They also tell what point of view a story is written from. First Person Point of View A character is telling the story. The character is in the story and is eperiencing the action. Third Person Point of View A narrator is telling the story. The narrator is not in the story, but is telling what is happening. 28 2 Section A: Reading Here is part of the story But You Promised You d Choose Me by Bel Mooney. Read it and then answer the questions on the question paper. There was a new girl in Kitty s class. She was called Rosie and she was very nice. On her first day she was put net to Kitty, who had to show her where everything was. They quickly became friends. Rosie had short black curly hair and laughed a lot. Very soon the teacher discovered that she was clever in lessons, as well as good at games. 5 Oh, Rosie, you re so lucky, Kitty sighed one day, because you re good at everything! It s not luck, Rosie said with a grin. It s hard work! Rosie and Kitty did everything together. They shared their biscuits at break, swapping books they liked and chose each other as partners in gym and dancing. 10 Will you always choose me, Rosie? Kitty asked. She was feeling rather proud because her friend was better than all the rest. Course I will, silly. Promise? 15 With all my heart, I promise. Kitty had always wanted a really best friend. It didn t matter that Rosie was a faster runner, or could dive like a fish. They were friends. That was more important than anything. Or so Kitty thought until the week before sports day. 20 Kitty didn t like sports day. Kitty complained to her mum, It s no fun running a race and seeing all the others in front of you. What does it matter as long as you do your best? questioned Mum. Huh my best isn t good enough! growled Kitty. Now the class was practising for all the events. 54 3 When a myth is told, it is usually seen as true for that society. However, some societies classify their myths as those that are true stories and those that are false stories or fables. There are also creation myths which took place in an age when the world did not have human beings, and these myths then talk about how the world and its inhabitants were first formed. Some myths are allegories, which mean they stand for something else. For eample, in some of the Greek myths, you have creatures like Apollo who represents fire, and Poseidon who represents water, and so on. In other myths, the allegories represent philosophical or spiritual concepts. For eample, you have Athena who represents wise judgment. Some people think that myths resulted from the personification of inanimate objects and forces. That would mean that the things that are not real take on real-life characteristics. For eample, fire and air would be real, etc. Some people think that myths were created to eplain rituals, which are repeated acts like baptism or marriage. Sue Peterson 2012

Unicorns are mythical creatures that look like horses with a horn coming out of their foreheads. Unicorns are a beautiful animal, usually described as having great intelligence and a gentle wisdom that humans may not understand. Often the unicorn is a creature of divinity, pure of heart and spirit that may be possessed of incredible powers of both creation and healing. Susan looked at the clock. Butterflies do not give birth to live young and the caterpillar looks very very different from the adult butterfly. When females have been fertilised by the male butterfly, she looks for a safe place to lay her eggs and this is usually under a leaf. The eggs slowly grow into the baby caterpillars which once formed hatch out of the eggs. Then the caterpillars eat and eat lots of leaves to grow read for the net stage. This is when the caterpillar will wrap itself inside their own pod called a chrysalis. Inside this chrysalis the caterpillar transforms from the podgy grub into the beautiful butterfly and the caterpillar has then matured into the adult.
