PASSIONATE VOCALS Making a big jump more Southwards, you will agree with us that Ivan's otonovela has one of the most catchiest Eurosounds at this moment. Another artist, though working in another musical direction, that should have your attention is Miguel Bose. His album Bandido is about to be released in some of the European countries. Not surprisingly cause this artist is able to deliver a sound that comes in the direction of artists like Peter Gabriel and Bowie. As single candidates from this remarkable album we recommend Amante Bandido and Sevilla. Before we move to Italy, there is still time to listen to the Spanish new wave band La Union with their latest Sildavia. Already tipped by us for weeks and weeks, it is a shame that it hasn't picked up any of response outside of Spain. 'z The first new talent from Ital utomatically come to our minds, and we you agree with us, is Loredana Bette. She recorded an album in London last year called Savoir aire. Her passionate vocals mix very well with the superb studio sound and there are some great candidates for your pop and rock programming in Ragazzo Mio and La Curiosita, And of course there is so much more coming from Italy, e.a. Gazebo with Telephone Mama, still not a hit elsewhere or the band iaggio Di Luna (Moon Ray) with Comanchero, already charted in Germany; and we all wonder will Raf's latest Change Your Mind make the same impact in the European charts this year? And an older one, Valerie Dore with The Night, Top 10 in Germany and a good example of a perfect crossover record. A COVER IN THE GERMAN LANGUAGE Their is not much product coming from Germany at the moment suitable for international appeal. Rolf Spinradts, very successful producer of Bananas tv show on WDR and executive producer for orme! Eins is presenting the first episode of his new program called Kaenguruh this week. He also introduces a new presentator to the German audience called H.P. Strong rumours persists on major programming changes at ZD. A new structure of the tuesday night first channel television presentation in Germany with lots of young 'audience' evening programs including fashion, food, tour tips, cinema and talk shows. Highlight might be a new show which in fact is produced by MTV which presents the newest videos to the German audience. MTV has an agreement with a number of major record companies in America for exclusive use of new videos for the first 4 weeks. And this could give ZD a long awaited hot new video program. The show might start somewhere in March and more news is expected on this soon. The show will probably be called Motel S and has involvements by famous producers John Landis and Steven Spielberg. Could be big news!! NO VIDEOS SHOWN The battle between record industry and television stations over the use of music video clips (and payment!) is still going on; presently there are no videos shown on national tv in countries such as Switzerland and Belgium where both sides don't seem to be able to find an agreement. While talking about Belgium, urotipsheet would like to give a better picture on the Belgian media and is asking top dj's and program directors to join the 400 other European correspondents we have. We feel that our picture on Belgium is the least real one from the 17 European countries. So please react! Sky Channel, the English based satellite program has changed the names for its musical programs into Sky Trax and are presenting a new Eurochart show produced in Holland. The last 2-3 months we welcomed some new correspondents in our magazine. Two very active correspondents from Norway, Bjorn aarlund and Jan Dalshow, are both working for Radio One, the free based radio station in Oslo. We also would like to say hello to Steiner ield, working for the 2nd channel of the Norwegian National Channel NRK. inland brings us a new TV show called Hittimittari. Pentti Teravainen also working for Discopress, the disco organization in inland, is now reporting to us the music and video chart of 'The Hitrneter', a chart voted by 50 people in provincial teams. As written in our Media Special of last year, more and more free stations are coming up in Scandinavia. or Denmark we have added two new stations to our growing list of correspondents, Lokalradio Heming and Radio Copenhagen. rom Denmark it is no big step to Germany where we welcome Ingolf Lueck as the new moderator for the weekly tv chart program orme! Eins. rom Munich comes a new private radio station called Radio C. They have a 24 hours non-stop program, especially aimed at listeners in the age of 15 up to 35, playing international rockmusic. They reach parts of Austria, Italy and Southern Germany and Willy Zwingmann, music coordinator, is reporting their tips and playlist to us. Hans Holger Knocke, former correspondent for DL in Cologne has moved recently to the WDR in Hamburg. SORRY (MY NAME IS CORRY) Thanks a lot Axel P. Sommerfeld for your recent letter. Major changes in Radio Bremen's programming are about to happen. The airing time for youth orientating programs will be more than doubled. The most important change will be a new show called Rizz, instead of the old Popkarton, which was voted the second best youth program in Germany several times. It will be on the air from 6-8 o'clock every day and it will feature the same concept as the older program but for the very first time a playlist is added too. There are also very firm plans to get the famous BBC 1 dj John Peel, who is also working for the BBS in Cologne, to do a show for Radio Bremen. Adam Zapletal and A.G. Weiland make this heavy metal Top 10 hitparade and it is an idea that should be picked up by other correspondents as well. or Holland we welcome Alfred Lagarde and Adam Curry, both working for Veronica tv and radio. Congratulations should go out to Swiss based Radio 24, the 24 crew raised together with their listeners more than 2,5 million Swiss francs in less than 2 weeks for the Ethiopean appeal. An initiatif that should be followed by other European radio stations. In this issue you will see on the tv page the contribution from Hannes Rossacher. Hannes, working for Mungo- ilms in Vienna, produces in cooperation with the Austrian O.R.. and Germany WDR his program Musikszene. This unique show will be transmitted by satellite to 200 different American radio stations. A new radio station is about to start off now that Maurice Siegell has just got permission from the government. The total budget reaches some 5 million francs a year... Another new radio station just started last week, called Hit M. A tape with 24 hours of non stop music is transmitted automatically the whole day, intermitted with news on movies, concerts etc. The station is owned by the chain of cinemas U.G.S. 5

LONDON CALLING by Howard Marks Things are still fairly quiet here in London at the present time, however, now that Midem has finished all the deals aredone, there should be some exciting things happening in the industry, News has come through that John Taylor of Duran Duran will be acting in a futuristic thriller for Yorkshire Television. This will be be a pilot for a possible series, it is not known whether John will appear in any of the other episodes. rankie Goes To Hollywood have their first ever London dates and Tears or ears who are enjoying chart success with their biggest hit for some time will be doing dates around the in the spring. Best known for his work with Soft Cell, and Marc & The Mambas, Marc Almond, will be doing a few select dates with a new band called The Willing Sinners, Also touring the will be Shalamar. New singles in the shops at the present time from Snowy White, he had a huge hit last year with Bird Of Paradise. Also a name from the past, who in fact I mentioned in my very first column, the wonderful Steve Marriott. I went to see Steve and his band The Packet Of Three, with a couple of mates just before Christmas, he was still great after all these years. By the way, my ears will be back to normal very soon. or a three piece, they are certainly loud. The single is a remake of Steve's first ever hit Whatcha Gonna Do About It. My favourite single at the moment is from 10 Records and is by Dr. Calculus, the record is entitled Programme 7. If this single doesn't chart, then there is no justice in this industry of ours. Nice to see Jimmy Ruffin back on the chart after so long with his new EMI release. Village People are back also after a long absence from the chart, the title of their new single is a little difficult for radio programming, entitled Sex Over The Phone, I hear a rumour that that is all the editor of this publication ever gets. Still lots of coverage for the Band Aid project, Bob went to visit Ethiopia some weeks ago, and did a round of tv and radio interviews to let people know what he saw, and also talk about future Band Aid projects. James Ingram was in town recently for some television and radio appearances likewise Grandmaster Melle Mel &The Gang, Hollands own The Limit where in too to promote their current chart record. Imagination have been doing the rounds of tv and radio for their current single which has been in the charts since November of last year. Nice to see CBS band King enjoying chart success after all this time. The band recently supported Culture Club at Wembley, and seem to be heading in the right direction for Some other new singles which are around at the moment doing well, are from Colourfield, Slade and also an excellent new single from Time Zone which features vocals from John Lydon aka, Johnny Rotten and Afrika Bambaataa. Congratulations to Radio One executive Johnny Beetling, who will take over the prime position of controller of Radio One when the current controller Derek Chinnery retires next month. Johnny has been with the BBC for twenty eight years and has been responsible for such shows as the Radio One Club, and the Radio One Roadshow which is very popular during the summer months. Johnny also by coincidence produced the first show ever to go out on Radio One in The government have now announced that local community based radio will become legal this year, however, pirate radio stations are to remain illegal especially if they take frequencies allocated to the new stations. Meanwhile, at Capital Radio, one of the most outrageous, funny, rude, lewd, sensational, etc. etc. Shows ever put on the radio entitled You Ain't Heard Nothing Yet, will be rested for a while after broadcasting 100 shows. It is rumoured that the last producer of the show was banished to an office in the Siberien Desert. The current producer will be forced to listen to Radio Moscow for five years, and the secretary, who has already suffered five breakdowns, will be pensioned off twenty seven years early. Researcher for the show Phil Swem was last seen nervously wandering the corridors of Capital Radio quoting catalogue numbers of singles deleted at least twenty years ago, and Jeremy Pascal who is the presenter of the show, was last seen smoking five cigars, all at the same time. Seriously I do hope that the show comes back soon. And finally congratulations to somebody called Gary arrow, who claims to have been in the record business for ten years this month. HOT MIDEM NEWS RENCH BATTLE VIDEO PAYMENT Biggest shock for the rench promotion managers came with the announcement that no more clips would be allowed on rench television after January 28th. Mister Sichler, general secretary of SNEP, the rench record publishing association, announced at a press conference that video clips on the 3 rench National Television Networks (with the exception of the subscriber station Canale Plus) would be forbidden. This is the result of top level negotiations between network directors and SNEP officers, officially representing performers, publishers, producers and the holders of rights. Both parties have negotiated already for 6 months and SNEP has now set January 28th as a deadline for a decision by network executives to accept minimum payment conditions for broadcasting clips. rench network directors, like in many other countries have maintained from the beginning that clips are promotional devices and therefore should riot be bought or sold. 6
