1 11. Display Ideas / Contests / School Promotion Display Ideas Using a large cardboard box (a refrigerator box works nicely), paint or draw a funny scene/characters on the outside of the box. Cut away a hole where the face is that is big enough for an adult to place their face in. Set it up in the children s area and wait for the giggles to pour in! Using a large display space, create a Joke or Riddle Wall. Take a piece of coloured paper and fold it in half so it resembles a greeting card. Write the question part of the joke/riddle on the front of the card, with instructions to turn the page. On the inside of the card, write the answer to the joke/riddle. To make the display even more interactive, ask kids to submit their own joke/riddle cards, or create them together as part of a program. Using large pieces of paper, write a single riddle on each sheet and display around the children s department/library. To create a contest from this concept, number each riddle and ask children to try to guess the answers to each. Joke & Cartoon Happy Face Board - Have each child that enters write their name on a brightly coloured Happy Face. Place on a bulletin board and intersperse with jokes in bubbles and cartoons cut out of papers (also mounted on coloured paper). Knock-Knock Door - If your library does not have an actual door to designate as your "Knock-Knock Door," then a door could be crafted out of construction paper and placed on a wall or bulletin board. On the door, would be a sign: "Knock-Knock Door" and onto it could be attached a collection of knock-knock jokes. The library could have paper available so that children could write out their own favourite knock-knock jokes and add them to the door. The activity of children writing out their jokes and adding them to the door could also be incorporated into a program. Many books with knock-knock jokes are available to help inspire everyone. Choose four or five emoticon images from the clipart. Have the children put their names on a face of their choice when they register and put the face up on a bulletin board. Intersperse the board with jokes in colourful bubbles and cartoons and comics mounted on brightly-coloured paper. A dark background will highlight all the faces, bubbles and cartoons. This easy-to-do display will be bright and cheery and children will enjoy reading all the jokes and cartoons. Funny book suggestions and SRC program information could also be included in the bubbles. 160

Engaging the children in the presentation is a good way to keep their attention. Cootie catchers Create a large cootie catcher" to introduce the SRC poster. You can use the questions in the activity book to put into the catcher. Or you can make up your own questions. 161

3 Forgotten how to fold them? Try this site. Participation stories These take a little longer to prepare and do but are a big hit. Check for ideas. Most of them are funny. There are also some in the program part of the manual. Joke Jars Create a funny looking joke jar and ask the kids to read some jokes out. Funny Clothes You can go all out and dress as a clown or just wear a funny hat. Alternatively, bring clothes to dress the kids up. Poetry There is a lot of funny poetry to read aloud. Check the booklists or choose some of your favourites. Skits Take a look here: for some skits to use as is or re-write. 162

4 Guess the number of Contest Ideas Your library may choose this contest as an incentive to attract members. For little expense, you can fill a container with jelly beans, or jokes, or something else of your choosing that complements the theme. (Candy does seem to work well). As an example, I am using "Jumping jelly beans" in a jar. Every child who registers for the SRC gets a ballot to guess the number of jelly beans in the jar. At the end of the summer, the child with the guess closest to the correct answer wins the jar. A sheet of ballot forms has been created using "Jumping jelly beans," but feel free to adapt it to your own library's needs. Caption this Find a funny picture or draw one of your own and have the kids come up with their own caption for the photo or picture. (See Children's Magazines like Owl and Faces for some examples.) The funny picture can either be produced as an individual handout or done in a large format and posted on a bulletin board. If you are doing individual photos, select a few runners-up and post them in your library; let the public vote for which is the funniest by posting smiley faces next to their favourite. If you have made a large size picture, rotate the runners-up by posting the captions on large speech or thought bubbles on the bulletin board with the picture. Library Daily The Library Daily is a great way to let the budding young artists and cartoonists in your community show their talents. This contest can be used to create a display as well as encourage children to participate in the SRC activities. 163
