3 SECTION A: SHORT STORIES Answer the questions set on BOTH short stories 1. The Soft Voice of the Serpent : Nadine Gordimer The very first time it was so strange; his wife was wheeling him along the gravel path in the sun and the shade, and he felt exactly as he did when he was a little boy and he uses to bend and hang, looking at the world upside down, through his ankles. Everything was vast and open, the sky, the wind blowing along through the swaying, trembling greens, the flowers shaking in vehement denial. Discuss your view (3) [18] AND Question 2 The Deep River: Bessie Head You have shaken the whole town with your madness over a woman, they replied mockingly. She is no longer here so you don t have to say any longer I don t know what I can do. But we still request that you renounce the child, Makobi, in a gathering before all the people, in order that our position is clear. You must say: 5 That the child Makobi is the younger brother of my brothers, Ntema and Mosemme and not the son of Sebembele who rules. Sebembele looked at them for a long moment. It was not hatred he felt but peace at last. His brothers were forcing him to leave the tribe. Tell the people that they should all gather together, he said. 10 But what I say to them is my own affair. The next morning the people of the whole town saw an amazing sight which stirred their hearts. They saw their ruler walk slowly and unaccompanied through the town. They saw him pause at the yard of Rankwana s father. They saw Sebembele and Rankwana s father 15 walk to the home of her new husband where she had been secreted. They saw Rankwana and Sebembele walk together through the town. Sebembele held the child Makobi in his arms. They saw that they had a ruler who talked with deeds rather than words. 2.1 Who is the woman referred to in line 1? (1) 2.2 How does she relate to Ntema, Mosemme and Sebembele? The air was heavy with odours of diarrhoea of unwashed children 5 with washed-out ribs and dried-up bottoms struggling in laboured steps behind blown empty bellies. Most mothers there had long ceased to care but not this one; she held 10 a ghost smile between her teeth and in her eyes the ghost of a mother s pride as she combed the rust-coloured hair left on his skull and then singing in her eyes began carefully 15 to part it In another life this would have been a little daily act of no consequence before his breakfast and school; now she did it like putting flowers 20 on a tiny grave. 4.1 To whom has the mother of the child being compared? 11 MEMORANDUM Question They are husband and wife Twenty six (26) years old It is used to indicate the unexpressed thought that the whole world is moving but he is unable to move trembling greens, the flowers shaking in vehement denial Metaphor The man is very thin and weak and therefore bent over curled up She had to push hard. - She is not doing particularly well. 2 - Her arms are thin. - The man actually thinks that the nurse may do better.(any two) Reading put his mind off the condition. 2 - Reading helped him to focus on something else other than his disability They both have lost one leg (left leg) 1 -They are both disabled and struggle to walk The man feels sad again when he realises that the locust has wings as an alternative to its legs. 12 QUESTION Rakwana / Makobi s mother 2.2. She is their stepmother 2 She is their father s youngest wife who secretly cheated with Sebembele Sebembele the new chief, after the death of his father, declared his love for his stepmother Rankwana and further claimed that Makobi is actually his son. His brothers are angry at his decision which implies that they lose their Position since Makobi will be the next heir She was forcefully hidden and given a new husband by the elders of the tribe To separate her from Sebembele who has customarily shamed the Kingdom through falling in love with his stepmother. They wanted Sebembele to let go of her and find a new wife Makobi is Rankwana s son/a product of illicit love affair Makobi s new status as Sebembele s son would mean that he is the next heir to the throne B.
