Focus phonemes: ay (day, hay, nay), ow (below, show) ay (day, nay, hay) a-e (came, mane) Fast words: the, to, they, all, what, said, some, one, do Word count: 227 Getting started Write the words that feature the focus phonemes ay, and ow on a small whiteboard and ask the children to fast-read them, blending aloud if they need to. Review the following irregular fast words: the, to, they, all, what, said, some, one and do. Demonstrate how to say each alphabet letter name aloud as they write expect them to do it for all the words. Look at the title page together. Do the children think this is a fiction or non-fiction book? What do they think the story is about? Read the title together talk about the silent e at the end of Horse. Remind children that it is there but they don t have to say it! Reading and responding Give out the books to the children to read independently. Pay particular attention to how the children read the animal sounds: baa-baa, cluck-cluck, nay etc. Encourage them to say it in the style of a sheep, hen, horse etc. After reading the book, ask the children their opinions of it. Did they enjoy it? Which part did they most enjoy and why? Ask them if they have ever been too scared to attempt something, e.g. climbing a tree. 32 Returning to the book Look at the Farmer s Handbook on pp Discuss how the crosses and tick provide a quick at-a-glance way of telling us which things worked and which didn t. Talk about other occasions when this sort of checklist is helpful, e.g. when you go shopping. Refer the children back to the book and look at interest words like animals. Point out that most people say animuls. Ask them to pronounce the word with a regular al ending (like all). This will help them remember how to spell it. Checking and moving on Ask the children to think up other ways the horse could be enticed down from the tree, e.g. get the fire brigade; bribe him down with some food, etc. Encourage the children to be as inventive as possible. Role-play the different characters in the story. Talk about how the ducks, hens and sheep would move and sound. Talk about what Horse might have done when he got down from the tree. For example: he thanked everyone by holding a party; he went for a long sleep; he had a big drink, etc. Ask the children to draw a picture of what Horse did next and to write a caption for their work.
