In This Issue: Zinio Magazines 2013 Wish List National Library You ve read about long-standing publications, such as Newsweek, discontinuing their print editions in favor of digital. Thanks to the Friends of the, your local library is able to respond to this trend by offering digital magazines FREE to you, with your library card. Visit the library s website to find the link to Zinio where you can connect to the 37 subscriptions we ve chosen for you based on survey information concerning your preferences. You ll be asked for your library card number, then you must create a login ( addresss) and password. Select which of our titles you d like to view, and add them to your digital library. Once complete, you may view these selected magazines via a number of mobile devices, or right on your computer screen. An app is available for PC, Mac, 37 Current, popular magazines, available for your computer or mobile device. FREE to you, thanks to the Friends of the EPL! iphone, ipad, Android, Kindle, Windows 8 and Blackberry Playbook. Nook and other users can view the magazines via the browser. 2 F R I E N D S O F T H E L I B R A R Y 2013 Wish List At their annual meeting on April 4, 2013, the Friends of the EPL Board considered a list of items for the library. Among those chosen for funding in 2013 are the following: Zinio Digital Magazine Service (launched April 1st) Adjustments to the Children s Department circulation desk An Early Literacy Station for the Children s Department A desk and chair for the Early Literacy Station Interior signage for the library Lego League continues to bring new and familiar faces to the library on Saturday mornings. If you are looking for something to do with the grandkids, or a mid-saturday morning break, we invite kids 4 years and up to come build with us from 10am-12pm. Upcoming dates are: Note: No Lego League in May due to library being closed Digging Machines Amusement Park Rides **Spring cleaning and rummage sales are great ways to look for LEGOs to donate to the library** Page 2

3 NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK Tell Us Why You Love Your Library! This year, during National Library Week (April 15-20), we will issue our patrons a challenge: Tell us why you love your library! We keep statistics about every possible aspect of library service, but during this week what we want to collect, instead, are personal stories of how the library makes a difference in your life. Did you use the library s computers to apply for your current job? Does story time keep you from pulling your hair out when you re home all day with your toddlers? Have e-books made your suitcase lighter on vacation? Whatever it is that you love about your library, we would love to hear about it. All those who submit a testimonial, either in writing, by allowing us to take your photo, or as a video, will receive their choice from a basket of delicious chocolate! Public events going on during NLW are as follows: Monday: Story time with Paula at 6:30 pm Tuesday: Level I and Level II Computer Classes with Beth (pre-registration required) Thursday: Good Debt / Bad Debt: A Smart Investing program with Kathy Knudson of the Citizen s Credit Union, held at 5:30 pm (includes light meal). 4 SUMMER READING PROGRAM (ALL AGES!) The 2013 children s summer reading program theme is Dig into Reading! It starts June 3rd and will end July 13th and is for children birth through 4th grade, Fall Children will complete a gameboard vs. signing a reading contract as in years past to win prizes. Many activities are planned throughout the 6 week time frame including: programs by Jenna Pollock, Emmet Co. Naturalist, The ZooMobile from the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum, Lisa Laird and Pockets Full of Fun, Dan Wardell from IPTV, and another special secret guest. Crafts for both age groups will be held most Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings. Registration will be available close to the start of the event and can be done online, in person or by phone. Teen Summer Reading Program Teens are challenged to go Beneath the Surface during this year s six week summer reading program. Students in grades 5th-12th can have a chance to win an e-reader by completing a BINGO card filled with a variety of activities. Participants are also welcome to come to the library on Thursday afternoons for themed events. These will include Spy training, Minute to Win it: Zombie Edition, Stone crafts, Herb sampling, and an Unexpected party for Hobbit Fans. Adult Summer Reading Program Even adults will be invited to participate in the fun of Summer Reading this year, as for the first time we are offering weekly prizes and a grand prize drawing for those who fill out a slip for the books they read. Each book gives you one chance at the weekly drawing, and all slips will be included in a drawing for an e-reader at the end of the program! Page 4

5 WHAT S AHEAD. 2nd Star Wars the Library The will host Star Wars the library on Saturday, May 4th; from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to celebrate the story of one of the most popular sagas of all time. Come Feel the Force with Star Wars fans. Activities will run throughout the morning in the lower level. These will include Star Wars pictures to color, crafts, trivia, games, and Star Wars Clone Wars for all ages to watch on the community room large screen. Star Wars themed refreshments will be offered in the Sanborn Kafe. The library will have Star Wars related displays with materials available for check out. There will be a door-prize drawing at the end. We invite those in attendance to dress up in their favorite Star Wars costume. For more information on this special event contact the Children s department at Locavore 101: Eating Local CSA? Farmer s Market? Grow-your-own? Do you want to eat healthier or eat more local grown foods? How can you enjoy sustainable food while supporting local farmers? The has invited a panelist of local speakers to share about ways you can to eat local. On Saturday, May 18 at 10:30am in the community room, come meet and listen to Rebecca Masters, Britney Rosburg, and Ronia Klootwyk. They will talk about what it means to eat local, what to look for when shopping at a Farmer s Market, and provide resources to grow your own garden. There will be time available afterwards to answer any questions you may have. Page 5

6 So Many Events... Junk Bonanza Are you interested in carpooling to this gigantic indoor shopping experience, full of unique items collected by junk connoisseurs or created by artisans? Library staff members Paula and Tena are willing to take passengers to Shakopee, MN, and coordinate further carpooling if enough people are interested. The group will meet at the library at 6:00 AM on Friday, April 19th, and return at 8:00 PM. Pre-registration is required by ing or calling The library charges nothing for this event, but reminds participants that each will be responsible for their own entrance fee ($9 cash) and also lunch or other expenses. Those who missed our first Pinterest Party in February will be pleased to learn that we have planned another event! 7 Coming Your Library Good Debt / Bad Debt Have you ever wondered how credit scores really work? Do you need to know more about how to improve your credit score, but don t know who to ask? During this FREE program, Kathy Knudson of our local Citizens Credit Union will cover the basics about how credit works and answer the most common questions. All are welcome to attend this free program, and take part in the light meal provided, thanks to a grant received by Iowa Library Services provided by the FINRA Investor Education Foundation and the American Library Association. Join us Thursday evening, April 18th at 5:30 PM. Down on the Farm with the CCC Boys: A Musical Tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps with Bill Jamerson Michigan based author Bill Jamerson will present a music and storytelling program about the Civilian Conservation Corps at the Estherville Public Library on Thursday, April 11 at 6pm. Jamerson's presentation includes telling stories and performing original songs. He has performed at CCC reunions around the country and at dozens of CCC built national and state parks. The presentation is as entertaining as it is important; as honest as it is fun. It's about people both ordinary and extraordinary, with stories of wit, charm and strength. 8 LIBRARY HAPPENINGS Couch-to to-5k The EPL will once again offer last year s popular Couch-to-5K program in the summer of This year, meetings will take place on Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm beginning with June 6 and will continue through the 9 weeks leading up to the Sweet Corn Days Run for the Cob. We hope, this year, to shake things up by offering weekly prize drawings, and also by offering a walking group in addition to the running group following each weekly meeting (for those who are interested). We are still in the planning stages, but if you have an interest in improving your health, you are welcome to take part! This program is geared for beginners, and offers great information from local authorities on health and fitness, so the meetings are a great resource, even if you choose not to run or walk with us afterward. 9 SPRING COMPUTER CLASSES A total of 17 people are currently taking part in computer classes offered this spring. We have seen the number of laptops surpass the number of public computers requested in the level II class. Accommodating over ten laptops was no long feasible in the children's department. This class is currently being taught in the community room. Recently, KUOO Radio added this event to their Monday news broadcast. This has spurred more interest and so the fall waiting list has begun. My favorite question to answer when patrons are signing up is, How much do these classes cost?, in which I reply, FREE! Digital Literacy is a common term in libraries, in fact the American Library Association (ALA) website has a whole section devoted to promoting this and to help increase digital literacy across the nation. The Estherville Public Library continues to be a resource to improve digital literacy in the community by offering digital resources/databases, public computers, tech help sessions, and computer classes. After School Programming The EPL has agreed to partner with our local school system in an effort to provide homework time, healthy snacks and stimulating activities for students after school during the school year. This will be an extension of the existing Energizers program, currently held at the RWC. The RWC component will still exist on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but the library will be an additional site for Tuesdays and Thursdays. The program can accept a total of 50 kids from grades K-6, who will be at the library from 3:15-5:15 those days. Registration will happen via the school, and activities offered at the library will fall under a monthly theme. More details will be released as planning is completed. Page 9
