Thursday Night Teaser Three questions just to lure you into a false sense of security Question 1) My first is in "Pea" but not in "Canoe". What am I? Answer - This was a simple "Google it" question, to get you used to using search engines to find the answers. If you had searched for the exact phrase you would see that it was a line from Frankie Boyle in Mock the Week. Either of those would have been accepted as the answer. Question 2) My first has a mouth but cannot eat. What moves but has no legs and what has a bank but cannot put money in it? Answer - Simple riddle, it was a river. Question 3) Clue was "Where am I?" Answer - Complete the next letter at the bottom of each tower in alphabetical order and it would spell out the word Chicago Question 1 - The epic journey I woke with a start and looked towards the pale glow being watched over by the two guardians dressed in black. I emerged and decided to head to the sound of trickling waters to freshen up before continuing on my quest. Before commencing the next stage in my epic journey I stopped by the old tavern for supplies and set off southbound. During the voyage I heard a strange sound and quickly hid behind a nearby tree. Quietly peering around from the hiding place I saw some sort of giant feline beast. I waited for it to pass before continuing east. Eventually I came upon a welcoming place where I could rest my weary legs before completing my journey
Answer - This was to get you out of your seats and going around the venue, though you actually didn't have to walk far. Each of the symbols related to where you would find a clue. 1 - On the lighting rig (lighting = pale glow, 2 guardians = Winbar & Murray-Mint) 2 - On the door frame to the gents toilets 3- The bar 4 - On a tree looking towards a big window sticker of a Cat (Brandies Bar logo) 5 - At the main building reception If you put the 5 clues together you got a saying - Useless laws weaken necessary laws. Question 2 - We are the Borg Answer - The clue here was in the round title to suggest that the actual resistance of the above chain is futile, so all you had to do was convert the colours to the standard resistor colour values which gave a number sequence of The number sequence was the first 20 digits of the e expression. e was the answer. Question 3 - Don't Get Board 2+3, 1 = K 4+4, 3 =? 2+6, 5 =? 5+6, 11 = E 3+6, 8 =? 6+5, 7 = I 5+5, 1 =? 3+4, 1 =? 4+6, 5 =? 5+5, 13 = R 3+4, 9 = T 5+6, 8 =?
Answer - The idea here was for you to play Monopoly (standard UK board) and we started off the game for you. The first two numbers were the dice throws, the third number was the number of the letter of the square you landed on. Complete the list and you have Kineticparty Question 4 - Veelednem x = ( ) Answer - Ok so this one was probably a bit too easy, unless you tried to solve the sum! Numbers were atomic masses, so if you checked the periodic table, you should have been able to spell out the word Lanwars using the element symbols. Question 5 - Pens Down There was also a hidden link on the page to direct you to a file called visualidentity.txt. The file said: FD 300 BK 100 BK 100 BK 25 BK 100 FD 25 rt 90 fd 50 BK 40 FD 20 FD 10 FD 10 Lt 180 FD 325
Answer - A visual identity is also known as a logo, and many of you will remember LOGO programming from school, maybe even using the turtle device. Many Win32 LOGO programs available online, so once you find one add the commands and it would spell out the word Llama. Question 6 - Et Tu Brute So here's where we turned mean! Answer - Image is of Julius Caesar and there is a number 11 within the image and the EXIF data. This should have lead you to a Caesar cipher with a shift of 11. The ciphertext was sneakily buried as a.rar file within the image. Run the shift of 11 and the answer was discombobulate.
Question Did you like this one? Didn't think so! Answer - The clue is Morse Code for 16, so you needed to start thinking in Hexadecimal. The image hex values only contained the values FF, 00 and CC which should have looked a little unusual. Then go back to the original title of Morse Code as a clue and convert the hex values to Morse. So FF = -, 00 =. and CC = boundary. This would have given you a Morse sequence of: Which translated to THEANSWERYOUSEEKISNEARTHECORE, referring to the core network. If you'd taken a wander over to the server area, you would see a console screen which had the answer sartorial.
Question 8 - The Final Journey Time to go walkies again. This one involved multiple paths and general knowledge! Who were the first to circle the moon? A. Frank Boreman, Bill Anders and Jim Lovell (10 - Go to BBQ) B. Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin (192 - Go to Performance Studios) C. Charles Conrad and Alan Bean (169 - Go to Maynard) Correct answer is A - go to the permanent BBQ structure in the camping area where you found: Who discovered Uranus? A. Herschel (10 - Go to Melrose) B. Ganleo (9 - Go to Sports Hall) C. Copernicus (8 - Go to Swimming Pool) cfry347 Correct Answer was Herschel so go to the building labelled as Melrose on campus. Robert Koch worked on: A. Tuberculosis (0 - Go to Wesley Centre) B. Cholera (1 - Go to Pavilion) C. Maleria (2 - Go to Students Union) Correct answer was Tuberculosis so go to the Wesley Centre (where you had breakfast) Bangladesh was created in A (113 - Go to Brandies) B (200 - Go to Brandies) C (1 - Go to Brandies) pk7vb4 As you were travelling you should have been noting the extra information on the clues which gave an IP address of This was a machine on the LAN which was running a password protected FTP. The two random strings were the username and password. When on the FTP you were given 2 files. One was what appeared to be a PNG file, and the other was an MP3. The MP3 was just a red herring (it was the Gummi Bear song, because I know you love it) and the PNG wasn't really. It was a text file which said: 2, 2 2, 5
3, 2 3, 5 5, 3 5, 4 5, 5 7, 5 9, 5 9, 4 11, 5 11, 4 11, 3 12, 4 14, 5 14, 3 15, 4 17, 3 17, 5 18, 3 20, 3 20, 4 21, 5 These were mathematical coordinates (along the corridor, up the stairs). Plot each of the values and you were presented with a Braille string which spelled out glabrous as the answer. Congratulations to everyone who took part and especially those who got to the end and completed the hunt! Well done! Once again we really enjoyed putting it together and can't wait for more of the same at epic.three Winbar & Murray-Mint
