3 1. Mario is doing a report on hummingbirds. He found the following information in a book. Hummingbirds are the smallest species of bird known to man. The most common hummingbird found in the Eastern part of the United States is the ruby-throated hummingbird. This hummingbird has feathers of a glittering green color, and males have a deep red throat. Hummingbirds have long, slender bills and specialized, tube-shaped tongues. They use these for extracting nectar from flowers. Hummingbirds are known for their ability to hover in flight. They can quickly move forward or backward. Their wings can beat at a rate of 90 beats per second, so fast that they often look like a blur. This fast wing movement creates a humming sound that gives this bird its name. Hummingbirds feed on nectar and tiny insects from flower blossoms. They will often visit special birdfeeders filled with honey or sugar water, and since they are attracted by the color red, many people color their sugar water red with food coloring. Notes Hummingbirds are the smallest birds known to man. Hummingbirds have long bills for gathering nectar. Their wings can move as fast as 90 beats per second.
