Chairman's Message Hello and welcome to the Prospect Playhouse and the Cayman Drama Society s production of Rumors. Originally brought to Broadway in 1988 this light hearted and fast moving comedic farce takes us to the setting of a high society dinner party in New York City. This, like our previous production, Hairspray, sees another directorial debut with Paul Njoka taking the step from stage to director s chair. In Addition Adam Cockerill, as well as being a cast member multi-tasks by making his debut on the other side of the curtain in the role producer. We also welcome those taking their first bow on stage at the Prospect Playhouse. Paul s energy and enthusiasm for the production have been clearly evident at every rehearsal and has given the cast the ability to breathe life into every aspect of their characters. Regular theatre goers will recognize the veterans of the Cayman stage in the highly talented Michael McLaughlin and Rick Glass - timing in comedy is everything and is a hard skill to master which they make look subliminally easy. The fact that once again we have an excellent cast that gels both onstage and off translates to a truly entertaining and captivating production which, for those of us lucky enough to witness it, is a great bonus. As always I cannot go without thanking the backstage and technical crews who, although largely unseen by audiences, are every bit as important to making this a brilliant production. The same also goes for the hardworking set construction crew and the bar and front of house volunteers. To all, a big and heartfelt thank you. Well done to the entire cast and crew for an outstanding performance. Enjoy the show! Richard Johnson CDS Chairman 2012 Cayman Drama Society Rumors, a Neil Simon Comical Farce! ~ Page 3

Theatre Manager's message Since our last production, the Prospect Playhouse took delivery of new main speakers, a subwoofer, and a computer which controls the speaker system. These were installed by Malcolm Eden of The Audiophile Group. Volunteer Chris Anco set up the new Yamaha sound board to accommodate the recent concert by Melanie Ebanks Cocktails and Cabaret in support of the new black box performing arts block at George Town Primary School. Melanie s audience were full of praise for her and full of praise for the quality of sound in the Prospect Playhouse. These changes help to enhance the audience experience. But they do cost money. While I would not place our needs as highly as that of a child who is hungry, business patrons would do well to consider what the Prospect Playhouse does in the community assisting schools including our neighbour, the Lighthouse School. This does cost money since opening the Playhouse for an external event does consume power for lights and air-conditioning. And then there is the set in front of you. It was built by Joel Lawson and Hannah Philip, with some assistance from Alanna Warwick-Smith. Hannah Phillip (with drill) and Joel Lawson These student members attended a summer camp and learned how a set is put together from design to construction using power tools, ladders and man-lifts. Again, there are costs associated with this kind of learning event. When your company is considering your community service budget for 2013, please think about becoming a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum Sponsor of the Cayman Drama Society and help us to expand this vital role we play in the community. 6 Note from the Director One obscure afternoon in mid 1998, I was heading home to my parent s place after a week of intense college studying and met a friend who was on her way to an audition at Phoenix Players Kenya. Phoenix still is, the only repertoire theater in East Africa. We were next door neighbors and I figured I might as well give her some moral support. I somehow found myself roped into an audition I hadn t planned on attending, reading a monologue from an Italian play set in 1756 Verona. One call back later I had a bit role in a Luigi Pirandello play and I was hooked. In the period between 1998 and 2004, I acted in 45 productions and directed 8 plays in six of the most memorable years of my life. Throughout my time at Phoenix, I got to work with a number of talented directors. One man stands out from the pack as being the epitome of professionalism and attention to detail. It is only fitting that I dedicate this performance of Rumors to the late James Falkland. We laughed, we drank, we fought, we laughed again and I am who I am today because of him. I cannot thank the Executive Committee of the Cayman Drama Society enough to giving me this opportunity to relive what were the best years of my theatrical life. I hope you enjoy the show as much as I have enjoyed working with this cast. They are by far the most professional performers I have ever worked with. Sit back, relax and enjoy this fun filled ride. Paul Njoka Page 6 ~ Cayman Drama Society

Rumors, the critically acclaimed comedy by Neil Simon, was a longrunning favorite on Broadway, serving up 535 performances after its opening in The scene is set at the 10th anniversary dinner party of Charlie Brock, the Deputy Mayor of New York, and his wife, Myra, along with Ken Gorman and his wife, Chris Gorman. The kitchen staff is gone, Myra is missing and Charlie has shot himself, only managing to miss his head. He taken some Valium and was falling asleep when he fired. Chris calls Charlie s doctor, Dr. Dudley, but Ken tells her not to reveal anything. The doorbell rings and Chris lets in Lenny and Claire Ganz, also friends of the Brocks. Lenny and Claire have just been in a car accident. Lenny calls his doctor, who also happens to be Dr. Dudley. Claire and Lenny exchange rumors about Charlie and Myra, both convinced that one is having an affair. Finally they confront Ken, who lets them in on the situation. Lenny declares they should call the police, but Ken disagrees. Soon another couple shows up -- Ernie Cusack, a psychologist, and his eccentric wife Cookie. Ken goes back upstairs to Charlie s bedroom and a gunshot is heard. Ken calls for Chris, while Lenny distracts the Cusacks. It turns out Ken accidentally fired the gun, almost deafening himself. As the Cusacks prepare dinner, the final guests arrive -- Glenn (a politician running for State Senate) and Cassie Cooper, who have a very strained relationship. Act I closes as the Cusacks come out with a steaming dinner. Act II begins as dinner ends, the Cusacks and Coopers having been told the full story. Everyone blames Ken. Cassie tries to make Glenn jealous by flirting with Len, indirectly clearing Ken s ears in the process. A mysterious woman calls the house asking for Glenn. A police car pulls up the driveway. Enter Officer Welch, who is there to investigate Lenny s accident, but the evening s incidents unravel as the guests try to hide the real story. Officer Welch demands to see Charlie and a disgruntled Lenny tries to explain everything. The policeman buys his story and leaves the house. Happily the guests begin to troop upstairs to get the truth from Charlie but are delayed when an incredible development occurs in the basement. Rumors, a Neil Simon Comical Farce! ~ Page 7

Meet our hard working cast Ken Gorman [ Michael McLaughlin ] Chris Gorman [ Kim Plude ] Lenny Ganz [ Adam Cockerill ] Claire Ganz [ Teri Lynne ] Ernie Cusack [ Rick Glass ] MICHAEL MCLAUGHLIN Michael s extra time is usually spent as a volunteer cadet for the Spawning Active Conch Enterprise (SPACE) as they use time lapse cameras to capture this phenomena on the beaches of Cayman. Other activities enjoyed are the overuse of his operatic training as a baritone with spontaneous singing on household subject matter to the disgust and annoyance of close family members, and the constant expounding analysis due to NASA(Neurotic Aptitude Schizophrenic Alignment) of various subjects. Such as... why you should not park on the grass, or if a fly could lick it s hind quarters would it? etc. KIM PLUDE Kim Plude was pleased to pass the minimum height requirement of the Cayman Drama Society. Kim enjoys board games, but only when she s winning. Kim was voted Most likely to take over the world by her graduating class and she sure has shown them. She s also really good at Googling things. Ask anyone. ADAM COCKERILL Adam J-Fizzle Cockerill can often be found stuck in a doorway. He is often asked if he plays basketball, to which he d like to advise you no. So don t ask. Thanks. Adam enjoys the outdoors, wide open spaces and a good ear scritch. In his spare time he enjoys winning gold at the Olympics in various swimming events. TERI LYNNE BILEWITCH Fireball Teri Lynne is excited to be in her first ever CDS production after coming back from her mime world tour- she d love to tell you more about it but unfortunately her lips are sealed. When not on tour she enjoys fire walking, mountain climbing and lion taming. Keep an eye out for her brief but memorable appearance on So you think you can dance season 13. CHRIS SHERMAN Christopher Sherman figured the only way to get a large amount of people to pay attention to him was to have a large captive audience. However, having had no theater/ acting experience before this debut, it s yet to be determined as to whether this was his best course of action to appease his ego... Christopher otherwise spends his time between dreams of grandeur and greasing door frames so Adam Cockerill can get through them. ABBEY LE CORNU Abbey is in the witness protection program. continued on page 14 Page 12 ~ Cayman Drama Society

... they re such characters! Cookie Cusack [ Angela Harris ] Glen Cooper [ Christopher Sherman ] Cassie Cooper [ Abby Le Cornu ] Officer Welch [ Paul Njoka ] Officer Pudney [ Amanda Parchment ] Her favourite colour is yellow, because it s no one else s favourite colour and she feels sorry for it. If she had to choose a second favourite colour it would probably be orange. Abbey loves cooking, cleaning and ironing and greets her boyfriend with a beer at the door every night when he arrives home from work. Abbey s therapist told her she needed to make more friends so she decided to do this play... It hasn t helped. RICK GLASS Most everyone knows Rick and where he works and what he s been involved in the community since moving to the island in So he thought he d share some information about what he likes to do in his free time. He s an avid outdoorsman, loves gardening, dog training, mechanic, architect, construction worker and philanthropist. He loves to spend his off time climbing mountains, skydiving, working with NASA and the U.N. Peacekeeping efforts as well as a Democratic Party organizer. His only problem is he has no free time. ANGELA HARRIS It is widely known that Angi has no sense of humour so it was a surprise to some to see her audition for this particular play, the Director got extra kicks and giggles from casting her in her polar opposite as Cookie. A proud Brit through and through, it drives her wild to be in a play called Rumors, she insists on calling it Rumours instead and has therefore missed most of the publicity that s been released surrounding the play. Bless her she s not that smart. PAUL NJOKA Spring of 1976, darkness sweeps the land. The wizards knew something had to be done; gathering what power they had to create a child of pure Awesomeness. While this dashing and witty man is not saving the world or saving turtles, he works as a number cruncher teaching his clients life skills. The most common words to describe him are charming, wise, luscious, and vigorous. Paul is also modest. AMANDA PARCHMENT Amanda is known for her outrageous traits for over-thinking things and worrying about nothing and everything. Being in a Production where she needs to memorize things makes her nervous, she has the memory of a fish (do fish have memories?) but she is still excited and hoping she doesn t screw this up! The voices in her head are very helpful with memorizing lines but sometimes they just make them more complicated No Master Yoda the force is not with her. Page 14 ~ Cayman Drama Society
