5 Optional Activities Friday, March 13, 2015 ILLUSTRATORS DAY MENTORSHIP COST: SCBWI Members: $65.00 Students: $75.00 Non-Members: $85.00 With Loraine Joyner After registration for this activity, Loraine will assign a project and work closely with Illustrators Day participants on honing their artwork, creating consistent characters, and illustrating a picture book layout, which she will assign. This is an fantastic opportunity to work one-on-one with one of the most experienced Art Directors in the business. Slots will fill quickly, so register fast! (Must be registered for Illustrators Day) QUICKFIRE PORTFOLIO REVIEW The first 25 to register for this FREE activity will have their portfolios reviewed by the Illustrators Day faculty. Each portfolio will be displayed for the audience, and comments will be made by the faculty. Time for each portfolio is limited to no more than two minutes each. You ll be surprised how much they cover in two minutes. PORTFOLIO DISPLAY Illustrators who are registered for Illustrators Day or Springmingle may display their portfolios at the reception on Friday. Portfolios should be brought to the conference. Please do not bring original art. Join Meg Medina as she leads you through exercises to access your memories and find your authentic voice, story lines, and characters. Please come prepared with a journal, glue stick, old magazine, and scissors all to help us produce a personal zine. ONE-ON-ONE WITH AGENT KAREN GRENCIK COST: SCBWI Members: $50.00 Students: $60.00 Non-Members: $75.00 Come spend 20 minutes one-on-one with literary agent Karen Grencik, who will answer questions and offer individualized advice and feedback. Bring your query or your first page for her comments. Or bring your Facebook page screenshot and most recent blog posts for marketing advice. Or even get advice on your career bring your one-year, three-year or five-year plans as a writer/illustrator, your royalty statement, or even some recent personal rejection letters. Get some advice on craft or marketing yourself and your work from one of the best! (Must be registered for the conference or Illustrators Day). 8 Book Launch and Public Book Signing Friday Evening, March 13, 2015 BOOK LAUNCH Please join us Friday evening from 6:30-8:30 PM at the Decatur Library to celebrate recently published books by our PAL (Published and Listed) members. SCBWI PAL members who register prior to February 2 are eligible to register for a three-minute launch of their new PAL books, published in the previous 12 months, on Friday evening, March 13, The launch will occur at a reception which will be open to SM/ID attendees, faculty, local professionals, and regional librarians. If you have a recently published book, but do not know if it qualifies, please update your SCBWI profile, and if it is a self-published book, apply to SCBWI and receive PAL status in accordance with SCBWI posted procedures. Only the first 20 PAL members to register will be eligible for this activity as time is limited. To ensure that your book is available in the bookstore, please your book title(s), ISBN, publisher, book cover image, and publication date to SBreezeLaunch@gmail.com no later than February 2, PUBLIC BOOK SIGNING Only SCBWI PAL members and speakers who register for the conference by February 2 may sell their books at the conference. Location: Ground Floor Conference Room 1 Karen Grencik 101+ Reasons for Rejection In this breakout session, we will cover the most common reasons for rejection and look at examples of real manuscripts and rejection letters. The handout gives actual reasons for rejection, which is not to discourage one but to show the in-depth analysis that each manuscript undergoes. Despite astonishing advance in technology, no platform has come along that delivers the goods as efficiently and effectively as paper and print. Join Neal Porter in an in depth look at visual storytelling and learn how character development, story structure, and the almighty page turn still matter in a time of everdecreasing attention spans. 10:00 10:50 Keynote with Elise Howard The Small House Difference While consolidation of the largest publishing houses continues, there are many smaller, independent houses to consider when submitting your work some with long histories, others new to the industry. 13 Additional Information FIRST 8 There is no additional fee for this activity, which occurs only at our Springmingle conference. The first eight lines of a manuscript are submitted in advance for use with a faculty panel in a general session. Please submit your title, genre, and only the first eight lines of text as a word document attached to an sent no later than midnight, March 2, addressed to First8Lines@gmail.com. 14 Our Faculty Giuseppe Castellano is an award-winning Designer, Illustrator, and Art Director at Penguin Random House; with over sixteen years of book publishing experience. He oversees the imprints of Grosset & Dunlap, Price Stern Sloan, Frederick Warne and Co., the Penguin Young Readers, and Cartoon Network Books. Karen Grencik became a literary agent because of a man she admired. She wanted the world to know his life story, so she set out to make that happen. Double Luck, Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan, written by Lu Chi Fa with Becky White, went on to win The Parents Choice Gold Award for Best Nonfiction. Karen had found her passion in life and hasn t looked back. In June 2011 Karen joined forces with ex-random House editor Abigail Samoun to open Red Fox Literary, LLC. She currently represents both fiction and nonfiction children s books for all ages. Karen was one of the top-selling children s book agents in Bill Mayer, a renowned illustrator of exceptional talent and infectious good humor, graduated from Ringling College of Art where he met and married his wife Lee in His clientele includes most of the Fortune Five Hundred companies in the free world. With an ability to satisfy a varied range of business sectors, Bill works in illustration, advertising, design, character development, editorial, and consulting. He has won hundreds of national and international awards, reflecting his unique talents. Sessions: Life Imitates Art. 15 Our Faculty Neal Porter has been in and around the children s book publishing industry for more than 30 years, holding marketing, editorial, or executive positions at houses such as Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Atheneum, Orchard, Dorling Kindersley, and Walker Books UK. In 2000 he decided to step away from administration and focus exclusively on editing. That year he helped to found Roaring Brook Press, now an imprint of the Macmillan Children s Book Group, where he is publisher of Neal Porter Books. Authors and illustrators he has worked with include Laura Vaccaro Seeger, Philip C. and Erin E. Stead, Yuyi Morales, Nick Bruel, Betsy and Ted Lewin, Antoinette Portis, and Jason Chin. Books he has edited have won numerous awards including the Caldecott Medal, three Caldecott Honors, two Theodore Geisel Honors, two Seibert Honors, the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration, two Pura Belpré awards, the Boston Globe- Horn Book Award, two Orbis Pictus Awards, and over 30 ALA Notable Citations. Elise Howard is the publisher of Algonquin Young Readers, which releases a dozen middle-grade and young adult books a year. Previously, Elise oversaw fiction publishing at HarperCollins. She started her career as a book packager, creating middlegrade and YA fiction series. At Avon Books, she launched the first teen trade paperback imprint. Elise has edited many award-winning books, include the Newbery Medal winner The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman. 16 Critiques FORMAL CRITIQUES Cost: $45.00 Submission Deadline: February 8 Southern Breeze offers three formal critique options: Face-to-Face Manuscript Critique, Faceto-Face Portfolio Review, Written-Only Manuscript Critique. Formal critiques are conducted by conference faculty (editors, agents, authors, illustrators) or other industry professionals who may or may not be in attendance. All written-only critiques are conducted by editors or agents. Face-to-Face critiques consist of a 12-minute meeting with the critiquer. Critiquers are asked to use the SCBWI Gold Form to ensure thorough critiques. Critiques are only available to registered conference attendees. Formatting: Use 12 point Arial or Times New Roman font, double-spaced. Set margins at 1 or larger. The header on the first page should include your name, address, telephone, and . The title and byline should appear a third way down the first page with text below. Do not include any illustrations or dummies. Questions? Poetry: submit up to six related poems (no more than ten pages) Longer works: submit only complete chapters, up to 10 pages, plus a one-page synopsis Submission: Portfolios for review should be brought to the conference.
