Life in a Box Thanksgiving - Library of Congress Project November 28, 2005 (Day upon returning from Thanksgiving) Look at a set of pictures all relating to Thanksgiving, some directly and others indirectly. Invite discussion and see if students think of Thanksgiving without introducing topic.

2 Group B Higher Level Photos introduced with little discussing except to explain that we wanted to know the children s observations. Teacher - Tell me what this picture makes you think of. Photo 1 Pumpkins discussion. I think of Amelia I see pumpkins. It makes me think of Halloween and decorations. Adrian Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving pie Andrew You could put some in a cornucopia Dean Christmas. You could make decoration with a light in it (thinking of a lantern) Sarah making a pumpkin pie. Jack I see the leaves in the grass and I think of fall. Estelle - camping. Photo 2 Dancing Native American boy with Turkey feather costume. Ben He looks like a person near a turkey. Dean He is trying to grab the turkey to cook for Thanksgiving. Sarah It reminds me of eating turkey on Thanksgiving. Jack Turkey Soup. I se the fake turkey wings. Adrian - How did he get them on? Kalena Maybe someone killed a turkey and glued them on General discussion on how to make wings. Mrs. Graves demonstrates Andrew - This reminds me of Pilgrim time Dean - This is really interesting. That boy, if he is a pilgrim who is in first grade would be dead now Mrs. Graves Is it possible that this boy is a real pilgrim? Look at his blue jeans. Discussion about cameras and origins of photography. Sarah Maybe a person in Pilgrim time passed on his shop where they sold those turkey feathers. Years later, someone bought them. Dean - How can a boy buy them? Discussion on stores and buying old things. Mrs. G. When did the Pilgrims come and how did they get here? Ben Jack years ago. Mrs. G. It was about 400 years ago. Sarah There was a person who lived until they were 110 Photo 3 B & W Turkey Sarah That reminds me of Thanksgiving. You see animals on a farm. General discussion on if it is a turkey or a chicken Photo 4 Colored print pf painting of the First Thanksgiving tableau Hannah This was painted. It looks like Pilgrims a long time ago. Dean They didn t have cameras or crayons.

3 Adrian Pilgrims were meeting the Indians. I saw a (reenactment) where people had to go and shoot their food and then put them on a stick over a fire. The people were dressed like pilgrims. Amelia? - (laid head down) Sarah It reminds me of Thanksgiving Jack It reminds me of Florida and Sea World This is print of a painting. Mrs. G Does the painting make you think of how the pilgrims got here? Do you think the artist painted water to remind you of this? Photo 5 Thanksgiving in present times Estelle This is the smallest picture Sarah It reminds me of the feast we had at Thanksgiving. Dean It is Thanksgiving now at a restaurant Discussion of house vs. restaurant Ben I think its time we are in. I pick pumpkins on the farm. Timothy It reminds me of pumpkin pie on turkey day. Cole It is squash. You can make squash pie. Cole - He s pretending to be a turkey Class walked around pretending to be a turkey. Mrs. G Where did they get the feathers? Timothy They killed it, ate it, then used the wings. Cole - They bought it. Mrs. G - Can you buy a turkey with feathers on them?. Christopher They went to a farm. Photo 3 Alyson Turkey! It s a turkey. T Yannei I saw one walking down the street in a parade. Timothy I knew it maybe the boy s feathers came from this turkey. Cole I m a turkey

4 Cindy The turkey is walking Timothy - /t/ /t/ Timothy, Thomas, T Yannei. It s Halloween Cole I think he is next to a bridge, no a fence. Mrs. G - Where would that be? Cole - on a farm. He says gobble, gobble. Thomas He s inside the fence. It reminds me of Turkey dinner. Timothy This fence reminds me of a tree. Christopher This reminds me of having Thanksgiving with my family. The following are the classroom teachers observations. The discussion expanded vocabulary with students using words such as cornucopia. The higher level students initiated a discussion of cameras and the origins of photography. These students also discussed the difference between a photograph and a print of a painting. A few students were able to verbalize that some pictures depicted Thanksgiving past and present. Students at a lower developmental level made fewer comments and were more interested in physically imitating turkeys. 4. If you were to implement this learning experience again, what would you change I would choose different images that might lend themselves to different learning levels
