10 WE ARE TWO GRASSHOPPERS by MÄTJARRA How are you children? We are two grasshoppers and we live in the green grass. Sometimes we live in trees so that we can eat plenty of food and not be hungry. One day we were sitting at home, when one of us went off to a farm. He discovered vegetables there, so kept on going back. I said to him, Hey, where do you go when you leave me all the time? What have you found that is so good? Come on now, tell me. What shall I tell you?l just go and have fun, because all you do is sleep. Don t tell me that! Tell me how you come to be growing so nice and fat, just so that I know, in case anything happens to you. What can I do about it? He s such a good farmer. Yes, he s a good farmer because right now you re eating his vegetables. But when he sees his crops are spoilt because of you eating them, he s going to be angry with you and spray you with some insect spray and kill you. I m worried about my figure. I don t want people laughing at me and saying I m skinny. Do you want them to laugh at you and call you skinny? The first grasshopper didn t say anything more to him but just went inside their home. Again, (with other grasshoppers) he w entto thefarm. Itwastheday the farmer would be spraying. Hey, everyone, said one of the grasshoppers, do you think we re going to eat some nice grass today? The others gave various answers, but he (the grasshopper of our story) didn t answer; he was thinking of what the other grasshopper had said. They arrived at the farm and started eating. He hadn t gone very far into the enclosure, when the farmer started spraying the grasshoppers. He saw him and flew off, but it was too late; he had inhaled some of the spray. He got home, but fell down at the door of their house. The other grasshopper ran and saw him lying there. He touched him, but it was too late; he was dead. What I told you was true, but you wouldn t believe me, and so this has happened. So he lived alone. He didn t go near that farm, because he knew that if he ate his own food, he would be all right; but if he stole, he would get into a lot of trouble. 9
