7 Context Ciaran Carson was born in 1948 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and he is very much a son of the city. Belfast Confetti (1990) describes the fear and confusion of an explosion in Belfast. The poem is set during the troubles in Northern Ireland that took place in the latter years of the twentieth century. The title of the poem initially suggests a celebration, but the phrase Belfast Confetti pre-dates the poem and refers to the screws, bolts and nails that were placed in IRA bombs as shrapnel.

9 Starts in the middle of the action Belfast Confetti METAPHOR shows sense of alarm Suddenly as the riot squad moved in it was raining exclamation marks, Nuts, bolts, nails, car-keys. A fount of broken type. And the explosion Itself an asterisk on the map. This hyphenated line, a burst of rapid fire I was trying to complete a sentence in my head, but it kept stuttering, All the alleyways and side streets blocked with stops and colons. ONOMATOPOEIA reflects the sound of the gunfire and the speaker s fear METAPHOR suggests broken metal and the failure of words to describe the situation. * Shape of the explosion Suggests he s trying to escape but cannot

10 Mythological maze, highlights the fact that he knows the streets but he is still lost because of the chaos. I know this labyrinth so well Balaklava, Raglan, Inkerman, Odessa Street Why can t I escape? Every move is punctuated. Crimea Street. Dead end again. A Saracen, Kremlin-2 mesh. Makrolon face-shields. Walkietalkies. What is My name? Where am I coming from? Where am I going? A fusillade of question-marks. It s as tough he is being assaulted by questions. This also highlights his feelings of confusion. Implies he s having these questions shouted at him. Implies violence and hesitation. He s surrounded by communication from security forces.
