1 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: FALL 2015 Celebrating the Thirtieth Anniversary Season 2016 Notes from Raymond Caldwell, Festival Artistic Director This coming summer we celebrate the Festival s 30th Anniversary. Last summer was our 30th season, meaning that it was the 30th summer of our existence, but this year marks our thirtieth year of operations was the Festival s first season, but we could not celebrate its first anniversary until a year later, in Consequently, since TSF was born in 1986, we celebrate our 30th birthday or anniversary this summer! We hope to mark this milestone by creating some interesting displays for the lobby of the theatre, soliciting recorded comments from selected TSF alumni, and persuading the Governor to write a congratulatory letter to be printed inside the playbill. In addition, we plan to launch a 30/30 Campaign, asking patrons to donate $30 to have their TSF Road Show...2 Before the Curtain Rises...3 Upstairs Space Evolves...3 Out of the Darkness...3 Gift Festival Tickets...3 World of Wonders...3 Sponsor an Intern...4 Book of Luke...4 Radio Play...4 TSF Foundation...4 Wish and Dream...5 Truly Significant Friends...5 TSF Season Stats...5 Green Group...6 Executive Board...6 names printed inside a giant Happy Anniversary card to be displayed in the foyer this summer. Interestingly enough, 2016 is also the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare s death in 1616, but I think it may be a stretch to launch a 400/400 Campaign. Don t you agree? I will hasten to add, however, that if someone wishes to honor the Bard with a $400 donation, we will graciously accept it! Presenting the 2016 Season The Merchant of Venice The Festival will open its 30th Anniversary season with one of Shakespeare s most interesting and controversial romantic comedies, The Merchant of Venice. Over the past 400 years, Merchant has most often been remembered for the character of Shylock, the vengeful money lender who demands a pound of flesh from Antonio when he cannot repay a loan. The intensity of the conflict between Shylock and Antonio (who is the actual Merchant of Venice, by the way), always overshadows the romantic comedy that occupies most of the play the love that Portia feels for Bassanio and the lengths to which she goes to win his heart. According to Leslie Reidel, a Shakespearean scholar and professor at the University of Delaware who is directing our production this summer, the romance of the play needs to The quality of mercy is not strain d; It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest; It blesseth him that gives and him that takes: Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes The throned monarch better than his crown It is enthroned in the hearts of kings, It is an attribute to God himself. reclaim its rightful place in performance, and the historic controversy over Shakespeare s supposed anti-semitism should be downplayed. Regardless of his religion, Shylock is a villain, Reidel says. Yes, he is unjustifiably tormented and abused by the Christian, or non-jewish, society he lives in, and their insistence that he convert to Christianity to save himself is reprehensible, but still Shylock s actions are unforgiveable. There should be no controversy about that. Blithe Spirit The second play this summer is the British comedy Blithe Spirit, written by one of Britain s most popular twentieth-century playwrights, Sir Noel Coward. He wrote the play over the short span of seven days in May 1941, while World War II was raging in England, hoping his comedy would serve as respite from his country s suffering and anxiety. In Blithe Spirit, the novelist Charles Condomine invites an eccentric clairvoyant to his house to conduct a séance as research for his next book. After the séance, however, the ghost of Elvira, his unpleasant first wife, appears to him and begins to interfere with Charles s marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who is unable to see or hear Elvira s ghost. This is the first time the Festival has produced a Noel Coward comedy. At the time of this writing, a director for the show has not been contracted, although negotiations are underway. Henry V Shakespeare s Henry V is the third play of the season. As the title indicates, it is one of Shakespeare s works dealing with British monarchs and their lives. What the title does not reveal, however, is the dramatic power of the story -- the tension, the conflict, and the passion that pervade the life of young Prince Hal in his struggle to win his father s approval in order to succeed him as the King. It is a human story, not of wars and battles and political intrigue, but of a father who is disappointed in his immature and irresponsible son. This is an old familiar conflict between fathers and sons, between reckless youth

2 and cautious maturity in fact, between generations. Henry V contains many familiar lines, including In peace there s nothing so becomes a man as modest stillness and humility, and the famous We few. We happy few. We band of brothers as well as Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more! It is one of Shakespeare s most admired plays, and this is the second time TSF has produced it. Henry V will be directed by Stephen Wyman from Los Angeles. Mr. Wyman was an Executive Producer and Director for Days of Our Lives for more than 20 years, and recently retired. Mr. Wyman is also playing the role of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, and we are delighted to have him share his talents with us at last. Carousel The fourth play this summer is the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical Carousel, to be directed by TSF alumnus and Longview native Stephen Terrell. Although Carousel has been called the most perfect musical ever written, we have never produced it as part of the Festival. Why? For two reasons: (1) until recently we thought the scenery requirements would be too demanding, and (2) we had some misgivings about the rather dark atmosphere of part of the story. Nevertheless, because the songs are so iconic and so beautiful ( If I Loved You and You ll Never Walk Alone ), and because Stephen Terrell, who is a former student and a member of the first TSF company in 1986, agreed to return to direct the show, we are now exuberant over the decision to produce Carousel this summer. Rodgers and Hammerstein were geniuses, of course, who created some of the world s most cherished songs. One might say they wrote the score to twentieth-century America, or that together they are, for musical theatre, what Shakespeare is to dramatic literature. Carousel showcases their giant talents at the peak of their illustrious careers. The Children s Play A children s play has not been selected yet, but we are in the process of reading scripts and researching publishing houses to find a show that will appeal to our somewhat unique children s audience. Since we perform during the summer when children are not in school, a large portion of our annual audiences is pre-school age, often brought to the theatre as part of a kindergarten group or from a day care center. That limits some of our choices. Then the fact that our children s plays must be performed by the TSF Acting Intern Company, which consists of only 5 males and 2 females, places further restrictions on the scripts that we can produce. In addition, we have only two weeks to rehearse the show, build the set, make the costumes, find the props, and design the lights and sound. All in all, producing the children s play is a challenge and a test, but it is one of the most rewarding activities we do all year. The Belle of Amherst In the UpStairs Theatre space, we plan to reprise our production of The Belle of Amherst in response to popular requests. If you didn t see it last year or in 2014, you will enjoy watching our Vocal Director, actress Jennifer Burke, transform herself into the intriguing character of America s most famous and beloved female poet Emily Dickinson. The play is a moving and inspirational one-character show that illuminates the life and loves of the reclusive and eccentric lady from New England who wrote more than a thousand poems during her lifetime but died virtually unknown. After one of the performances, we will once again offer Lunch with Miss Emily, giving that audience an opportunity to participate in an extended conversation with Jennifer Burke and the director. TSF Goes on the Road! In 2013, Festival staff developed a plan to bring back the popular educational touring program, the Texas Shakespeare Festival Roadshow, which brings abridged productions of Shakespeare into schools throughout East Texas. In February of 2016, this plan will be realized when a group of six actors making up the Roadshow company will set out for their first of numerous bookings taking them as far as San Antonio. In the years leading up to the return of the Roadshow, TSF paved the way by activating a number of other educational offerings. These programs the High School Acting Workshop, Bard & Breakfast Educator Workshop, and In-School Residency and Master Class programs connected the Festival with schools throughout the state and resulted in the majority of the Roadshow s bookings for this first year. A $50,000 grant from the Rosa May Griffin Foundation helped support the development of these programs. Touring programs of Shakespeare s plays are a part of many classical theatres throughout the country, but the Roadshow will be the only one of its kind in the state of Texas. The 2016 Roadshow will consist of two performance options: a one hour cutting of A Midsummer Night s Dream and an original production called Shakespeare s Greatest Hits that introduces students to Shakespeare by compiling some of the most famous scenes from his plays. The productions offered will change from season to season, with a third production to be added to the repertoire in two to three years tour dates are between Feb 8th and March 6th. Along with each performance, schools receive an in-depth study guide and four-week lesson plan that can be implemented leading up to the performance date. The lesson plan is filled with exercises that get students thinking about Shakespeare in fun and exciting ways. This allows schools to create a whole unit on Shakespeare that culminates with a live performance brought right to the students. The goal is to leave students with a first impression of Shakespeare that s thrilling and engaging. Want to bring a performance of the Roadshow to your community? 3 Before the Curtain Rises Escape into the world of theatre for a six-week class taking you behind the scenes of the Texas Shakespeare Festival s 2016 season. This course will introduce the craft of theatre to patrons who are curious about the inner workings of the art form, and allow you to have an even more deeply enriching experience as you take in the summer productions. Dates: March 29th-May 3rd Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. Location: TSF Festival Center Cost: $100 Instructors: Meaghan & Matthew Simpson Registration / Information: Call (903) The UpStairs Theatre Space Evolves The Frank Brown Family made a generous donation last summer that allowed us to buy and install some new lighting equipment for the rehearsal hall which we are converting into a small black box performing space. If you saw The Belle of Amherst last year, you noticed the improvements that the new lighting made possible. For now, we are calling the space The UpStairs Theatre, and we plan to continue offering a small production there every year something with a small cast and limited technical demands. The Brown Family has once again offered to make a contribution for adding more lighting instruments and pipe battens, allowing the space to be lit from three sides rather than only one, so this summer the UpStairs production will look remarkably different, more professional, and more beautiful. We are so grateful to Mrs. Brown and her son Brent. Last summer the Kilgore College Library donated 75 wooden chairs to the Festival as they began their renovation, and we used those chairs as seating in the UpStairs Theatre. We were grateful to have them since they are all identical and uniform, making the seating area attractive. But, as many people commented, the chairs were also hard and uncomfortable, so we have been researching sources for new, more comfortable seating. The most affordable option we have found offers new, sturdy, stackable seats for as little as $59 each and seats with padded arms, backs, and seats padded seats for as little as $89 each. Since the UpStairs Theatre will seat a maximum of 78, the total cost of the chairs would be somewhere between $4,600 and $6,942. To simply add a detachable seat cushion to each chair will cost approximately $10 per chair, or a total of $780, but that doesn t address the complaints about the hard, upright, seatbacks, which are covered with blue fabric. So, if we were to add another wish to our long list, new seats for the UpStairs Theatre would follow closely behind the scene shop and the climate-controlled storage space. Out of the Darkness The new maintenance and custodial company employed by Kilgore College has already made a visible difference in our Festival Center--literally. In the past three weeks, workmen have gone through our building to replace, retrofit, and upgrade every lighting fixture, and the result is a remarkable improvement in visibility. We were not fully aware that we had been working in such poor light all these years until we saw the difference. In addition, they have replaced every towel and tissue dispenser and provided us with regular custodial service twice each week, which means we no longer have to clean the bathrooms and mop the floors ourselves. They are also getting bids for repairing a major plumbing leak and relocating our washer and dryer so that they have proper drainage and ventilation. Every week we are reminded of how much we have to be thankful for. Festival Tickets Make Good Gifts TSF 2016 This Christmas, give something that will be appreciated even more next summer! TSF Gift Certificates can be purchased in any amount starting at $10 and can be used for tickets, Stratford Room merchandise, concessions, backstage tours -- anything other than raffle tickets or auction items. They can be personalized with your name as well as that of the recipient, and they can contain any message you choose -- Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Thinking of You, or anything else you want to include. If we receive your order by December 3, we can mail them to you before our offices close for the holidays. As a guideline, single tickets to Festival Shows cost $30; The Belle of Amherst tickets are $20; a Season Ticket (one ticket to each of the four main stage shows) is $90; tickets to the children s play are $7 each. TSF Gift Certificates can be used to purchase almost anything, and they don t expire until July 31, Consider a Shakespearean stocking stuffer for the Festival fan on your list! TSF Partners with Longview World of Wonders to Host a Radio Play Workshop for Children Thanks in part to a grant from Humanities Texas, TSF and Longview WoW will be offering a workshop for children on the secrets behind creating A Christmas Carol Radio Play. The workshop will let students participate in creating different characters and making live sound effects that help create the world of 19th century London. Students will also learn about the life of Charles Dickens and how this famous holiday classic was created. The workshop will be held on November 21st at 10:00 AM and has limited space for participants. Cost for the workshop is $15 and will take place at Longview World of Wonders newly renovated discovery center, 112 E. Tyler St., in Longview. Workshop content is geared toward children grades 3 through 8. Thanks to support from Humanities Texas, there will be free ticket giveaways for workshop participants to attend a performance of TSF s A Christmas Carol Radio Play, which is playing at Grace Crossing Church in Longview on Dec. 4th and 5th. To reserve a spot, call Longview World of Wonders at (903)

4 Can You Sponsor an Intern? Last summer we asked patrons and Guild members if they would be willing to donate $250 to sponsor one of the interns in the company so that we could raise their meager 10-week salary from $1,250 to $1,500. Some of our interns come to us from as far away as New England or Washington State, and it isn t uncommon for them to spend a big portion of their TSF salary just to get here and back home again. Within two weeks after our request went out, generous patrons and Guild members had sponsored all 17 of last year s interns. The response was both gratifying and inspiring. This summer we will have 23 interns working here: 7 actors, 4 in audience services, 3 in props, 2 in painting, 2 in lighting, 2 in stage management, 1 in sound, 1 in scenery, and 1 in costumes. Once again, we would like to offer each of them a small raise, but to do that we need a sponsor for each intern someone who will donate the $250 increase from $1,250 to $1,500. Can you do that? Each sponsor will be listed in the season program in three places. Under the biographical sketch accompanying the intern s photo, this sentence will appear: Sponsored by [Name of Sponsor]. In a special section of the program titled Intern Sponsors, each intern s name will appear alongside the name of his / her sponsor. And in the Friends of Shakespeare section, which contains the names of all donors and contributors, the intern sponsors will be included under the appropriate category. Sponsors may request a particular intern by name or by department, if they choose. Interns will be given the name and contact information for their sponsor and an opportunity to meet them, if the sponsor agrees to be acknowledged. If we do not receive a sponsor for every intern, we will offer the raises first to any intern who has worked for TSF in the past. After that, we will assign them based on their training and experience. To become an Intern Sponsor, please call Raymond Caldwell at any weekday between 9:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. or send an to RCaldwell@TexasShakespeare.com. Thank you! Book of Luke Returns for Easter Celebrate the true meaning of Easter with the Texas Shakespeare Festival! This special presentation is a two-person performance that lasts about 60 minutes. Beginning with the birth of John the Baptist and going all the way through the resurrection and ascension of Christ, the two actors portray every character in the greatest story ever told. We are taking reservations for performances of Book of Luke in March of After last year s successful church tour, we are once again looking for congregations to host this unique Easter production. For more information or to reserve a performance, call (903) A Christmas Carol Radio Play The most wonderful time of the year is almost upon us, and with it comes the return of TSF s production of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. This version presents a classic story with a twist as an on-air radio show with music, sound effects, and a foley artist to make it all happen. Our production features Micah Goodding, Rick Higginbotham, Jason Richards, Shelby Gilliam, Matthew Simpson, and Meaghan Simpson. Traveling with this show has become a new tradition, and this year we ll be bringing it to the Grace Crossing performance space in Longview, TX, located at 1001 W. Hawkins Parkway. Tickets are $20. Performance Dates: Friday, December 4th at 7:30 pm Saturday, December 5th at 7:30 pm Be sure to come early to enjoy live Christmas music sung by the Kilgore College Children s Chorus and the UT Tyler Charter Choir. For more information or to purchase tickets visit or call (903) We hope to see you at the theatre to help us celebrate this glorious story about transformation through the spirit of Christmas. Can t make the show? We ll be recording everything before our live studio audience and will create a podcast to download and listen to anywhere around the country. TSF Foundation Board Meeting The TSF Foundation Board met for its fall 2015 meeting on October 15 at the Festival Center building. The most important item on the agenda was the announcement that once again the Foundation was successful in raising enough money to help cover all of the Festival s 2015 expenses, allowing it to end the season without a deficit for the fifth consecutive year. It is only because of the hard work of the Festival Board and the generosity of hundreds of loyal donors that the Festival is in such good financial standing. Thank you! Another item on the agenda was a proposal to increase its meeting schedule from only two meetings each year (April and October) to three each year, adding a meeting at the end of each Festival season in early August and moving the October meeting into early November. The motion passed unanimously. The Board also accepted the resignation of Madelyn Kennedy from Gladewater and nominated Lois Reed to represent Gladewater on the Board, and she was unanimously approved on November 5, There was discussion concerning plans for the Stratford Room gift shop, including last year s decision to eliminate the silent auction, to increase the inventory of TSF-owned merchandise for resale, and to continue the Shakespeare s Attic items. The consensus was that we accepted too many jewelry vendors on consignment last summer and that a greater variety of consigned merchandise was needed. Sam Forester asked the Festival Staff to create a Wish List that would include both large and small items the Festival needs. (See the following article, Our Greatest Wish and Dream. ) 4

5 Our Greatest Wish and Dream We have all heard the old proverb, If wishes were horses, beggars would ride, or something similar to that adage. When an organization gets to be as diverse and complex as the Festival has become, its needs seem to multiply. If you have visited the TSF Festival Center building in the past five years, you have seen how rapidly the spaces have transformed. At first, we were gratefully amazed by the amount of space we were given, and although we are still incredibly grateful, we are now astonished by how quickly the spaced has filled up! We are already bursting at the seams and wondering how it all happened in such a short time. Our space for storage of valuable period costumes is full so full that we have had to move all contemporary or modern costumes over to the Fine Arts Building, back into their original home above the stage, to make room for the beautiful costumes to be built this summer. More crowded is our limited space for storing antique and period furniture and props. Presently, we are using the small southeast corner of the old Safeway building which adjoins the Festival Center, but the Safeway building has not been approved for our use. So we are actually illegal squatters. The college allows us to use one-third of the old Brookshire s building for scenery storage, but that, too, is full. We have no adequate climate-controlled storage room for hard-to-replace period furniture and props, and the Safeway space continues to deteriorate. Our need for costumes and furniture storage is great, but our greatest need is for an indoor scene shop. Our carpenters and painters are forced to do all their work outdoors because the scene shop behind the stage is far too small to accommodate the amount of scenery we must construct for five plays performing in rotating repertory. The East Texas summer heat is challenging, of course, but when it rains, as it often does in May and June, our construction work must come to a stop. Last year we bought a large white tent and set it up outside the theatre on the patio, but it is not large enough to cover everything, and it does not offer any protection from water that runs underfoot inside. When the carpenters cannot build, the painters cannot paint, and our tight construction schedule becomes a cause for real concern and stress. For a couple of years now, we have been talking about what we think is the ideal solution to this dilemma. The aforementioned Safeway building is attached to the north wall of our building, since the entire complex was once the Region 7 Education Service Center. When the college offered TSF the two-story portion five years ago, that offer did not include the part that was the old Safeway store because that part of the complex was in greater need of repairs. As a result, it has been totally abandoned for more than 12 years, and although it has electricity, it needs some new plumbing, a new roof, and much cosmetic attention. The inside needs to be completely gutted all the interior walls and the dropped ceiling removed in order to provide a large, open space suited to building and painting flats, platforms, and other scenic elements for our plays. We have had three estimates given to us one by a contractor, one by a construction engineer, and one by someone experienced in the renovation of other historic buildings but none of them official and on the record. The least expensive option, for adding the new roof and doing the minimum amount of work inside to make the space useable, was in the neighborhood of $250,000. The most expensive and comprehensive estimate, which included substantial renovation of the interior, was a bit over $700,000. But when anyone asks us What is your greatest need? my answer is An indoor scene shop! So this is now our number one wish and dream as well. On November 5, Sam Forester and Raymond Caldwell met with KC President Bill Holda to ask the college to grant TSF permission to use the Safeway building and to allow the TSF Foundation to begin seeking official quotes and bids for either the renovation of the existing space or its demolition and construction of a new building to serve as the Festival scene shop, painting studio, and furniture and props storage facility. The good news is that Dr. Holda granted the request! So now the Foundation can begin laying the groundwork for making the Festival s Greatest Wish come true! This is the most exciting development since we were given the Festival Center Building six years ago. Thanks to our TSF Truly Significant Friends IF YOU Joined the Guild (again or for the first time); bought tickets for one or more shows; shopped in the Stratford Room; donated to the TSF Foundation; helped provide meals for the Company; hosted a Monday Event; Adopted an Artist; sponsored an intern; donated items for Poor Yorick s Closet; attended and / or brought food for the Strike Day Dinner; bought a raffle ticket; or anything else that helped the Festival happen so successfully this year, THANK YOU! Let s make it happen again next year! The travel-size items for the backpacks and the Closet were a hit. As you travel between now and May 2016, please pick up those extra items and donate them to TSF. When they start to get in your way, call Gem Meacham ( ) for pickup, or bring them by the Festival Center in Kilgore.
