Malton which one reviewer accurately describes as a great local Patisserie good customer service with a great menu selection...and lots of local produce to purchase. The premises had been a kitchenware shop and, on the face of it, was quite unsuitable as a venue for a small café and shop. The Estate were brilliant in helping us plan and make the conversion, says Andrew. They undertook all the necessary structural work to open the place up and after a great deal of mucking in by the team here to decorate, we were in business. The Patisserie has now been in Saville Street for just over a year. We ve never looked back, says Andrew. We have a wonderful mixture of regular local trade but our regular income is boosted throughout the year by casual visitors and by devotees of the Food Markets and Food Lovers Festivals. What could be better for a food business like mine than to have thousands of people come to Malton regularly just for the food!

7 Baker McVeigh and Abbott add to Malton s winning form Horse racing and the breeding and training of racing thoroughbreds is part of Malton s history. The Darley Arabian, one of the three Arab stallions from which all thoroughbreds are descended, stood at stud at Buttercrambe not far from Malton. Bay Malton (foaled in 1760, died 1786) one of the most successful horses of its time, was born and bred in Malton. Horses are still very much part of the Town and its future since this is one of the UK s most important centres of sporting equine activity along with Newmarket and Lambourne - which is why one of the world s most respected equine veterinary practices has chosen to set up a base here. Baker McVeigh and Abbott Ltd based in Old Malton joins sister practices in Newmarket, Chantilly and Cape Town to offer an international service to owners and trainers. The move was client led, says Brian Abbott. Connections in the south of England suggested that the service we offer there should be available here given its importance in the racing scene. We moved in during March 2014 and we have been busy ever since. Baker McVeigh and Abbott decided to look for a rented property which would be big enough to act as a business base, as a home for Brian and his wife, and as a base for occasional visiting colleagues with specialist skills. Once we started looking it soon became apparent that the Fitzwilliam Estate would be the ones to come up with something suitable, says Brian. When we saw this place we felt it was ideal. It had recently been entirely refurbished to a very high standard following a long lease by an elderly couple so was ready to move into. The process of agreeing terms and moving in was hassle free and completed very quickly. Whilst Baker McVeigh and Abbott vet and consult on horses all over the world, Brian Abbott feels that right now he is in the right place. This is a superb base, road and rail communications are excellent so I m well placed for clients anywhere in Yorkshire and further afield, he says. What s more, the practice is already growing with vets Camilla Nock joining soon after we started and Paul Lentelink who joined us more recently. In racing circles I think they d say the going here is good! 9 FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE OF MALTON WORKING FOR PEOPLE Richard and Ann settle down in Malton When Richard and Ann Thorpe started thinking about retirement they both knew that they wanted a change and that part of that change would come about by releasing the equity in their home to free them and their capital to follow their hearts desire. We are both York born and bred so once we d sold up we tried to stay in York but were never really settled, says Ann. York has changed a lot and in that process has lost a lot of the sense of community which we used to enjoy so much. It was while returning from an outing to the coast that Ann caught sight of the To Let sign outside what is now their home in Yorkersgate. We made an appointment to view it and I knew immediately it was right for us. I saw the potential of it and appreciated the historic feel of the house. I loved all its nooks and crannies and its period features, particularly the fireplaces. Richard adds, We also saw the property on the internet, so when we came to view it, we liked Malton so much, we knew it was the town for us. Richard and Ann - both of whom have a keen eye for interior design - have put their own stamp on the house, which they share with their dog Barney. When asked why they chose Malton over York, Richard said, The people are friendly, everything is on your doorstep, from the post office to pubs - and the transport links could hardly be better. We also liked the Estate s position as a long-term owner of property. With the Estate-type ownership we have the security of knowing that we are not faced with the fear that the owner will want to sell the property in six months time; the level of stability offered by the Estate was a big factor for us. And the Estate s builders have been wonderful, looking after the property before we moved in and continuing to improve it now we have settled. Malton is friendly, very historic, convenient and beautiful; a town with a real community. We have been made to feel so welcome that we know this move is for the long-term. For that reason we ve put our own mark on this property and invested in its décor. We love it here!
