1 Congratulations to the authors and illustrators of our 2014 ALA Youth Media Award Winners and Honor Books! Kate DiCamillo has won the Newbery Medal for Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures. The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenthcentury British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. (Hardcover illustrated middle-grade fiction HC: E-book: $17.99 U.S. ($20.00 CAN) 240 pages Ages 8 12) Aaron Becker has received a Caldecott Honor for Journey. The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. (Hardcover picture book HC: $15.99 U.S. ($18.00 CAN) 40 pages Ages 4 8)
2 The Kingdom of Little Wounds by Susann Cokal and Maggot Moon by Sally Gardner were named Michael L. Printz Honor Books. The Michael L. Printz Award annually honors the best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit. In addition, the Printz Committee names up to four honor books, which also represent the best writing in young adult literature. The award s namesake was a school librarian in Topeka, Kansas, and an active member of YALSA. He had a passion for books and reading. He also appreciated the authors who wrote books for young adults and demonstrated this by initiating an author-in-residence program at his high school. The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. The award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library.
