2 MOBY MICK The whale he d come to conquer, swallowed him whole, plunging him deep into the depths of the sea of all stories. Somewhere lurking in this endless ocean of notions, there may still swim our monstrous whale. A sort of Moby Dick if you will. Or maybe a whale entirely different, but a leviathan none the less, and inside him sits our man, patiently awaiting his incertain outcome from this great lonely beast that swallowed his every essence those so many years before. Now imprisoned inside this living bubble of blubber, time ticks past him incessantly, like a clock with no purpose. Will he ever escape? Or rather, will he spend the rest of his days the figment of someone s imagination, a living myth; dreaming of life as it was before? Only time will tell, and in the mean time he might as well try to enjoy himself, but it isn t always easy. One s comfortability inside the belly of a glorious whale, ebbs and flows not unlike the sea that contains them both. Some days are better than others, and at times he faintly accepts that maybe he s better off giving in to the protection of the whale with which contains him. Five star hotel or pungent emptiness, It s simply a matter of perspective. Almost forgotten, and floating in limbo between the living, and the dead, the rumbling of his situation echoes throughout the sea. Will he remain, or will he escape? Either way, does he have a choice? Only he and the whale can decide, only time will tell, and only the sea of stories knows his fate.

3 The possibility for peril in his situation is unquestionable, and the belly of the whale has often represented a great and mysterious danger. In Joseph Cambell s description of the Hero s Journey entering the belly of the whale is a metaphor for confronting one s inner self. It s similar to one entering into the dragon s lair to face the dragon, and accepting one s futility. Slaying the dragon is the destruction of ego, and returning from this living Abyss is congruous to being reborn. He who He was before entering the womb is not the same person at the end of the journey. The transformation may not be externally visible, but our hero is unquestionably reconfigured.

4 This show is directly related to my relationship to my self, and to my clown. The whale is the living representation of my self. The whale s belly is my belly, and the clown I have already developed is his body. He is Moby Mick, but inside his belly, there is yet another individual, and this is the clown we will see on stage. As if seen through a magic magnifying glass we will look into the belly of this whale to see the clown waiting to be freed from his inner prison. He is not a different clown, he is simply an extension of myself, and the whale that he inhabits. They are inseperable. He is the enfant libre, and this show is about the meeting of these two clowns through the metaphor of the whale, and the clown sailor who was consumed by the whale he thought he could conquer.

5 The clown himself for this show will be inspired by the life & traditions of sailors from various maritime cultures. Hardened by the sea, bitter from his situation, and somewhat grumpy, this will be our ground work for this clown. But underneath this man made of leather, and hard labor lies the inner essence of his being. His enthusiasm is sleeping, but it is longing to be awoken. His inner folly just begging to be unleashed. Once free, he is the enfant libre. And this show is dedicated to his liberation. This is where I come in to the picture!

6 Now Entering center stage: Mick Holsbeke In this show I will call upon my last 15 years of Clown & Circus training to create a show that is rich in humor, absurdity, and physicality. I m going to utilize my skills as a clown, pantomime, juggler, acrobat, dancer, and musician to poke fun at the core of the human condition, and our current disconnect not only from nature, but ultimately from ourselves. I m going to weave together these various disciplines to create a character lost inside the folly of his situation, and thus also lost inside himself, but ultimately free to do as he chooses. Free to do, say, or act however he pleases. Free to be wild, free to be ridiculous, and free to be extreme. Free to simply be in whatever form he chooses. The solitude of this place permits him all actions, and permits all behaviors. Inside the belly of a whale only he is the judge of just how far he can go before going too far.

7 Or so he thinks.

8 Moby Mick is always watching, quietly observing our hero s every move, and ready to intervene if ever our friend goes overboard. (no pun intended) And a mighty whale, he is, in deed!

9 So what will Moby Mick look like anyways? And how will I evoke the belly of this great whale? The basic idea is to create a set design that will speak for itself, and then enhance illusion with lighting, sound, and the mobility of the tissue structure surrounding the ribcage, and spinal column. These are some images to help the imagination,

10 ,but of all the photos these last two express most clearly the environment that I imagine for the moment. A cold and desolate cave that draws you further, and further into it s depths. With the ribcage themselves the prison walls, and the spinal column extending out over the public destroying the 4th wall, and creating a bridge between the stage, and the spectator.

11 This collosal column, not only being the bridge, but also the perfect setup for circus antics, and hanging circus apparatus. In the midst of a storm, when the belly of the whale is being jostled like a rag doll our sailor might climb out over the public shouting sailor s orders as if the ribcage of Moby Mick is the Whaling ship he once sailed. BATON DOWN THE HATCHES! ALL HANDS ON DECK!! THERE SHE BLOWS!!

12 Enter lieutenant Dan photo And if everything goes as planned, plus a little luck, maybe someday the public will enter through the mouth of this gigantic whale, into a custom made circus tent depicting the whale which contains our clown! Moby Mick takes on a whole new dimension!

13 But first things first! WHEN, AND HOW, WILL THIS PROJECT COME IN TO FRUITION?
