4 Welcome to the Prospect Playhouse and our production of Wit from which part of the proceeds will go towards Cayman HospiceCare. My message today is a cry for help. We need people to help behind the scenes at the Prospect Playhouse and in particular a person to take over from me as Theatre Manager next year. The theatre will be 20 years old this year and I have been Theatre Manager for all but 2 of those years and would now like to step down. If anyone would like to give their time and take the position over please let me know and I will be happy to give details of the work/fun involved. Thank you for supporting the Cayman Drama Society s Prospect Playhouse and we hope you enjoy tonight s performance. Peter Phillips Theatre Manager

5 I am very pleased to welcome you to the Prospect Playhouse, and our fi rst production of The subject matter of the content of this play is one of personal interest to me, having recently lost a dear close relative to the silent killer of ovarian cancer. By the time my aunt was fi nally diagnosed with the illness, it was too late for even chemotherapy or radiation, having originally been told she merely had a minor infection. From the onset of feeling unwell until her untimely death, it was a mere three months. The playwright, Margaret Edson s, protagonist in WIT, Vivian Bearing, Ph.D., meets the challenge of facing a terminal illness with courage and humour, leaving the audience feeling both enlightened and strangely comforted in the words of the NY Times drama critic. I sincerely hope that you feel moved by our production, and join with us in helping Cayman HospiceCare in any way you can. 6 The inspiration for putting on Wit was as a memorial to a dear friend of Sue Horrocks who died of cancer. Sue had this piece in mind for a couple of years and fi nally found the right time and place to follow through on it. As well as wanting to tackle the very diffi cult role of the central character, Vivian Bearing, Sue, with Dr. Ginny Hobday had well fl eshed out the logistics of the piece before I was, happily, invited to join the team as co-director. Margaret Edson s Pulitzer prizewinning Wit is a challenging play on many levels, tackling the subject of cancer with honesty and humanity. Besides Sue s exceptional interpretation of the main character, who is on the stage from beginning to end, we are very lucky to have an incredibly strong cast of supporting actors and a wonderful production team. Our producer, Sheree Ebanks, has been juggling many balls for us since December and we are very grateful for all her help and hard work. Many thanks to Ginny and the people at Cayman Hospice Care who have supported this project from the beginning. On behalf of Sue and myself, we hope you enjoy the show. Sue Horrocks Director Mary Anne Kosa Director 6

8 Wt ; Wit Margaret Edson WIT is the fi rst play written by American playwright Margaret Edson. Edson used her work experience in a hospital as part of the inspiration for her play. Wit received its world premiere at South Coast Repertory, Costa Mesa, California, in 1995 Winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Winner of the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Play. [A] brutally human and beautifully layered new play you feel both enlightened and, in a strange way, enormously comforted. -NY Times. A dazzling and humane new play that you will remember till your dying day. -NY Magazine. Vivian Bearing, Ph.D., a renowned professor of English who has spent years studying and teaching the brilliant and diffi cult metaphysical sonnets of John Donne, has been diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. Her approach to the study of Donne: aggressively probing, intensely rational. But during the course of her illness and her stint as a prize patient in an experimental chemotherapy program at a major teaching hospital Vivian comes to reassess her life and her work with a profundity and humor that are transformative both for her and the audience. WIT takes place in a room of the University Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Centre and is performed as a single continuous act, without intermission. WIT is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York. 8

11 AlicaAnne Brunn: AliceAnne is a clinical psychologist who teaches Behavioural Science and Ethics at St. Matthew s University. She and her husband, Dick, who is also a clinical psychologist, are most recently from Waco, Texas. There, in her other life, she was involved in professional opera and community theatre. Coincidentally, one of her favorite roles was playing Miss Hannigan in Annie. Sue Horrocks: Sue has been an active member of the Drama Society since arriving in Cayman in 1992 and has been involved in around 30 productions. She often lands the attractive parts of old ladies, ugly sisters, boys - oh and old men! The part of Vivian Bearing is a hugely challenging character role and one which Sue feels privileged to play. Emily DeCou: Emily has been acting with the Playhouse since October 08 with W;t being her third play since then. For Snow White she played a maid-ofhonor; in Annie she had two roles: schoolteacher, Hooverville-ite; and now in W;t she has three roles: Fellow, Student, and Code team Member. All plays she has done have been alongside Ashley O Neill. Sue Howe: Sue is a long time, active member of the CDS. Having just performed in Moon Over Buffalo, she is honoured to be appearing in Wit, her second play this season, and to once again be involved with such a great cast and crew. Peter Kosa: Peter Kosa joined CDS ten years ago and has both acting and directing credits, including Willy Loman in Death Of a Salesman. Recently he directed Moon Over Buffalo. Ashley O Neill: Ashley has been in CDS productions for the past 3 years: Mort, Snow White, Annie, and the most recent Moon over Buffalo. She returns again to the stage for her 4th year in Wit! Ranu Pande: Ranu is a newcomer to CDS. Originally from Mumbai, India she dabbled in stage during school and college. She heard about CDS from her colleague and was encouraged to audition for Wit and will be making her debut in this production. Adam Roberts: Fresh from playing a bewigged buffoon in Moon Over Buffalo, Adam was called in at the last moment, so sees himself as a Red Adaire fi gure. In that he is past it, no use in a theatre and technically dead, he is right. He performs his usual trick of performing two parts badly, characteristically both being fat and at least one having a dodgy American accent. Daniel Twist: Ever see the one where Charlie Brown performs a Pelvic exam... well now is your chance! Formerly CDS s Charlie Brown, Dan Twist returns to play the part of the self absorbed and dispassionate Dr Posner. Looking forward to playing the role Dan say s it will be a challenge to be part of such a serious and poignant story, but it s a play written with passion and for a passionate cause. 11
