Book 14 Part 2 31 Just like a word is made of letters, longer words are made of syllales. A syllale always has a vowel in it it s the vowel that makes your chin drop. You already know how to read some two-syllale words If you put your hand under your chin, you can count how many syllales are in a word your chin will drop every time you say a syllale. So, say the following words after me, and let s count how many syllales are in each word. (Teacher/parent note: Make sure you exaggerate each word so that the motion is ig enough to feel.) Today irthday A sister rother is my. and a. spaghetti pizza pie popcorn lollipop candy chocolate cat giraffe hippopotamus snake alligator elephant rhinoceros tiger letter A can t read a. And in this ook we re going to learn some more two-syllale words. Ready?

First, we are now going to learn more aout the letter y. At the end of a very short, one-syllale word, the letter y calls out the name of the letter i 32 yuh ellow fl i unn Usually, at the eginning of a word, the letter y says yuh, like in yes, yellow and you. But at the end of a word, the letter y doesn t have his own sound, so he calls out the name of another vowel, usually the letter e or the letter i. e My sister says that I must try my why, oh, why My peas are special see them fly, so someone tell me why, oh, why I must eat peas that fly, fly, fly? to eat peas ut?

33 But if a word has TWO syllales (two vowel sounds), the letter y calls out the name of the letter e Eeeee zzz z z zzz z z zz zzz When a lady it a ay the lady Hee, hee, hee. But when the ay the lady ug said, Eeeeee ug ee, ug said, ee it her ack, See sheep sleep on the hill. so they don t get ill. But do the sleepy slowly Sleepy sheep sleep slowly silly, sleepy sunny shine? slowly sleepy time. No. Slow sheep sleep all the sheep see

34 My head is heavy it is ready for ed. My head is heavy, and my I am ready for sleep; I am ready for ed rain feels dead. so can someone please pick up my heavy, heavy ; head? I was my ut my were all that I could eat efore my felt rather now I m was so happy with my candy, candy was good, twenty its of candy tummy funny sorry that my candy yummy yummy, good.

35 Rememer... Cheese and a It is can e sneeze can e sneezy. put pepper on your nose. And to make your put pizza on your toes. But please, please, keep the cheesy easy to e sneezy sneezy cheesy pleasy cheesy off your clothes., I know a lot of jokes I think some are I know a lot of jokes, and I tell them to But funny. my unny. my unny doesn t laugh funny funny funny unny he thinks none of them are Do I need jokes, or do I need a?.

36 Sometimes the y is silent and doesn t say anything, like when the y is right next to the letter a, like in say, day and play. always say I always say, please. always say every time I sneeze. But my dog, Sparky, says nothing at all my tummy and, let s play all. I, thank you. I, excuse me, except, feed, Maye a ay just pretends to e small. Maye a ay is not a ay at all. Maye a ay is a giant in disguise, with ig, hairy feet and yellow scary, eyes.

37 Rememer the naughty silent e? Well, the letter y at the end of a word does the SAME thing c-a-p cap cap e cap cap A c ap a a A a But if there are TWO consonants etween the first vowel and the y at the end, then the naughty y can t reach over and pinch the vowel. This is how you can tell if the first vowel is short or long making its sound (-a-) or calling out its name (AAAAA) O on n on onn (Bony means having lots of ones, or having ones that you can easily see. Bonny means nice to look at, good looking.)

38 Mary wants to marry Larry, and Larry wants to marry Mary But Mary is a dog, and Larry is a duck... So will Mary marry Larry? They will need a lot of luck.. Tony rode a pony all around the house. T Timmy was too tiny, so he had to ride a mouse. T Tommy tiny Tommy was ig. So Tommy rode an that is what he did. T But wasn t ; elephant

39 Katy Cat hates to e happy Katy Cat is always snappy. The one thing Katy Cat likes to do is frown, frown, frown at me and you.. I do not care to carry my ay rother, Harry. I do not care to carry Bay Harry at all. Harry heavy Bay Harry is not small would you care to carry a ten ton owling all? Because is so

40 So while it s a pretty good rule, lots of words reak it. We are going to learn some important words that reak this rule, starting with ody instead of saying oady, we say oddy Another word that reaks the rule is copy instead of saying coapy, we say, coppy If can Boy has a ody, Boy e a ghost? noody ody little Boy, No, with a, not even can e a good ghost or eat ghost toast. My rother is a copy Whatever I do, he has to copy that. I wish he would copy someody else I am the only one copy who can myself.. cat.

41 The word very doesn t follow the rule either. Instead of saying, veery, we say very which sounds like scary and Mary Bugs are not very scary And the very est ugs don t fly they crawl. A ig, lack ug that is very very hairy I call her Mary very at all. like my spider here; is so quick at crawling on the wall that I can never let out to crawl at all., Mary the fairy is very, very hairy. Mary is so hairy it is very very scary If Mary the fairy ever went ald, Mary would not e very scary at all.,.

42 The word every is a also it strange. Instead of sounding like very (ee-very), it sounds like ever and never. Every ook I every never every read is stuck in here inside my head. And the ooks come out to I wish I night when I go to sleep, read so tickle my feet. very ooks ; one of them is ad just take a look ever many I, go to sleep with shoes and socks upon my feet. I take my shoes off and then I turn off Then I jump into my and pull my But never ever every every every very night, light. ig ed lanket over my head. day, just after dawn, when I wake up, my shoes are on.

43 The words, any and many also reak the rule. They SHOULD sound like ainy and mainy ut they don t they sound like enny and menny Every I feel very starts to hurt. very it happens every time I eat a lot of dirt, sick my tummy I feel hot, and my insides urn I pretend to e a worm. time Many men in a long, long line. And many any of the were were there a long time. But were in the long line of the called Benny or Denny or Frankenstein? standing men many men

44 If I could have anything anything to eat would I eat any rice? Would I eat any meat? No, I want candy candy is so nice. Do we have any candy I can put on my rice? If I could have any would any Any pet at all pet at all? But I don t worry, I m not in any any pet pet e right for me? hurry, I will find the right pet when the pet finds me.

45 The work only also doesn t follow the rules instead of saying on-ly, we say own-ly I when I m I only feel lonely alone only feel lonely when there s But I am y myself, noody else. only lonely for a very short time, ecause my doll jumps off the shelf, and then everything is fine. Cindy Sue is so Cindy Sue got lollipops to suck. And though Cindy Sue is Cindy Sue thought only two, only two only only two was nowhere near enough. two,

And rememer, even though the word, one, looks like lone and one, is sounds like fun and sun The word, pretty, is another rule reaker. It should sound like Betty and spaghetti, ut instead it sounds like kitty and city 46 alone only one lonely I was all and the awake. and, so I made a chocolate cake. I thought I would have only one and when I was I had made only one only lonely lonely I was all alone only one only one ite... sliver... slice... finished I was glad that little cake. pretty Katy Cat was a, pretty kitty; a pretty, pretty kitty But no pretty cat can frown like that and still e pretty was she. to see.

47 Pretty means nice to look at ut can also mean quite a it like, he s pretty good, or it s pretty ig. pretty good at running I can run pretty fast Sometimes the y at the end of a word is spelled with ie I am so how come every race I am last, last, last? only one cookie left in the ag. cookie and the cookie looks sad. All alone, only one in the ag... Only one pretty, pretty sure, and it s pretty plain to see, I am that the people I am racing are all igger than me. There is I think I will eat it, and then it won t e sad.

See how cookie and cutie look like pie and lie ut sound different. And in the middle of a word, i and e together also sound like the e in cookie niece, piece Every time my dog does a trick, I have to call him,. But now he wants much more than that like candy or a What will I do when my doggy wants to get an apple? Do I lie and give him cutie cookie or ake my dog a?. pie cookies pie, My aunt told me that I was a a very Such a not a other nor a east, that she gave me a of a nice niece nice niece nice niece, piece cookie for a treat. indeed.

49 I and I I elieve in vampires, elieve in ghosts. elieve in monsters elieve vampire or a ghost elieve dancing on my toast. My dog does not in a ut I that he can see the monsters on my toast. The tooth fairy is a thief, thief, thief who comes at night to steal my teeth. I do not want that thief, thief, thief to take any more of my teeth, teeth, teeth so I put a padlock on my mouth to keep the tooth thief out, out, out.

50 The word friend reaks the rule, instead of saying, freend, we say, frend like in send and end We learned this in an earlier ook, ut let s look at it again. When we add an s to a word that ends in y, look what happens ay ai es I will a And my For me? Oh, my Then my will send my friend piece of pie. friend will say, friend send it ack to me, send friend so I can to my it again whoopee ay fly unny aies flies unnies

51 But if the y is silent (which usually happens when another vowel is standing right next to the y ) we don t have to change the y to anything we just add an s. One three, two, sat out in the sun with only one hat. The ay aies aies silly, frilly hat with puppies aies had to share their unnies and a ig, pink cat. and day key days keys

52 Most of the time when two vowels are walking together, only ONE vowel gets to talk. But sometimes, BOTH vowels get to say something e thief My cat says a lot of keys, try try tries the keys that she has ut when she,, to find them, never are in the house or in the car even the dog says he can t find them. i pie i e quiet

53 My dog is very when he cheats on his and he always tells a when he eats a He has gained a lot of eating ice cream and cake would he stick to his quiet diet, lie piece of pie. weight diet quite quiet if he wasn t so? I wish I was an I would e I would sneak up on a space ship, and then I d learn to fly it. Oh, I wish I was an alien quite quiet alien I would really like to try it.....

54 We all know words like BIG, BIGGER and BIGGEST. Well, look what happens with a word that ends in a y ig igger iggest hairy hairy hairier hairi hairiest er est My cats like to wear fancy, fancy pants fancy, fancy wigs and even fancier hats. Then they put on the fanciest shoes... fancier How can I choose? ut which cat is?

55 There are other words where two vowels oth make a sound words like idea, giant and video. Two hairy scary The scarier hairier tinier tries to crawl ut falls He falls onto a piece of pie, tiny tastier tasty Now all I want is pie pie pie, spiders sit on a wall. spider starts to crawl, ut the spider, the of the two, oo, hoo. takes a ite and says, Oh, my This is than a fly.,, I had a good my So I idea was tried to write it down, efore it was too late. But y the time I got some paper, a pencil and eraser, my idea great. idea great didn t seem so very, very.

56 Leo the lion is a liar, liar, liar. He said he saw a ird on a telephone wire. He said the ird flew up, higher and higher, then Leo the liar said the ird caught on fire. When I play the my cat sits on a and as my her It sounds so ad, like a piano, chair, giant wails fill up the air rain piano again. cat sings needle in the, so I never play so she never sings.

57 Sometimes the letter y makes such a small sound at the end of a word that you can hardly hear it, like in the words, oy and toy. Listen and then say after me Owen is a fish I wrote half a poem aout Owen The poem was so short that it only had one line a poem should e longer, my pet fish,. ut I didn t have time. toy oy toys oys

58 When I was a tiny tot, I only had one a fuzzy-wuzzy teddy ear with a ig, lue for. Now that I am igger, I have a lot of ut my favorite toy oy toys, toy for oy is my teddy-eddie. sleeping I do not like flies; flies annoy me. And I think that flies enjoy to annoy me. I know that I would enjoy my pizza etter if these flies would go annoy some other pizza-getter.

59 If the oy sound is in the middle of a word, the oi is spelled with an i. For example, oy and oil sound the same, ut are spelled differently here s how: Bo y Bo i Boil If a hungry monster wants to oil a oy, first he must catch a and put him in a pot. Then he must add water, salt, and then the hungry monster must wait for the oy oil oy to oil olive ;.

60 Everyody wants to the rand new ay It s ay this and ay that, ay powder, ay. But I know it s not a ay, it s really just a spoil oy. oil toy Boy I m the only one who noticed when they rought home Bay. I have a I use the I can make the I can make the Would you like to and make a Join coin coin in my for tricks coin coin join coin pocket; spin around; do flips. me, do flips? me now, we can have some fun I will show you all my tricks.

61 I like lots and lots of A drum and two sticks are the very est of But, oh, how it when I m told that I m too so I make louder on my noise toys noise. toys. annoys me noisy noise noisy oys for.... For dessert I have a of ice cream or pie. It s a very hard, and hard But in my head I hear a telling me to make no Yes, the choice choice choices voice choice voice tells me that I make me cry. must have ice cream WITH my pie..

62 The letter y is also used in a few more words that we should learn, like the word eye. In the word eye, you can hardly hear the y listen: eye. In the words, ye and goodye you can also hardly hear the letter y I go to sleep with one I don t like the dark, and my light is But I can t see a thing with the Is it eye that is open. ecause it is dark, eye or is my roken? eye open roken. I waved with a tear in my. I waved, and I said But my nasty, old cold didn t go away is here to stay. goodye eye goodye Bye ye,. -- I think my cold

63 You can also hardly hear the y in the words, uy and guy. What can I with one little penny? I can t much... I can t any ice cream, cake or soda pop... So what good is a penny? It can t uy uy uy a lot. uy I went to the store to ut the guy uy a cake at the store said the cake was late. But I know the was telling a lie, very own eye. why, why, why me uy, uy, uy guy couldn t uy I could see the cake with my So I asked the guy he would not let? But the guy guy didn t answer the ran away and I a cake until the next day.
