1 November & December AMJ Today Cub Scout Pack 69 By: Josh T. This article is about my cub scouts pack 69 and some activities we do. We meet every month at Pleasant Dale school. In my cub scouts pack, girls and boys can join. In February of 2018, we participated in the Pinewood Derby contest. In order to do this you would need to make your own car out of wood and then enter it into the race. In the spring, we fish. When we fish, we learned how to put bait on the hook and how to catch and release the fish when we caught them. This past year, I got the whittling badge. In order to get this badge, I had to whittle, or carve, a bar of soap. If you like to do things like this, then Cub Scouts is for you! Teacher Spotlight: Miss. Schmakel By: Sade L. Miss. Schmakel is the Early Childhood Special Education teacher at Anne M. Jeans elementary. Here is an interview that I did with her: 1- What is your favorite color? - pink 2- What is your favorite food?- Italian 3- What do you do with your hobby? - Watching my kids play sports. 4- Where would you go if you go if you are on vacation? -Bora Bora. 5- If you could have one wish what would it be? - To always to be happy and healthy. 6- If you weren t a teacher what would you be? - Child psychologist 7- What is your favorite subject - Social studies 8- What is your favorite children s book? 2 E L E C T I O N D A Y By: Taylor A. Election Day is on November 6th. People have been voting since At first only men over the age of 18 were aloud to vote, but then in 1920 women over the age of 18 gained the right to vote. President Woodrow Wilson made that possible. President George Washington was the first ever president that was voted into office. The 2018 Democratic candidate was JB Pritzker. The Republican candidate was Bruce Rauner. Bruce Rauner was the governor in Illinois for 4 years from 2014 through JB Pritzker won the election and will be the new governor for the next 4 years. It was announced on November, New York City and Chicago Thanksgiving Parade: By: Myles M. and Jackson C. N.Y.C and Chicago are going celebrate a Thanksgiving parade on Thanksgiving day. They celebrate this day on November 22, every year. - Americans eat up about 46 million turkeys a year.

3 -The distance of the parade is 2.65 miles long If you do not know about the Thanksgiving Day Parade now you do! Goodbye Fall, Hello Winter! By: Julian G. Right now the seasons are changing. Soon all of the leaves will come of the trees, because here comes winter. But before winter comes you have to be prepared! In order to do that, you should get hats, gloves coats, and boots. You might want to wear double layers with clothes because with the snow comes the cold. When the weather changes the road changes too. There is ice and snow on the road. So be very careful driving so no-one gets hurt. And children may be alright with staying inside because you can make hot cocoa.

4 FALL CONCERT By: Taylor A. The fall concert was amazing. The teachers thought it was amazing. Our families loved it too. We didn t know what the kids thought about it, so we interview the kids on what they thought about the fall concert. Sade: I think the concert was very nice. I think it was nice because we did our best. Annabel: I thought it was very exciting yet scary. It went wonderful. Joshua: When I was up on stage I was scared. I almost stuttered and messed up my speech. Leila: I thought it was fine. I wasn t really scared i just didn t like the dancing. Teyanna: I thought it was pretty good. Everyone did good on their speaking part. Julian: I think we did pretty good. My favorite part is when I did my speaking part. AMJ Thanksgiving Food Pantry Turkeys! By: Julian G. & Leila W. Thursday before Thanksgiving people should come to the AMJ food pantry. The food pantry will be giving a dinner and it is really good! Almost everyone in the U.S. celebrates Thanksgiving on November, 22, 2018! Many people gather together on this occasion for dinner, and have turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, etc. The first Thanksgiving was on November, Their were 50 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans at the Thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving was made a National Holiday, thanks to Abe Lincoln, and Sarah Josepha Hale who convinced Abe to make it a National Holiday, in 1863 during the Civil War. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second to last Thursday in November. It all started when the Pilgrims came to North America so they could Worship God freely, and not how the king says, because they were being persecuted. So they went to America and called themselves Saints but they had to go back to England because they could barely survive there. When they got there they were sent to prison! In 1620 they went back to America on the Mayflower, and the Speedwell. On November 11, 1620 the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth! They actually were planning on landing in Northern Virginia. But the inconvenience of them getting to there in the winter was sharp. The winter was very hard but they got through it, with the help of Native Americans, because the Native Americans helped them they made a dinner for them, known as the first Thanksgiving! 7 1.White,Black,Orange,and Red Construction Paper 2.Red,Yellow, and Orange Feathers How To Make? 1. Make a short cone out of the brown construction paper.then tape it shut. 2. Cut out 2 White ovals and 2 small white circles. Cut out 2 smaller black circles.glue them together as shown in the picture. Then Glue the eyes on the Brown tube.final step glue Red,Orange,and yellow feathers on top.then you will have a cute little turkey! Need Paper Plate, Paint, Sponge, Paper, Glue, and Scissors Directions 1.Start out by cutting your sponge into strips.we se the strips to paint, but you could also cut chunks of sponge and use clothespins. 2.Prepare your paint.put chosen colors of paint on a plate and make sure to put a small amount of each. 3.Dab your sponge into the paint and then dab onto the paper plate.alternate colors until the plate is covered.allow to dry. 4.While the paint is drying on the plate,cut a body for the turkey from the brown paper.glue the body to the the paper plate. 5.Cut out eyes (or use googly eyes),beak, and gobbler and glue to the turkey's body. Then you will have a sponge painted turkey! Christmas Do It Yourself (DIY)

8 By: Sade L. So the first thing you are going to do is take some hot or cold water into a bowl. Then you are going to take some nail polish and pour the nail polish into the water. Then you mix it around they you take a ornament then you dip it in the nail polish water. Then you have it. Pretty christmas ornament. So the first thing you are going to do is take some pointy shaped light bulbs and then you will also need some clear brush on glue.then you will need one more thing some glitter (any color of your choice).then you will take the brush on clear glue then apply all around then you put the glitter then you let dry and your done. Christmas in Egypt By: Verena G. Do you want to know how some countries celebrate Christmas?? Well here is how Egyptians celebrate Christmas. They celebrate it by fasting from Nov Jan.6! That s 43 days without anything from animals, besides seafood. In Egypt Santa is called Baba Noël. The children hope

9 Baba Noël will climb through a window and leave presents! Merry Christmas is Eid Milad Majid, and Christmas is Eid Al Milad!! What Does Everyone Want for Christmas? By: Verena G. Out of hoverboard, Phone, laptop, morphboard, and a P.S.4, which would you chose? I asked 79 people which they would like. 23 people said they would like a hoverboard. 11 people said they would like a Phone. 9 people said they would like a laptop. 13 people said they would like a morph board. And 10 people said they would like a P.S.4! Different people like different things, but everyone likes PRESENTS!!!!!! Review of E-Rated Video Games By: Josh T. Hey reader here are some cool video games you can play that are rated E! There is Minecraft, which is when you build anything you can imagine! Your main goal is to defeat the ender dragon. I give this game a 4 out of 5. Next is Super Mario Cart.You can drive with your favorite characters and just have fun. You can also throw things or use them to get ahead of other people.. I give this a 5 out of 5! And finally Subway Surfers. In this game you can get money while being chased by a police officer and his dog. Then you use the money and buy characters. I give this game a 3 out of 5. Christmas Traditions: By: Teyanna A. In this article I will be reviewing the current Christmas traditions that families will be doing this year. One tradition is making a gingerbread houses. When you make a gingerbread house, you take cookies and frosting and put it together, then eat it. Another one is putting a tree up. To

10 do this, you get ornaments and a tree and put your the ornaments on the tree. People in America like to decorate the outsides of their houses with lights and sometimes even statues of Santa Clause. Finally, some people will put out cookies and milk for Santa to come visit their house and leave presents. Review The Grinch And The Nutcracker By: Julian G. In this article I will be reviewing the recent holiday movies, The Grinch and The Nutcracker. The rating of them is 4 out of 5 stars. For the Grinch, if you have seen The Grinch That Stole Christmas, it is a lot like it. People say its it is funnier but I have not seen it yet. I bet I will love this movie. The Nutcracker is such a good movie,i can tell you that because I have seen this one. The rating is the same. I love this movie. The Nutcracker is kind of a classic movie. It s about a young German girl who dreams of a nutcracker prince and his fierce battle against a mouse king with seven heads. It is set during Christmas Eve in 1830, in the home of a European city official. You should come and see these movies they are so cool. So come to the movie theater or rent these movies. 5 Facts About Kwanzaa By: Leila W. 1.The word Kwanzaa is derived from Swahili and translates to first fruits of the harvest.

11 2.The seven days of Kwanzaa celebration correspond with seven principles: unity, self determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. 3. Seven candles are lit during Kwanzaa-the first one is black, the second is red and the third is green. The remaining four candles alternate between red and green. Red, green and black are the holiday s symbolic colors. 4. Kwanzaa isn t a religious holiday, but a cultural celebration of African heritage and togetherness. 5. Traditional Kwanzaa gifts center around learning, so books about African heritage and culture are appropriate.
