As a non-profit film commission, we play an indispensable role in the economic development of the Greater Victoria region helping to generate more than $162-million in spending in the Capital Regional District in the past decade. Almost $13-million went into the local economy last year. 6 Economic Benefits of the Film Industry The Vancouver Island South Film & Media Commission provides a great return on investment helping to generate in excess of $162-million in direct spending in the last 10 years. Not to mention the indirect dollars spent by crew and production companies on everything from coffee and transportation to entertainment and shopping. In 2009, in excess of $12.5-million in direct spending from TV mini-series, movies of the week, reality TV series, commercials, independent features and documentaries went into the CRD economy in the following sectors: Accommodations, airlines, art supplies, building supplies, vehicle rentals, gas purchases, parking, cell phones, cleaners, offices, coffee, computer rentals, couriers, ferry, flowers, laundry, legal, limo, locksmith, locations, office supplies, photofinishing, recycling, restaurants, sign & vehicle graphics, sound/video stock, special events equipment, taxi, water services, to name a few.
