3 How the Book Works - Sight Words Through the Town This is a fun, interactive text for kids to practice reading sight words. In addition, there are various challenges in the book that require students to attend to the first letter, read through the word, and practice one to one correspondence - all to the familiar tune of a song (The Wheels on the Bus)! Construction of the book is done completely by parents or teachers. I create one example, and leave instructions for volunteers to complete the rest. You can find a copy of the volunteer instructions in this packet. For this book you will need: white or cream colored card stock, bindings, velcro dots or velcro strips, envelopes The idea of the book is that it can change each time it is read. You will have 25 sight words prepped with Velcro that can be attached in any order, on any page. The student then sings the book, but must attend carefully to the words (as they change each time it is read.) There are several blank spaces available for you to write in any sight words you want to add. On each page there are lines for the repetitive parts of the song to ensure that children are practicing pointing to words as they sing. For example, they might sing, The word on the plane is dad, dad, dad, dad, dad, dad, dad, dad, dad. The word on the plane is dad, dad, dad, all through the town. The next time they read the book it might be, The word on the plane is am, am, am, am, am, am, am, am, am. The word on the plane is am, am, am,
4 The last page of the book continues the song, but allows for practice of many words. Four words will not be used each time, so there is some rotation. Notice that several pages provide additional challenges. Students will need to read ship, (not boat), fire engine (not fire truck), and canoes, (not canoe.) You can also have great discussions about one to one correspondence and commas! All words are kept in an envelope in the back of the book for easy access. This book allows for fun, limitless practice of sight words. You can even pair students up and have them create challenges for one another! There are choices provided for you in the packet. You can print in color or black and white. You can create one book to enjoy as a class, or have volunteers create one book per student. All instructions are included to facilitate your experience. Enjoy!
5 Sight Words Through the Town This is a book that has multiple steps in construction. It is a big project, but SO fun for the kids. Thank you so much for your help!! Step 1 Please use the originals to copy books on to card stock. You will need to cut each page in half, and collate each book, to match the example. There are page numbers on the pages to help with collating. Once the pages are copied and collated, please bind each book. Step 2 Staple an envelope on to the last page of the book (before the back cover.) Step 3 Laminate the half page of words. After laminating the page, please cut out each word box. Step 4 Apply soft Velcro to the back of each word. If you are using Velcro dots, you can use one dot per word. If you are using Velcro strips, please cut the strip longways first in order to save Velcro. You can then cut by width into small pieces. Once all words have Velcro, put the words into the envelope. Please apply a Velcro closing on the envelope (like the example) so the words stay inside. (Note: The example book has the words stuck on each page. This is just so you can see how to book works. For student books, please put the words in the envelope.) Step 5 Apply rough side Velcro to the black dots on each page throughout the book. Again, use either dots or small cut Velcro pieces. There is a black dot on each picture, as well as 12 dots on page 11. THANK YOU!!!
