Body Language Advice From an FBI Agent and Harvard Social Psychologist

When our stomach has butterflies fluttering inside, the last thing our mammalian brain does by default is think SMILE!!! Yet it's proven that forcing a smile works. In fact, studies have revealed that forcing a smile results in a lowered heart rate, thus reducing stress.
Power posing raises testosterone levels (i.e. increases confidence) and lowers cortisol levels (i.e. reduces stress), hacking our brain to feel more powerful.
"Hand steepling" is when we spread our fingers, pressing them together in a prayerlike gesture. It's a high-confidence display, used by people such as Donald Trump
A common display of power is interlacing our fingers and keeping our thumbs pointed up toward our face. This is a body language sign projects confidence and power,

Neck or face touching is the adult equivalent of toddlers sucking their thumb Men touch their faces, necks, and arms. Women touch their necks, clothing, jewellery (particularly if they have a necklace), arms, and stroke their hair. All of these pacifying behaviours demonstrate insecurity and limited confidence.
According to FBI agent Joe Navarro, when we press our lips together to the point they almost seem to disappear, that's our mammalian brain giving signal to not let anything else in our body. Because we're so consumed with a stressful situation

Anglo-Dutch Translation Guide What the British say Could we consider some other options? What the British mean I don t like your idea. What the Dutch understand They have not yet decided. I ll bear it in mind I will do nothing about it. They will probably do it. Please think about that some more It s a bad idea: Don t do it. It s a good idea: Keep developing it. I m sure it s my fault, but It is your fault! It was their fault. I almost agree That is an original / challenging point of view I don t agree at all. You must be crazy. He s not far from agreement. They like my ideas! You ll get there eventually You don t stand a chance in hell. Keep on trying for they agree I m heading in the right direction.

Keep it Simple!
If you want to be known for clear communication, avoid words like: Ø I ll try Ø Maybe Ø Should have Ø Must Ø Always Ø Never

Successful influencing means getting a result which meets the legitimate needs of both sides.

Own up. Publicly recognise your own mistakes and weaknesses. Rather than diminish your authority, it shows that you have the integrity to look at things for what they are. Be fair. Treat all your people equally and as fairly as possible. Rigorously establish and enforce principles of procedure
Champion the cause. Emphasise the correctness and desirability of your objectives. Trust. Show belief in your team
Stick to your guns. Hold on to a position you know is right, even in the face of opposition.
Who s got the hardest job?

What you see/hear at first is only the tip of the iceberg What people want and need is often not the same The deeper you dig, the more you ll find in common Our skill as negotiators is to get people below the line They won t go there unless you do
A B Power is key I want I want I need I need Creative solutions are key Shared Needs/ Interests Common Ground
